What games? I haven't really found any game that has run poorly on it.. I'm still to this day blown away with how good games look on this thing.. sitting in my son's karate plan resident evil 4 remake last night.. absolute perfection

Which runs like ass on even the most high end PC, a broken port is not a steam deck + modern games issue.

Thats cause it is, it was originally developed for PS2 and then moved up to the Xbox 360/PS3 late in development, its also why they are shorter

So tried out a few games
Return of the Obra Dinn - Interesting game and verified for Deck but had a weird bug where when starting the game if you touched the screen on the Main menu, you could no longer use the buttons, plays well enough and really needed to spend a bit longer with it
Star Wars Republic Commando - A bit disappointing in terms of controls and playability, its overly sensitive even on the lowest settings, it runs well enough but some controls are missing like Crouch so you need to go and manually set it up, I was out out the house with no internet so they're may be an better layout
Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order - I've been replaying this and tbh 45fps keeps being unstable but 30fps is fine so I may carry on with that, its only a quick refresh playthrough anyway so its not a major deal

Deck bros , I just ran into a weird game busting glitch on RE4 remake. It was running great for the past 4 weeks more or less. Last night I get the annoying performance overlay bug pop onto my screen (WHICH THEY STILL HAVE NOT FUCKING FIXED!!)
So this morning I set the overlay to 5 and did a system reset and got rid of that bug , try to launch Re4 and have gotten 4 game crashes in a row before its even started at all. It was running at default settings with proton experimental. Some weird error message about Wine 8.0 .
Anybody have any advice or run into the same issue ? I love my Deck but the overlay glitch that keeps happening and games that run fine and all of a sudden won't launch after an update. I am starting to get frustrated with this thing.

My only issue with these games as its often easier to just stream them via xCloud / Game Pass so I end up not grabbing them on Steam aside from Halo

Amid Evil is on sale this week for $4.99. I got that and played it nonstop. Great game. Reminds me of the melee weapon from Quake. Dusk is good too.

This is one of the best FPS games I have ever played. I think it’s better than Prodeus, Cultic, Ion Fury, and Dusk. The levels design isn’t top tier but the use of colour, the combat, and the speed are wonderful. All of these games are better than Doom Eternal and they all run flawlessly on Steam Deck.
I’m currently playing through RE4 Remake after making my way through the RE2 and RE3 remakes. Playing on Series X and Steam Deck in parallel using different weapon load outs. After RE4 I’ll do Dead Space and finish my play through of God of War.
Steam Deck is fucking brilliant and I’m so happy I bought one.

I've been playing DMC:V on my deck in short 20 min bursts or so, waiting in the car while picking up someone at the hospital, sometimes at the park, and at the couch when lazy. So far I think it goes really well with the deck, the levels aren't that long and you can easily put it down once you clear one. I'm on level 5, the game is decent, usually not my type of game but I'm looking forward to advancing a bit more.

In an hour of gameplay it only broke up once, turning green and blocky for a couple seconds. Other than that it with smooth, responsive, and had great image quality. I followed Deck Wizard's tutorial and settings. It's cool that it can wake and sleep your PS5, and run it without the TV being powered on. It's not really a downside, or unexpected, but it does run in 16:9, so it's letterboxed on the Deck's 16:10 screen. Shit looks really good on Deck and has decent input latency due to the 60fps mode available in many games.

I need to give this a try, I've been playing through the first Atelier Ryza game via remote play via my iPad (which is on a stand) whilst laying the bed, but I'd rather just use the Deck.

In a Star Wars kinda mood atm with the the release of Jedi Survivor so looking at some to play, I have I think almost every Star Wars game available so gonna try a bunch:
- Old Republic - Should be interesting to try an MMO on SD, the only other I've played is FFXIV and I own the PS5 Version and Windows verion and not the Steam Version so can't use that version with the expansions
- KotOR 2 with the restored content, interestingly, I've never played more than the first area of this game for some reason in spite of the first being one of my fav games ever
- Shadows of the Empire, I loved this game on n64, never tried the PC version but its was £1 so worth a shot

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
I think general consensus is that the lowest end model is the best bang for your buck. The NVMe load times are only slightly better than from the SD card. The top end model has an anti-glare glass screen, but some who have bought multiple models have said they prefer the lower-end screen. (I have the 256GB model, the screen is nice and I'm glad I didn't pay the extra $100 for the upgrade). There are others here that have upgraded their internals to have a 2TB NVMe, for less than the $250 premium of the top model - just takes time and effort.
Performance is the same for all of them.
If I were going to purchase this again, I would pick up the $400 model hands down.

I went for the 256 GB because I wanted a decent amount of storage but I didn't want the "anti-glare" screen. If you're cross-shopping the larger capacities and don't think you'll be using it in direct sunlight then take a look at this and then decide:
Very easy and cheap to expand the storage on these things via the SD card slot but you want to make sure the internal storage has enough space for game caches and the OS in general.

Personally, the anti-glare glass, fast 512 GB of storage out of the box, and little extras like the case with a colored logo and Steam community and UI stuff was worth the extra $250 to me.
You can install a NVMe drive pretty quickly and cheaply into the Deck though, and since the Deck is limited to the slower PCIe 3 speeds due to its storage controller you can opt for some pretty cheap drives that will do just fine. For 512GB you're looking at $80 + tax and shipping for something decent, $100 for something of highest quality. So, I guess it comes down to whether or not you'll be using the Deck in areas of bright lighting a lot, and how much you're willing to pay for a little convenience.

Edit: it looks like Tiny Metal is what I came for, but after watching the preview videos on Steam I am now leaning towards Wargroove....
After looking around, Wargroove was on sale for $7.99 for the PS4/5, so looks like I am playing it on the big screen.,

Default > Proton 8 > Experimental is my usually route. So I only change something if there are issues or weird things happening. If that order still won't fix an issue I google and use the respective and recommended version.

Non-steam launchers are such a pain in the ass. I just dropped them all at this point and will stick with standalone installers if I want non-Steam games. Such a shame too cause I really enjoyed Mass Effect on the go.

So my dual monitor setup that I use for work has been giving me issues for a while. (One of the monitors just flashes on and off whenever I mess up with the nvidia control panel or switch inputs on the other monitor)
So since I only use one for my business related things and the other one I use mainly for gaf, youtube and what not, I decided fuck it I'll just use 2 pcs instead with one being the deck.
So far the obvious downside is having to use double the mouse and keyboard. On the plus side since that monitor is only 1080p/60 I guess I could play on it as well if I hook up a controller to the deck.

Are there any recent benchmarks comparing eMMC vs SD card vs NVMe in the Deck? I remember some games being tested back in 2022 and the results were mostly neglectable. But given this was only a handful of games I've expected tech-savy people and video channels would have dived deeper, extended their testing and compared open world streaming speed and performance and such, but I can't find anything from 2023. It's like people don't care anymore.
Thinking of upgrading to an NVMe but I'm not spending money on something that wouldn't gain anything or only in 10% of scenarios or only theoretical on paper.

You can upgrade the 64gb emmc to a 256 nvme for like 35 bucks. Performance aside, the extra room is worth the money and time. 64gb fills up with shaders pretty quickly.
This is not an issue for me. I have already a 1TB SD card and swapped the shaders and compatibility data to the SD card.
The upgrade would only be viable for me if start up and map changing loading times get better drastically.

The Rog Ally seems interesting as well hmmmm. Im going to wait until June/July to make a decision. Its nuts the rog can run God of War 3 ps3 emualtion at 60fps. Thats some mind blowing stuff, curious how switch games will run on it as well.

It does seem pretty good for the price but it's still too high for me. $700 is approaching introductory gaming laptop price. Massively better than the other Windows based handheld PCs though. If it runs the Motorstorm games at full speed for around 3 hours, I might seriosuly consider getting one.
