Soul Sacrifice Review Thread

Let's button mash in a game where you have limited spell uses!

Haha, it's really sad what this has come to...

I guess that I'm more entitled to write a review just based on the DEMO ALONE since I put more time into it than some (most? probably) into the review copy.

This is actually one thing that stood out to me in the demo;

In a strange and out of place “mini game”, (and I use the term rather loosely here) Librom will develop droplets of Lacrima on the outside of his binding every so often. The player can gather this when he exits back to his cell, where Librom will remind you to check for droplets. It’s an arbitrary step that is unnecessary.

It seems like a step they put in just to make use of the touchscreen because someone had a bright idea that you could 'wipe' drops off of the cover of the book. It's an odd little thing, really.

Not going to put too much faith in any of these reviews, I trust a lot more in people like Ryouga Saotome and the Red Sun Gamer guys who gave it really positive thoughts and spent a lot of time with the game. I'm still really looking forward to it, although my biggest concern right now is how underlevelled I will feel when the game comes out compared to the people that put a lot of time into the demo.

You can just press X instead if you don't want to use the touchscreen.

the only Touch screen required stuff is when you die during a battle then you can help your allies by touching them to make their Attack go up, or touching the monsters to make their defence go down.

Yep I trust RSG's gaming opinions the most.

As mentioned you don't have to touch the screen to wipe tears. The X button will do. However I feel that the most unnecessary touch feature is also the best implemented one - Cockroach squishing and book spinning FTW!

I spent half the time with the demo on those cockroaches. Been a bit busy and only played a few hours though hah, unlike some of you.

Will MP on the demo be up for a while? Looking to get some indies this week, might grab SS later on if the demo is so good.

Middle of the road reviews? Soul Sacrifice is shamelessly copying all of Monster Hunter's key points!

Attacking big monsters in groups? If it deserves middle of the road reviews for doing that then MH deserves it for shamelessly copying Phantasy Star.

Remind me of how Monster Hunter was received in the west in the beginning.

It just means the games have room for improvement. If the team listens to reviews they can make a better sequel. Not every game is perfect in its first entry. So these review scores seem fine.

My problem with it was that he prompted you every time so it felt like a chore. I'd have preferred it if it was one of those things I occasionally remembered or checked out when I was low on Lacrima. I don't know if the prompting is different in the full game though.

I heard in the JP release you don't even need to go to the book to do this.

Huh? But thats what happens isnt it? He will only prompt you if you exit out of the book. If you stay in the book, you can avoid him for a few runs before gathering Lacrima which gathers up in the meantime.

And that too.

meh opinions....

All I got from these reviews were A) Play what you like. I've logged more than with the demo, than I did with the last two Uncharted games combined, and those were $65 games...B) Most reviewers didn't play past the demo area, or didn't finish the game to it's entirety. C) Gaming journalist are narrow minded, comparing Soul Sacrifice to Monster Hunter, is akin to comparing Call of Duty to Bioshock: Infinite.

In the end, people were going to get the game based on the demo, are still getting it. The reviews, unfortunately, may deter those who purchase games solely based on reviews.

In my opinion. SS is a game with very few flaws. The voicing acting maybe? But, even that's decent, especially for a handheld game, there is also a JP option.

Just completed reading the IGN review. Am I missing something, or did they not mention anything about the game's soundtrack?
Was a bit bummed about that. The music in this game definitely stands out as one of the +'s for me.

I hope some of them end up reviewing their scores... bleh. seems like they did not give the game a fair chance.

Sorry, I don't mean he prompted me after every run, I just mean that if tears needed gathering he explicitly mentioned it every time. It did only happen when I backed out of the book, but it would've been nice to back out and notice the tears myself rather than having my attention purposefully drawn to it. As I say though, I'm only basing this on the demo.

I have to wonder for all the shit these sub par professional reviews get and the corruption with games journalism why does some of GAF put so much emphasis on these reviews? I'm not complaining about the thread, just wondering if review threads keep getting done out of tradition.

There's a demo to try out for anyone with a Vita and there are people here who post impressions that have no affiliation with sponsers and the ilk.

It's a tradition thing I'm sure and it's nice to have a giant group of opinions in one place, though I honestly feel like the OT is better as it has players who play the game seriously

Seems disappointing that a lot of the reviewers didn't seem to have played the online, considering how that's been the biggest focus of the game since its reveal - I don't put much weight into these scores.

Considering how the Vita is the media's favorite whipping boy, these scores are better than I thought. My copy is already paid for, just wish Amazon would just ship it.

Soul Sacrifice takes time to dedicate yourself to. More time than any mainstream reviewer would care to dedicate to a game on a struggling platform. It also seems that boss rushing didn't click with these guys, which is too bad.

Oh well. Soul Sacrifice is the best co op I've played since...

... Splosion Man, maybe? That game was a riot.

Yeah, I was expecting those scores. It's a Vita "Monster Hunter Clone" with weird graphics and a lot of grinding. Probably will end at ~ 70 on Metacritics.

But that button mashing on Polygon review is awesome.

People going crazy with the demo putting hours and hours on it and some reviewers give it only 6! Lol
I guess this is the curse of being a vita game.

It's the curse of being a "hunting action" game. Monster Hunter received mediocre reviews until the series exploded in popularity in Japan, and then scores magically improved.

Monster Hunter: 68/100
Monster Hunter Freedom: 71/100
Monster Hunter Freedom 2: 72/100
Monster Hunter Freedom Unite: 81/100
Monster Hunter Tri: 84/100
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate: 82/100 & 79/100

As a guy who is on the fence about getting a Vita for Soul Sacrifice and has no experience with the demo or anything, I'd like to know what exactly is wrong with what was written in the reviews and if someone could clear up any factual errors and misconceptions they may have made. I have no idea what anyone is saying on both sides and have no point of reference.

If you own a Vita already and are on the fence, play the demo first instead of just reading reviews. Note that the demo's online servers will shut down sometime after the release of the full game.

I tried monster hunter freedom unite and imo it does not deserve a 81, soul sacrifice, even if it's not a game for me(infact i won't buy it), deserves a 8.5-9 at least imo.

Based solely on the demo, those scores seem pretty fair to me.

The game didn't jump out to me as a must buy for Vita, which is a shame. As there's nothing out now until Killzone in September :/

Seems like most people have invested a lot of time into the demo and think it's better than the scores indicate. Also seems like some of the reviews don't take into account online play in their scores or didn't have access to it before they published their reviews
