The Switch 2's gimmick is mouse controls.

I don't think it's lubed or anything. Just provides stability. Then again Switch 1 also has that.

You mean the thing to press the shoulder buttons easier? This does not appear to be in the same vein as adding the agronomics to the joycon.

I'm curious about what plans Nintendo has for that extra USB-C.

keyboards for when its in tabletop mode? it's a good question

This version of the Switch doesn't need the dock to output to a tv (like steamdeck and other handheld PC) and you can usb-c to HDMI out from the top and still charge the device from the bottom.

its for USB headphones

This is still technically a rumour but based on the trailer we saw, I think it's very much confirmed that the switch will have an optical sensor allowing for traiditonal mouse support. This is based on the movements of the joycons sliding all over the place.

and well this.

Fantastic news all around right?

So let's look at it.
Both the joycons will have 6 inputs each unless I'm missing something obviously:
The 4 face buttons, ZR/L or R/R and the thumbstick pressed in. I'm ignoring the analog stick itself of course.

My question is. What craziness will Nintendo have in store with this feature? Some members mentioned a Fire Emblem with mouse controls.

It certainly might open itself up to more PC ports but I suppose there is a lack of inputs like a keyboard would have but when you open it up to perhaps using both joycon controllers for one player and having access to 12 inputs? Could be a game changer.

I'm thinking for an FPS it could be something.
Could the new Call of Duty take advantage of this?
Could there is a mode in Metroid Prime 4 specifically for this?

I have to believe they have something more in mind for this than merely a new Wario Ware with mini games or a new Mario paint.
Or is it just an easier way to get around their Nintendo Eshop :D

I think honestly there is massive potential in this control scheme. It could replace gyro as the preferred way to play Splatoon and then some.
What do you think? I would definetly like to hear more about this.

The most exciting thing in all this for me is not the mouse feature but that probably the bumpers will be touch sensitive.

Imagine changing weapons or items on a wheel menu by sliding the bumper. I want it.

I think Nintendo will release a proper add on for the Joycon to make it feel like a proper mouse.

By having a guarantee mouse support on Switch 2, it will probably will convince other devs to fully implement mouse control for their games instead of half ass it.

Unless the game uses only one joycon as a mouse and that's it (and there's some buttons on it you can use like your thumb), I dont see how it can be comfortably teamed up with the other joycon as the button presser (like using it for functions like left handed keyboard usage).

Try playing a shooter using both hands with a mouse in each hand. Especially when the Switch 2 would have the joycons point up on the thin side.

Suppose it work work/feel like this PS3 era third party controller.

I'm hopeful this feature means more games have mouse support baked-in and therefore also accept a kb/m plugged in.

Select games currently allow it on Switch 1 like Fortnite. If this is a thing hopefully that number goes up. If it's locked-down and you are required to use the joycon, that's going to make many Switch games less frustrating but not exactly a second coming thing for me.

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
It's cool but probably an optional scheme, if at all supported, for 99% of games. Since the system is heavily portable and TV sofa mouse style gameplay is hardly convenient for most people's setup. Nothing like the gimmick of other systems like Wii that focused on theirs. Even for optional T/FPS play it's probably not great since you lose access to many buttons with it. So it's really gonna be mostly for the few games that decide to focus on this method and are limited/elevated by it. Still neat I guess and they probably have some cool ideas for it but yeah. For T/FPS better to support mkb.

Edit: ok so actually you could probably press all face buttons reasonably conveniently when using it as mouse on the right hand/joycon so maybe it'll actually work for FPS too, Idk. But not great for left handers with that analog stick placement, if the sticks were symmetrical then it could work better.

I don't know about people saying the bumper (L/R) is touch sensitive to use as scroll wheel, if you're holding it on your right hand for example the bumper would be primary/left click and the trigger the right click so it can't be the bumper that is touch sensitive for scroll wheel use, or we all re-learn.

I'm doing the hot take that you are reading way too much into that. The attachment is just to attach the new joycons to the wrist straps so they don't end up embedded into your TV while playing the Switch Sports with extra waggle.

Doubt it. I think it was a cute animation of the joycons racing to the Switch 2.

I can’t imagine that trigger making for a good “mouse button”, which are supposed to be clicky.
Pictures of the underside show that the joycons have something that clearly looks like a mouse sensor. Could be something else but i cant really think of anything.

In the Tron'ish sequence where two controllers slide across the table with an attachment, that's clearly mouse functionality being shown.
Seems like a no-brainer for a next-gen Splatoon game.

Will MS & Sony scramble to implement similar solutions, or just encourage more m+kb controls in games?

Uh dude, almost every shooter has mkb on console now.

The one thing that got me confused is that both joycons have this feature. Double mouse control? Left handed people redeemed?

Anyway, yes guys, you can use mouses on your lap, specially the wireless. You all survived trackpad and the minuscule nature of joycons, you will survive this too.

I should go back and edit that post. Someone else pointed it out too, and yeah - looks like a mouse.
