So is that the easiest way to tell a BVM from a PVM? Which is better again?
yeah, BVM is the most versatile one.

rough images but you can tell by either having the controls built in or external.
But like Mega suggested, a 14" PVM is a great small sized screen for casual use. A high quality BVM is the best if you have room for it. a BVM also does not have integrated audio so you'll need external audio devices as well. And make sure it has the RGB input card in the back.
Most tv-broadcast screens have these two cards, and you'll want the R G B board as pictured here:
