The Switch 2's gimmick is mouse controls.

Uh dude, almost every shooter has mkb on console now.

Suuuuure, but how about other genres? Is there M+KB support in Baldur's Gate?

The one thing that got me confused is that both joycons have this feature. Double mouse control? Left handed people redeemed?

Anyway, yes guys, you can use mouses on your lap, specially the wireless. You all survived trackpad and the minuscule nature of joycons, you will survive this too.

1: left handed people.

2: split joycon play, so player 1 and 2 have mouse controls.

3: could be used in other gimmicky ways as well. like a game could make you swipe across the sensors to do stuff... like a Madio Party Minigame where you have to flick something as fast as possible, and you do it by quickly swiping across the sensor. in this case each player using a sideways joycon needs that functionality as well.

But even for games that use 2 joycons per player, you could do gimmicky stuff with it that might require a sensor on each.

In the Tron'ish sequence where two controllers slide across the table with an attachment, that's clearly mouse functionality being shown.
Seems like a no-brainer for a next-gen Splatoon game.

Will MS & Sony scramble to implement similar solutions, or just encourage more m+kb controls in games?

That would actually be a cool gimmick, imho.

I wonder how this will control with Mariokart? You know Nintendo’s going to use it as a showpiece for new controller features. That’s usually their thing.

Queue the copycats come next generation of handheld PC's lol.

Thats actually a really great idea if it does function the way we think it does. Can play RTS and assuming you can use a keyboard, some FPS or TPS games for better accuracy.

Yeah, the trailer basically confirmed it. Will be interesting to see how well/if it works. I’m not too sure how useful it’ll be outside of tabletop mode, which I never use.

Lenovo Go already does this with the right controller in FPS mode. Not the exact same thing but it’s still a mouse.

I don't think they'll force it into a driving game. Splatoon & Metroid Prime, or software developed for the tech, like Mario Paint will be used to demonstrate the tech IMO.

Where are the motherfucking ANALOGUE triggers on the controller? How do Nintendo expect us to play racing games? Accelerating with the fucking R Stick?

This shit is so stupid. They annihilate everyone who wants to play a racing game on Switch.

Wait, really!? I've wanted M+K support on consoles for years man. Diablo 4 on this? Yesssss.

damn, you've been living under a rock then. because many console games already do that.

CoD, Fortnite, Warframe, Alan Wake 2, Age of Empires 2/4, Cyberpunk, Gears 5, Halo Infinite, even Kena

Most people own tables in their houses and use them with laptops and desktops etc.

Yes, and I used laptops with mouses all of the time. Even that isn't great "great" for gaming, that's why I was talking about comfort. With a proper Desktop setup it's obviously something different since the way the display is arranged and everything lines up well. With a laptop you kinda end up like weidly looking down on the screen and stuff. It just sucks. With a smaller device (phone, tablet, switch) this becomes even more of an issue

Sure it works well for something short or whatever, it's not AWFUL, but it's just not a selling point imo.

The gimmick get even more gimmicky.

How in the name of Mario’s hat is a mouse for a console a gimmick? It’s older than the dirt and has been used for ages. Niche? Sure but with user created content and pc ports it should be no surprise.

Nintendo has had gimmicks the past no doubt, this just seems like the natural progression of motion control.

Now if the add this in for now same reason to like Smash Brothers or Zelda, then we’ll talk.

This would level the playing field when playing against PC players in shooters.

I am not sitting at a desk to use this functionality. I will use a lap desk that I have for my wireless keyboard and mouse for PC gaming in my living room. I hope that Nintendo or a 3rd party releases a mouse as separate peripheral because that dors not look comfortable to hold the Joy con in mouse position.

Interesting. I put a joycon on its side and seems doable.
I think it's more about new ways to play than attracting pc ports. But... who knows. Can be both.

It's kind of the opposite. Nintendo is copycatting Lenovo here.

Sounds decent for tabletop here. I have a really hard time seeing how this would work well when playing on the couch though.

Hoping for the best. Potentially it sounds perfect for stuff like Metroid Prime 4 and Splatoon.

I'm confused, how do you guys propose this would work? Would you need to, like in the trailer and like with an optical mouse, need to move the joycons around on a flat stable surface (like a desk?)? Because that doesn't seem ergonomic at all in this context. If they'd go with some kind of visual tracking (like the quest controllers) I could maybe see this work, but like a mouse? Nah, that's reaching imo (or Nintendo is even more retarded than I thought)

Add desktop mode to tabletop, handheld and tv mode.

Switch 1 has regular bluetooth and usb. You don't need to turn your game system into The Homer to support mouse control.

It's a feature that guarantees you always have a mouse built into the controller with the standard kit in portable mode. It's a more complete rudimentary setup that isn't dependent on anything else. And if you do want to plug in a mouse, making this feature standard makes it more likely to be supported by third parties than can choose either way. Doom didn't allow you to use a mouse, why not? The ability is there, you can in Fortnite.

It's simply a good thing.

OH man here's a thought what if the make a sequel to MARIO paint and make it a pack in title for the Switch 2! (Make Mario paint 2 you cowards!!). Also I think the last time Nintendo made a pack in title was like Wii U?

It would be cool to get a Mario Paint, but if it's a pack in game it should basically be an afterthought app, not a big deal. I don't think mouse control should be the "big gimmick" tied to a pack in game like Wii Sports.

Mario Paint 2 finally?

My mother bought me the original Mario Paint for my birthday when I was 11 years old back in 1992. I use to spend more time with Mario Paint than I did with any other SNES game in my library. I literally learned how to do pixel art from that game, as well as animation. As I would make animation by recording it to a VCR.

If anything, Nintendo should just have Marip Paint pre-loaded into the Switch 2 OS, like a paint program, music maker and flipbook animation software.

I can also garuntee this is NOT the only "gimmick" for the system. They never would have shown this in the first trailer otherwise. They knew we'd pick up on this.

There is something else.

My guess is advanced pointer controls as well so wii emulation would be compatible. I do wonder what this C button thing is though. It's covered up or removed from the official render as shown in the image above.
