What’s the best/scariest horror game you’ve played?

Horror/thriller games are my favorite genre. I’m thinking of getting a new horror game that is a little bit more underground because I’ve played most of the mainstream stuff. Games like Devotion by Red Candle; any particular recommendations?

OG Resident Evil and Code Veronica X, at different ages, but still pretty young in my life.

More recent definitely Silent Hill 2 remake, specially because I didn't play the original.

Scariest is a weird one when you love horror but don't really get "scared" by film/games... but can appreciate the spooky. That new SH2 remake really is horror cranked up. Spookier than the spookiest part of RE and it's half the game.

Unfortunately horror games have gone the route of horror movies where most of them aren't really all that good or scary.

But in recent years... phasmophobia brought genuine scares the first time playing it and not experiencing it before (scares run thin after a couple of matches)

PT is still up there for being the most genuinely unnerving and creepy experience. The evil within 2 had some potentially creepy moments but never held onto the fear for too long.

No code studios games have great atmosphere for not really being horror games.

Scariest might be OG Silent Hill 2 (only just started the remake)

Best (fun to play) might be RE4 remake.

Scariest overall : Probably Project Zero 1 or 2 (I was shitting myself)
Scariest recently : Alien Isolation was pretty scary. This gen I would also say Silent Hill 2 is pretty efficient (and way scarier than any other recent AAA horror releases except for Alien)

Something like a personal top 5 of games excelling in generating actual fear and the ones I consider to be the best overall package (in no particular order).

Scariest:

Silent Hill 1
Amnesia: The Dark Descent
Condemned: Criminal Origins
Forbidden Siren (that Harumi mission in the abandoned house.... man...)
Visage

Overall best games/ the ones I like replaying the most:

Silent Hill 2 (I'll cheat and put both the OG and the remake here)
Resident Evil 1 (same thing)
The Evil Within
Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth
Fatal Frame 2 (kinda like the first two, even though I greatly prefer the original)

I forget that the evil within was quite fucked up in the first big farm house with how you’re ambushed and how unpredictable the enemies were. That shit was proper scary.

Definitely. So many memorable moments in this game...

I think the second one is objectively better when it comes to actual gameplay and overall polish, but it also lost some of the magic the first one had.

Propagation: Paradise Hotel on PSVR2/Quest is the scariest game I've ever played. Basically an indie REmake.

Fatal Frame is probably the scariest flat game I've played.

Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water gets an honorable mention too. Game is sorely underrated, pretty scary at times too, atmosphere and sound design is top shelf.

ZombiU/Zombi is also a total dime and legit scary due to its Souls-like element. Always on edge cause death is a big deal in the game.

Visage offers best scares from modern games. There are obvious jumpscares, but also smaller creepy moments like when you notice someone's watching you from around the corner.

Outlast 1 and its expansion offer the best cat & mouse horror moments.

Condemned 1 from the PS3/360 era. I remember losing it only on my first playthrough after one of the enemies jumped out of the locker.

Clive Barker's Undying from much older titles. I will admit I haven't replayed it in years, so maybe my opinion would change.

Devotion is good. It’s like the best game based upon PT’s success. Hands down. I don’t think there’s anything better in that particular genre.

I loved the Haunted Mansion/Hotel in Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, it was right up my alley.

I couldn't finish RE7, I'm a chicken. But, I've been playing some games with horror elements and feel more prepared now for a re-run.

I expect to play Alien: Isolation in the future.

RE7 is great in that it truly is terrifying but you will be an unstoppable machine by the end. The game does a great job with building you up over the course of the campaign, like all good survival horror should do.

Watching my brother playing this in the mid 90s and seeing that scene as a 6 year old kid.. I couldn't sleep for a week and I still can't play horror games. Did continue watch my brother play them all though. Other than RE1 I would probably say the original Silent Hill 2 as many others here... so technically I guess I haven't played them
