Steam Deck doesn’t have sleep download. If not - maybe it’s cloud sync or upload?

Shader cache updates for Proton which is redistributed by users playing the game. It can improve game performance and stability in the long run.

Many shaders are cached asynchronous, so they get stored the moment they appear (=while playing normally; under gameplay). Usually the Deck should handle it very well. There can be some oddities though, like some UE5 games on Windows where shader caching causes stutter or other issues.

Some game pre-compile them upon launching so it doesn't have to compute them on the fly, giving you more performance under gameplay scenarios.

The updates make sure you have always the latest shaders available.

Thank you! Explains why I see "shader cache" mentioned when it's doing those dozens of quick downloads hah. Maybe that'll be something Valve hides in the future, or gives the option to hide, rather, as I'd opt to not see them and instead just see the normal updates for games the devs push.

As far as I understand, the Deck downloads shaders for the particular game, so that your Deck saves the computing power to create them by itself. It's kind of a huge cloud project. Someone plays a game first, the Deck creates all the shaders by itself and this can lead to judder or to worse performance. However, this Deck uploads the created shaders and makes them available to users who want to play the game afterwards, so that computing power of many is saved. The downloaded shaders will then be added to your Deck. I think it should mean that when a game is "completely" played by others and all shaders of the game are created and provided to and distributed by Valve, there should be no more such updates.

    • Steam Deck now keeps track of refresh rate and FPS limit settings independently for internal and external displays
    • Disabled refresh rate switching via the quick access menu for external displays by default. Alternative refresh rates are still accessible via the resolution dropdown in Settings->Display.
    • Added a toggle to developer settings to re-enable refresh rate switching in the quick access menu for external displays. (Please note that the Steam Deck’s built-in display was validated to support the full range of refresh rates available in the slider, but for arbitrary external displays we can't provide a guarantee that the resolution + refresh rate combination will be functional. This can lead to a scenario where the external display doesn’t display an image, so there isn’t an easy way to undo the change. Here be dragons, we don't recommend turning this setting on.)

    • Controller configurations now automatically switch to be per-device when multiple of the same controller are connected at once
    • Virtual menu previews in the Configurator now highlight the appropriate button when navigating to its associated command in the command list

    • Any remaining Snap Angle is doled as the stick returns to zero. This further reduces "mouse movement spikes"
    • Tweaked Inner Radius Default to be lower

Had some fun with FTL. Great game for the Deck as long as you don't mind having small text and some small elements, like the doors and tripulants of the space ship.

That said, game has the option to pause it and still be able to open/close doors and give orders to your tripulants, so it's perfectly playable.:messenger_ok:

Finally received mine today, it will take some time getting used to it and configuring it but so far I like it. I’m not sold on some aspects of the ergonomics like the back triggers or the sticks which I find more « slippery » than the XSX controller’s. But I’ll get used to it.

The most surprising thing is the trackpad part, works really well for KB/M and it feels more accurate than the trackpad which used to be on the Steam controller.

Can I buy any kind of usb C to HDMI for TV output or does it require certain specs?

Valve hasn't released any requirements to my knowledge. I think most work fine, but do a cursory search whenever you find the the one you want to buy to see if there is any community feedback. The official discussion forum and places like the SD subreddit are good resources.

I've gone through quite a ride with getting a steam deck and not getting a steam deck. I've gone the full wait time since launch and then cancelled. Then preordered in May, and cancelled again in september.

Last night I decided to preorder again. And just now got an email saying it was available to purchase. Did they really increase production that much that it's less than 24 hour wait time to get a deck now? That's insane.

The reservation emails go out on Monday and Thursday, so at most it’s a 3 day wait now.

When I check the cheapest model is NOT available to buy, only reservation login. The other two models are available.

For me, games like this are my go-to Deck games. Something a decade or so old, low requirements - these types of games typically run fantastically on the Deck and still give you a solid battery life.

Even something like Binary Domain (currently only $3) is a treat to play for these reasons.

Using Chiaki since the first week the Deck released, so yes ;) It's really fun and works good with slow paced games, I would not recommend playing shooters with it, but I payed through the Mafia Remake, Carrion, The Last Campfire and some LA Noire without a problem.

Yea. I've been attempting to playing Ultima 9 through GOG on steamdeck. It's nearly working, though still some issues with it mapping all the keyboard controls in a workable way. Game has a shit ton of hotkeys and quirks involving mouse controls.

I have a weird problem that started few days ago. When I go into desktop mode, I cannot right click on the desktop with the left trackpad to make the context menu appear. I mean I click, but nothing happens. And when I go into Dolphin file manager and right click on a file (for example to rename it), if the file is on left side of the screen, nothing happens, but if the file is on right side, it opens (instead of showing context menu). WTF

Weidly, inside apps (VLC, Firefox, even "start menu"), rightclicking via the left trackpad works correctly.

I was on stable when it started doing this, switched to preview, but no change.

Really bizzare behaviour and it annoys me. In gaming mode no problem though.

Anyone encounter this?

Getting it to run was quite easy. Install, modify DosBox config so cpu is set to auto (otherwise the game runs very bad) and modify the controls a bit.

It's great, but there's a problem, at least with my current config.

The game runs at 60fps, but in order to do so it seems that DOSbox puts the Deck at 100% workload, so the battery consumes like 16watts and the CPU goes up to 80°C, which is a lot for this kind of game.

I've been trying to fiddle with the DOSbox config, mainly the cpu cycles, but that didn't report any benefits. I'm no expert on DOSbox so maybe there's something that can be done, but I dunno.

My second option was to install Power Tools, to limit number of active threads and CPU speed on the Deck. This worked to some extent, game could maintain 60fps at times while consuming 8 or 9 watts, but also drop to like 30fps when turning the camera.

I'll keep trying to make it work, as the time I spent actully playing it was quite fun and comfy to play on the Deck.
