Sony selling Special Editions ONLY in preorder is disappointing.

I have been hunting for the PS5 30th Anniversary Edition and it’s been impossible. The issue is not that the pre order runs out of stock, the problem is that when the release date comes, the product is 100% discontinued, at release day!

I get that the PS5 Pro bundle is limited (although extremely limited, they could’ve made at least 50,000), because it’s a bundle with a lot of products included, but why does Sony have to make the 30th Anniversary PS5 Slim also so limited (or any other) that it can’t even reach its own release date?

The same thing happened with the Spider-Man edition (console, Dualsense and covers) and also the Astro Bot controller.

Nintendo releases many special editions, but while they are not extremely easy to find, you can get them even several months after release. Even the Mario 3D Collection was easier to find and it was also limited.

Why not make these special editions like the ones that include GOW Ragnarok and Horizon Forbidden West, which are in production for several months, so it allows people to at least buy them outside of preorders?

You can argue that the demand is immense for the 30th Anniversary Edition, and if true, why not “replace” the normal one in production and just make this one for a while then? After all is a celebration YEAR not celebration MILLISECOND.

Agreed. Used to think it was cool but more I've been through and think about it, Nintendo's print for a year-ish approach is better for everyone.

Limited gaming stuff is stupid anyways. The only people loving it are scaplers.

No idea why Sony does it.
are you serious? actual people got them (not scalpers) and limited stuff has been in every industry at some point.

Why does Sony do it? it builds the brand, like a limited edition shoe that shoe lovers can flaunt.

I still can't tell if you're serious.

Walmart+ has come through for me over and over. I can usually get whatever preorder on there, that's behind that paywall, the moment it goes live.

Troll post?

123000 were made of the pro. Sure there should be more maybe 123000 per region.

I'm not too sad about missing one, but hell when the ps6 came out I'd be able to sell the ps5 pro limited for a tidy profit

It's pretty much the same thing that makes their exclusive games so amazing to their fanbase, just turning to the enemy within. You not being able to have it is going to make someone else enjoy it a whole lot more, and they appreciate your suffering.

It's really stupid. It's just a color. As it is, scalpers will be making a huge chunk of the profit instead of Sony.
It served its purpose. It generated quite a bit of publicity and hype for the Pro.

Just look how quickly the sentiment turned in the PS5 Pro thread. It went from “man fuck Sony, this is a return to the arrogant PS3 days” to “OMFG a GRAY PS5 PRO?!?! Please Lord Jesus, I’ll stop masturbating if you let me get one before the scalpers take them all” almost instantly.

that was kind of funny.

They need to change their mentality. Open up a very limited period, you have 24 hours to decide if you want that special edition, but everyone that wants one gets one. Limited TIME, not QUANTITY.

Dead serious. Sale was a shitshow on the Sony website with lots of disappointed people. 10/10 sale on Amazon and others also was a big shitshow with lots of disappointed people for the limited Slim.

Yes, actual customers also got it, but actual customers can also become scalpers if the profit is too high and profit is very high. And how many of the actual customers will actually play on it instad of using it as an investment?

Don't make it limited = more sales for Sony and more happy customers for the price of some less FOMO hype.

Seems dumb to me. Seems like they could get more people to buy their hardware if they made more of them available. I have not been tempted to upgrade to the Pro, but if I knew I could get one of the gray ones, that's potentially interesting enough to push me over the edge. When I read it was an artificially rare product, I checked out.

If all someone wants is a PlayStation they can play on then just buy a regular PlayStation. The concept of "limited editions" is not new. Book publishers have been created signed/numbered versions for decades. It is meant to create something unique. If everyone under the Sun can get it then it isn't unique at all.

Intentionally rare product.

You can always make limited time/special editions. They also will become rare, but at least everybody had a chance to get one. And if it has to be some limited crap, at least offer it to loyal customers with many trophies or something instead of that stupid frustrating queue system.

And the vast majority of people would still have not been able to get one and folks would still be complaining. Solves nothing.

I said it before and I will say it again. By not having the 30th edition widely available for the next six months is simply Sony leaving money on the table. I’m spending $700 for the pro, but if I could get the 30th Pro I would have no qualms spending the $1000.

Sonys dumb af right now. Lead in the water or something.

Still stupid, but at least more fair and only actual customers could buy and not scaplers with 10 fresh accounts. I would prefer the limited time method though. or at least don't make it fucking 12.000 units if the 50.000 of the 500 million PS4 Pro already was instantly sold out and scalped. Sell reasonable numbers.

And then suddenly the vast majority of "actual customers" are selling those limited editions on ebay for thousands, becoming scalpers themselves. I just don't get the point of complaining about this after the fact when everyone knew going in that getting one was going to be highly unlikely. If people are against the entire concept of limited editions then they shouldn't care either way as this was never for them. Otherwise, they set themselves up for disappointment, probably because they wanted to make a bunch of money selling the thing on ebay. lol

It was brilliant by Sony. The reaction to the Pro reveal was bad. They followed it with a nostalgia bomb with those 30th Anniversary consoles. Excitement for those completely drowned out the negative narrative for the Pro.

Sony didn't make tons of money on those LE pros since they came with an Edge and charging stand

You can buy the colored plates on Amazon if thats all you wanted

You can't have a "limited edition" console on sale for 6 months, its no longer limited

Not very confusing.

They shouldn't have left 12k to be bought up by scalpers, but instead put a little effort into distribution and made it a community event and vetted sales to tenured & active members first.
I laugh at the idea that a billion dollar company would make decisions that are bad for business because they just "like the attention".

Unfortunately, a lot of posts around here that you’d think were straight up out of an Eddie Murphy comedy are serious. Limited Editions are nothing new and this exact same thing has happened with plenty of other companies. As noted, it is L I M I T E D for a reason.

That said, I was hugely disappointed I missed the Pro considering I got the 20th Anniv. PS4!

Then don’t bundle the edge with it. Just a non-numbered anniversary gray Pro for $699. They could still have their 12300 limited limited editions. It’s still leaving money on the table no matter which way you look at it.
