UPDATE: FF XVI 3.5M units sold were an estimate by a Toyo Securities analyst, and not a statement made by Square Enix President Takashi Kiryu

Good to see the 3.5 million number was made up. It was difficult to believe, frankly, only seeing Amazon USA numbers monthly for those two years it gave some 150k, plus the alleged 280-300k on PC, the 3M launch.. only 3.5 was too few copies.

As for me it was a great game. Somewhat flawed, ok (no altered status, no elemental damage, not too much depth in equipment, many side stories very generic) but with a lot of heart, amazing graphics and music, great artistic design and solid playability.

Yep. Definitely not a perfect Final Fantasy by my expectations too. They can definitely improve sidequests and their animations, color grading (it was a tad too grim for my taste for most of the game), increase difficulty somewhat, and focus more on RPG elements.

But I still enjoyed the hell out of it. The boss battles and summons vs summon were what I've always wanted since watching the CGI cutscenes of old FFs. The combat is engaging (if you choose to engage with it), the music is amazing and the main story was great (I wish they lingered on the political stuff a bit more, though). And they definitely listened to some complaints, since they improved difficulty and colour gradient, particularly in the last one.

For their first mainline not online FF, it was a very solid and enjoyable attempt and I hope we get to see another mainline FF from them with everything they learned from FFXVI.

Probably Hideki Yasuda wasn't far off the mark though as the game was not even on the top 20 Best selling game in the US from 1/5/2024 through 2/1/2025. Unlike FF7 Rebirth, after the PC release.

FFXVI got a ugly art style, reminds me of the FFXIV art style which I hated.

The graphics/art style should be more like FFVII Remake/Rebirth moving forward for new FF games.

It was ridiculous to believe such nonsense.

My safe guess is around 4.5mil.

Just over 4m on PS5 and the the rest on PC.

Not good or great, but not a total disaster. With merchandise, PS5 exclusivity money etc they probs did just about find with those kinds of numbers.

It released in 2023.
Yes. But if it has sold a lot better than 3.5, like 4 - 5+ mil ish then it should at least be on the top 20 list, after the PC version was released. Like Dragon ball sparking zero sold 5+ Million Copies by February 4, 2025 and it's on the list at no 13. It takes two was released in 2021 and it's on the list too at no 20. Anyway, it's just my opinion based on that sales data. I could be wrong.
