Valve confirm Steam Deck wont have yearly releases, Deck 2 will arrive when a generational performance improvement does

The only thing I don‘t like about my SD OLED is its size and weight. Always getting numb hands after playing it for a while on the couch or in the bed. Performance is absolutely sufficient for my needs, which is 80% retro stuff and 20% streaming, don‘t really need a device that can play AAA games in full HD with 60fps.

Nah ur clearly not flowing the tech scene, 4nm and 3nm chips are available, but simply cost way too much right now.
We could see a 4nm chip next year, at a reasonable price, but I don’t know if valve will use it. Would still cost $100 more than the current 6nm. What we need are more players like Microsoft to jump in to provide some competition.
Let me get this straight. I'm easily confused since I clearly don't flow the tech scene. We could see a 4nm chip next year (2025) at a reasonable price, but you don't know if Valve would use that. So you're suggesting they might wait until... What.. 2026 or 2027?

As expected. Please only release models with OLED displays moving forward though, the technology is just so much better than LCD.
Can you imagine the smack in the face it would be if they made a LCD SD2? Either you eat shit and buy the lesser model or eat more shit and wait for the inevitable OLED version. I dont know if they could get away with that tbh.

I hear this complaint every so often and I can't imagine what the person looks like. How can you let a tiny weightless object outperform you?

Probably not just about waiting for a generation leap but also when the cost of it is within a certain range which can be even longer wait..

I’m dying to see how the z2 extreme chips perform.

On the other hand, I don’t really care to play graphically intensive games on a handheld. Steam Deck as it exists right now is amazing and I use it every day.
I'm using it while watching football, and Dodgers/Mets in 12 minutes. I'm entertainment multi-tasking.

I prefer the generational releases over annual. Makes it easier to buy a product without obsessing over next year's model. Same thing with eReaders.

Since it's a PC and not a console, you're not bound to Valve if you want more power or more frequent hardware.

Buy PC handhelds to your hearts content, I am 100% sure there will be a newer, faster handheld by someone every single year gaming is still around on PCs.

I agree. Some kind of A.I. upscaling will do wonders on a handheld.
I'm not sure if it would, using DLSS upsampling from 720p isn't great whereas upsampling from 1440p to 4K is excellent. However nobody tests it but testing upsampling of e.g. 520p to 800p would be an interesting test for dlss.

On steam deck not upgrading soon, I'm 100% behind that decision. Other vendors are releasing yearly e.g. ROG Ally but the improvements are minor.

Better for Steam to focus on the deck and in another few years upgrade the hardware, when there are more improvements in terms of cpu/gpu, mem throughput etc.

2 to 2.5 years should be the right upgrade path for the deck.

Something I wonder about is how they are going to incorporate the new model with the store's "Deck Verified" category. They spent all this time labelling thousands of games as verified, how will that affect the new advanced specs. Make a whole new SD2 category and clutter up the UI? Otherwise it would be obsolete for the original SD.

Cool, my Steam Deck handles everything I need or want it to play just fine, and haven’t once asked for more power out it whilst playing something. If I do want more, then I put it down, and turn on my PC. I have the base level, 64gb, regular screen model, and the only things I’d wish were improved were battery life for more intensive games, and a second USB-C port. Otherwise? I absolutely love the thing.

Valve not making a move with the Deck for a while doesn’t bother me one bit.

Most of what I want from Valve is software not HW related yet.

Improvements to Proton, downloadable and shareable (and rateable) performance and control community presets (input mapping + graphics settings) for games you can manage and browse in the Steam Game Mode UI (developers could take advantage of this to kind of crowdsource some of the Steam Deck verification work or to distribute improvements targeted for it), maybe even community made Game Mode Mods support for games (think about a community reviewed NexusMods selection with some scripts people could build thanks to hooks Valve provides in this new layer), etc…

There is soooooooo much good work they can do there as they work with their partners to define the ideal Steam Deck 2 iteration. Let it cook properly and make it even easier for devs to make Steam Deck 2 verified titles (choose the HW well so that it will allow games to scale to it even better… I think they will wait for much more efficient and performant on device AI acceleration and RT acceleration, something a bit beyond what PS5 provides in terms of HW RT capabilities, not peak performance as it does not target 4K@60 Hz+ either) and maybe a power optimised version of XDNA2 Strix Halo will provide.

The thing can barely run newer games in an acceptable manner, buying one in 2024 when Ally X exists seems redundant.
That personally doesn’t matter to me; there will always be something faster and more performant. The Steam Deck is still very much a beast for chewing through 7th and 8th gen games, and will even run certain current gen games with some settings adjustment. Plus, it’s still the easiest handheld PC to pick up and play with little tweaking from the end user, but has all of the tools available if one wishes to go deeper.

Stuff like the ROG Ally and Legion Go are both more powerful, and are awesome handhelds, but the Steam Deck absolutely still has a ton of value and life left in it.

My money would be on next year. 26 the latest. It's in development now guaranteed, they just don't want to take sales away from current ones. I for one will get get one. Use it more and more these days and would love a bigger screen

I don't know if you guys understand the seriousness of Valve hear. They aren't treating the Steam Deck like a PC GPU. They are treating it like a console. I think the earliest the SteamDeck 2 comes out is 2027. So every 5 or 6 years.

They've said this before and I've disagreed with it in the past.. old news lol

That being said it wouldn't hurt to give us a steam deck lite that shrinks the thing down a bit while keeping screen size right?

Considering only the games that work. The rest can work with much more games because Windows.

I don't believe that at all. They know there is demand for it. It's in development and timelines allowing I think it will be sooner than that. I guess time will tell.

They can’t deliver the performance jump at the price they want. So I doubt they are putting out steam deck 2 soon. Or else we would have already put out a $999 steam deck.

I mean, before the original Steam Deck was put on sale, I saw a video interview with them saying it wouldn't be a yearly release etc because the hardware isn't there to justify it. Why is this being reported as news again now? (Not attacking OP, I mean media outlets)

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch
Well, its a new assurance that they are sticking to what they said. Its normal and not wrong for companies and people to change their mind or decisions over time

I believe Valve is waiting for an APU with RDNA 4 or 5.

RDNA 4 will bring improvements to Ray tracing and will use AI upscaling.
RDNA 5 will unify the architecture with CDNA.

The nextgen consoles will probably use RDNA 5, so I think it's safer to bet on a Steam Deck 2 with this architecture, as it would have greater future compatibility.
