So is that the easiest way to tell a BVM from a PVM? Which is better again?

yeah, BVM is the most versatile one.

rough images but you can tell by either having the controls built in or external.
But like Mega suggested, a 14" PVM is a great small sized screen for casual use. A high quality BVM is the best if you have room for it. a BVM also does not have integrated audio so you'll need external audio devices as well. And make sure it has the RGB input card in the back.

Most tv-broadcast screens have these two cards, and you'll want the R G B board as pictured here:

Thanks for the quick lesson Noisepurge! I actually have several PVMs of varying sizes that I can get access to where I work. I probably couldn't get all of them but definitely at least one. The largest look about 19 or 20 inches. And they have the BNC(?) hook ups.

Ah this is promising. With that Startech capture device. Does it only output to your pc screen? Is there any way of using it with a TV as well?

If you have a powered component (or whatever video input) distributor yeah. It doesnt have to be powered, but via GAF recommendations, you dont get picture degradation that way.

At any rate This is how my chain goes: RGB to YUV converter plugged to powered component distributor input, Then output to the TV and the other output to the Startech USB. That way I can play as intended on TV without worrying, and still have it record on the PC.

It is firmware based, you can swap regions using AnyRegionChanger. My Wii was NTSC-J using AnyRegionChanger I changed it to PAL and SCART works perfectly fine.

My 20M4E was from this bunch too. Geometry is just a bit off, but overall, I've been really happy about it. Even moreso after I got my RGB modded AV Famicom. Still waiting for a decent camera for a few pics.

e: a lot more Finns here than I realized. Love asa's retro hardware inspector there.

Far reduced sound buzzing to practically non-existent which is what you want, and trust me, sound buzzing on scart cables are annoying as hell. That's one thing I hate about scart and why I prefer scart cables with audio out.

Sounds like it's worth nabbing one for that reason alone. I haven't seen a Saturn scart cable with RCA audio... do they even exist?

Going by the description of the Saturn cable with audio out, maybe not as she said the audio doesn't even come from scart, just those 2 rcas.

I took some photos of the monitors that I have access to a few weeks back. I just looked at them again. I took pics of the backs of a few. There are some larger JVCs (about 19/20 inch) and some smaller Sonys (I think about 11 and 13 inch). The back of the Sony says it's a PVM. The JVCs I think all have controls built in so they're likely BVMs. However those have manufacture dates on the back and two of them are from 2002 and 2008. That big one from 08 would seem to be the one to get...

I'd like to take a console in and try some of them out some weekend when no one is in the building...

The BVM-20F1U with 8000 hours is very sharp, easily more than my 13-inch 14L2 which was my previous standard for sharpness. It's also significantly brighter and colorful than my 20G1U (70k hours) even with brightness, contrast and R-G-B levels barely above default values.

Oh that sucks. Were the big PVMs gone too? What you have is still really good. But find that input card to get the most out of your JVC or you will be limited to S-video and composite on it. S-video is not such a bad thing and you have the BVM for RGB.

I much prefer connecting the Wii via component and suggest you do too if you can. I have currently connected it with an RGB cable and I can say it's a tad too blurry for my liking.

Yeah, I got to the stacks shown in the photo in 10 seconds after the place opened, and already the all the big monitors were taken! Atleast they went to people who will use them at least judging by their enthusiasm & speed.

I bought an RGB cable for my Saturn from thefoo.83 and one from Retrogaming Cables a couple months ago, and I found the one I've got from thefoo way sturdier and better quality overall. Especially around the plug, with Retrogaming Cables' one being cut pretty roughly and not fitting well into the console's AV socket (I even had the first one replaced, because of that), whereas thefoo's one has a very nice spring joint to ensure a perfect and clicky contact.
Since it was a simple RGB cable with no audio out, though (I don't have an XRGB Mini, and my CRT is just a regular Sony Trinitron), there's still some buzz coming out on white screens. Would you suggest me to get the same cable you've got? I'm a bit confused by the pictures, I can't figure out how those audio connectors work. ^^;

My guess is no, since it's basically a pass through device. When the NESRGB is on I don't think the side composite works at all. The signal will only run all the way to the side composite if it's not interrupted by the NESRGB. You have to tweak the install to leave the side composite operational (have a 'no palette' selection), but I don't think there's a way to have both running at the same time.
