Complete my first mini today. Put a bit too much nuln oil on it but for a first go I’m happy. Took me around 2 hours total so I suspect I’m super slow

Sorry about the duplicate pics, not sure what I did.

I’ll do the base once I have another brush suited to it

Looks great!

The trick I found to nuln oil is to use it sparingly. Put it on areas of large amounts of texture and then, after 40 min to an hour, (when its fully dry) reestablish the base paint on those areas, but avoid hte recesses. That will bring back the vibrant color while keeping the dark recesses dark.

So after spending a week with the Old World rule books, I'm left feeling rather intimidated. I've tried theory crafting an army, but to be honest I'm feeling overwhelmed.

The rule books are crystal clear in what's required, but it doesn't do a good job of teaching philosophy behind army building. I'm at a loss at what a proper army should look like and what synergy would be. Basic things like unit size and load out are overwhelming

Also took a few more steps forward on my jab bunker.

I really love this. It is so enjoyable. My kids come down and do some too which is great. I’m heading to the store tomorrow to grab a few more paints and maybe a box of knights.

Any recommendations on best ways to attach decals? I just complete my first 3 space marines last night 100% other than decals so I’d like to call them all done.

I spent a ton of time on these, probably way more than normal, and learnt a bunch of tricks which will speed up my next ones.

I primed my captain, librarian, and terminators last night so I’ll get started on those this weekend.

Get some Microset and Microsol and watch a video or two on how to use them.

The gunpla community has a lot of videos about this, as does the wargaming community.

Applying decals to rounded areas like shoulders is more technical than doing a decal on a flat area like a land raider chassis. For the rounded areas, use of Microsol will be important and some tactical slicing with a very sharp exacto knife can help it settle into place. Most videos will go over this.

Use Ard Coat then wet the transfer, apply to model (cut a slit if it's on a curved surface) apply Ard Coat over the top then Lahmian Medium to matt the finish.

This was my first more complex model last year, instead of standard marines.

Looking good! I just got my Necrolith Bone Dragon primed for painting. Hopefully will knock that out sometime this month. Going to put a lot more time and effort into him than I have anything else :D

Did a painting session at my local store and it was really helpful. I’m not creative or artistic in any way so they gave me awesome tips. I got in trouble for painting out of the pot haha. I had no idea.

Also, it became very clear to me that while push together pieces is easier, it’s so inferior to the glue method. They suggested gluing them together and going down that route 100%.

Makes me want to get better for sure after seeing their work. I never can leave the store without lightening my wallet $50 or so lol

Did this guy up tonight. It’s my first terminator so I’m rather happy as I was worried.

I can fell myself getting better slowly. Still need to do some base work of course but still, making progress I think

3300 point army battle

Orks vs Imperial Knights

First round, I took out one of the big knights, but not before he did significant damage to Stompa. Lost my Dakka Jet right off the bat to a barrage of firepower. Got halfway across the table and then deployed Ghazghul and some meganobz and another squad of nobz. Have more nobz in the battle wagon and a squad of tank bustas in the Gorkanaut.

Worked on a few more terminators last night. So far, I’m happy, but I really need to learn how to base them.

Basing can be surprisingly easy with a few simple tricks. Cork and wood chips can make good looking rocks or pavement. Texture paste for ground/mud, and plenty of little tufts to add color.

Second round done this past weekend. Lots of shit down. I lost my Gorkanaut (or perhaps Morkanaut) all of my deff kopters and my battle wagon The battle wagon exploded and did a signficant amount of damage to both my nobz and his knight.

Ghazghull took out two of the smaller knights by himself. He's a badass.

Stompa took out of the big knights with his "smash" move. After that, I think Stompa will be getting a shit-ton of ballistic fire coming his way next round. Doubt he survives. Now the question is can my nobz and boyz swarm enough on the remaining knights to win the day.

Gargants hard to paint? I’d assume they are due to the shapes

You talking about Stompa? Nah....he wasn't so bad. Just time consuming. I still need to put a wash on some of the metallics. Right they look far too clean for orks. lol
Good to know.

Last night I spent a couple hours doing some walls for my hab bunker. I was thinking they looked nice and shiny. Too nice and shiny. I had done the bunker itself up with iron warrior while I did these with leadbelcher. Luckily I only did 2 walls so far. Bit of a goof though. That’s 2 paint errors in two days for me.

I’ll restart tonight.

Anyone have a good recommendation for a paint stand? I’m starting to accumulate a bunch

If you re in the US and I have a Hobby Lobby or Michaels nearby then they usually have something. We bought a little cheapo wooden stand that works pretty well. We should have bought two. lol

Canada, there is some dude selling cheap stands near us and I’m grabbing one tomorrow but I have no idea if they are decent

So I set up my citadel colour account on my iPad the other day. Did my projects up, my pain lists, wish lists, etc. I walked into the store with my phone assuming I could just log in there but the damn lists don’t transfer over. That’s pretty crappy in this day and age.

I actually grab some my wife found on Facebook last night. The dude sells them for $10 and cuts them with his c&c machine. They aren’t perfect but they are amazing for the price. Holds like 50 paints.

Those look great. What paints did it use? I love the glow effect on the barrels

Good question, they were done last Aug/Sept so I can't remember them all but the main colour was Cryptek Armourshade, the green was Tesseract Glow, there's also a mix of Runelord Brass, Retributor Armour & some others too.

Writing on the banners was done with ink pens (I have a Sakura pigma micron set). I used a size 5 or 7 synthetic brush for most of the painting here, along with a banged up old size 4 for dry-brushing in places. The size doesn't matter as much as the ability of the brush to have a nice tip that can be easily controlled. I don't like too small brushes as they dry out so quickly it doesn't give me enough time to paint.
