South of Midnight (Compulsion Games/XGS) - Previews Roundup

SX version seems to be in a pretty good state and SS is also mostly 60, should hopefully be ironed to a solid 60 by release.

I thought I remember some of the previews saying performance needs some optimizing even on the Series X.
I wish DF had a hands on preview to give us the stats

I bet this will have stellar reviews from the jounors but will end up being like a OK 6/10.

Really looking forward to this one. The world and story have had me invested since the game was first revealed, and it visually looks gorgeous to boot.

Had a pretty great time for a game I wasn't at all really interested in. The enemy designs and world design and attention to detail with some of the myths and history is awesome.
Very Kena in some ways
Does it have the insane difficulty jumps at bosses like Kena did?

I had a blast with that game
The "dungeons" challenges were honestly some of the best platforming I ever played. Super interesting and really fun gameplay.
Not everything was perfect, the game felt quite unpolished / unfinished on some aspects (like you could easily get out of bounds and get stuck lol), but the gameplay was really, really good.

Sounds like the game is receiving a positive early reception! I’m totaling digging the setting and vibe of this game. Definitely something different than what we usually get. I know it’s not going to be everyone’s cup of tea, but you have to respect that this developer is doing something different, setting-wise. The gameplay doesn’t seem drastically different (which isn’t bad per se), but the world seems like it’ll definitely hook me in. I’m very much looking forward to this game!

Sounds okay. I watched Skill Up's preview. He seems to be saying that the atmosphere and art style stand out, but gameplay is secondary. He commented that the combat can be tough, with big, sudden difficulty spikes. That's a little weird in a game like this, one that seems geared to be more of a visual/artsy experience, rather than a challenge. Kena was a little like that, too - weird difficulty spikes in an otherwise cutesy, easy-going game.

Based on what I'm hearing so far, I'd consider picking it up for $20 or so. I like the setting, although that is definitely the southern Louisiana of imagination, not the reality. I'm still suspicious because of SBI and the obnoxious CM, but I need to see whether that affected the story, characters, or dialog. No clear sign of that yet, but you can't tell from previews, which are almost always positive. I'll wait for reviews and impressions.

Well, I have nothing to lose as it comes to Gamepass. Wouldn't ever touch this game otherwise when I saw skill up say the gameplay leaves to be desired as it's not the focus of the experience.

What was the PlayStation game with the overly talking girl this looks like the Xbox version of that game.

I'll give it a shot...doesn't look like something I would pay for in full or want to own outright. Hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Actually looks pretty good now, they've improved performance considerably since the first gameplay footage was shown (still work to do though). Art design is also terrific, looking forward to it.

I don’t know how you can even do previews without a dedicated list of reasonable previewers.

The only alternative to ‘access media’ is doing a public beta. Which doesn’t really happen often for single player games.
