Nah, its related to my last hot take but, the reason pc gaming is becoming popular is because there's been less and less reasons to have a console.-Related to my last point. PC gaming becoming mainstream is not because it’s a better platform for games. It’s become so popular because streaming has become so big. PC gaming is by far the best platform for streamers and young people want what they see streamers have. If streamers were all on console then young people would be on console (this makes me sound so damn old. I’m 32). It’s not the only reason for the rise but I think it’s one of the biggest reasons. It’s simply the current fad. PC gaming was better before it became mainstream.
Thats literally a gaming console made with modern day technology.Nah, its related to my last hot take but, the reason pc gaming is becoming popular is because there's been less and less reasons to have a console.
In fact, i'd argue the sole reason for there to still be a console market at all is brand recognition. If Sony, Nintendo and MS all decided instead of consoles, they'll just launch form factor PCs with console interfaces a la steam deck, and some other company decides to launch their own, de facto, brand new console, what would you rather get? What do you think most people who used to buy playstations, xboxes and switches would get?
The fact you're not just willing to entertain the idea of such a thing being a console, but also fully embracing it, is proof enough i'm right. Console as a business is dead, all that exists today are brands.Thats literally a gaming console made with modern day technology.
And following this logic the answer is yes; if all you needed was enough capital for some minor designing and marketing then there can absolutely be a bunch of new comers flooding the market over the next few years. They would need cool looking designs and competitive prices; essentially commodifying gaming consoles into what modern day smartphones are today.
And just like smartphones, the big boys (Samsung/Apple > Sony/Nintendo) would hold the lion's share of the market, but it doesn't mean they would have global loyalty, and competitors will certainly come up with creative and unique ways to entice players into buying their consoles instead.
Tl;dr: Consoles will always exist in one form or another, for one reason above all: Convenience.
Why are you arguing with me about this? Is it semantics? The fact you're not just willing to entertain the idea of such a thing being a console, but also fully embracing it, is proof enough i'm right. Console as a business is dead, all that exists today are brands.
You can call it whatever you like, at the end of the day you'd just be buying a PC coated with paint in the colors of your favorite brand... or already are if thats what you consider modern consoles to be.
Bullshit. I complain about people wanting the latest bullshit features in games in regards to graphics and yet I am quite content playing games on Switch or cheaper indie games on Steam. In fact, most games on Switch are more aesthetically pleasing than the majority of shit released by so called triple A devs today. I find the graphics on Mario Wonder FAR more pleasing to look at than something like Spiderman 2. And it will age FAR better as well.Gamers who complain about gamers that want eye candy are the same gamers that would complain over the lack of nice visuals.
I'm not arguing semantics, i'm pointing out the obvious that a form-factor PC is not a console. However, the fact you're considering it one, and that many other people are willing to do the same, going as far as changing the definition to a "entertainment box made primarily for gaming" if they must, instead of a "entertainment box made for gaming and gaming only" with maybe a couple of extra features - because this isn't semantics, this is what consoles are - proves consoles are already dead. That you can have PCs with all the advantages of a console and none of the disadvantages, to the point even the most die-hard console-only player couldn't tell the difference and would gladly play on a ready-made PC with just a few tweaks to the interface, and their loyalty brand logo splashed on startup of course. Why are you arguing with me about this? Is it semantics?
Yes, consoles are fluid with the technology of time; main thing is its an entertainment box made primarily for gaming. A lot of people in the world would prefer that over the hassle of setting up a PC.
You are underestimating just how Windows PC illiterate most people are now both young and old. There are a disturbing number of people that cannot even navigate a file system to copy and paste or do simple keyboard data entry. This is why phone and console gaming will always be a bigger market. It has less to do with the brand and more to do with your average person literally not knowing how to even operate a PC or even how to install a game on one.Nah, its related to my last hot take but, the reason pc gaming is becoming popular is because there's been less and less reasons to have a console.

Agree with you, but the part about the culture war. The only way to skip the culture war is just not to reference it, but if you go into any of those western publishers/game studios website you will see how "into it" they are, they have whole pages dedicated to it even before they have made a single game. So yeah, skipping the drama of culture wars is easy, just not be a politically-driven company. It's time to let go of those old giant pillars (EA, Ubisoft, Activision) and look into newer publishers. They are out there and have been trying to get your attention, but they simply don't have the level of money as the huge 3rd party AAA guys do. Many of you probably used to try random games from random unknown publishers and devs when you were younger, especially those bargain bin games or oddball 7/10 experiences that give you something unique, even if it was somewhat janky.
Now people are afraid to even go near a slightly unpolished AA or indie game unless they see others singing praise of it, and even then it has to pass a bunch of random parameters before a demo of it is touched.
How can any company grow when they are being stifled from both ends (larger corps and gamers) at the very beginning? On top of that, if they're not Japanese, they have to walk a tightrope 1000ft in the air around culture war issues and hope that a random grifter doesn't torpedo their game's image before it even releases. It's just even more of a lottery system at that point.
I'm not even sure that's a hot take. The SNES and Genesis libraries were far more distinctive than modern consoles. Each system getting its own version of a particular IP was and is cool as hell IMO.The 8bit and 16bit console wars were awesome. I liked it better when consoles were defined by their exclusives. Bring back the days where if every console had a Batman game, then each Batman game would be different.
1- I don't know how old you are, but this definition was only true when I was an infant. I've never lived by it, and it hasn't been applicable since the 21st century.I'm not arguing semantics, i'm pointing out the obvious that a form-factor PC is not a console. And on your last point, it's not would prefer, many people already buy PCs without the hassle of setting it up. Laptops are half or more of the market-share of PCs, and even with desktops its possible to buy ready or semi-ready builds, or just pay a shop $50 to build it for you. Not counting the form-factor PCs already out on the market.
Trust me, i know this far too well. But ultimately what you're describing is simply a matter of interface and quality control, it doesn't matter whether its a PC or a console doing it.You are underestimating just how Windows PC illiterate most people are now both young and old. There are a disturbing number of people that cannot even navigate a file system to copy and paste or do simple keyboard data entry. This is why phone and console gaming will always be a bigger market. 1- It's just proof the erosion of a de facto console market has been going for a while now. Not coincidentally, it also matches the period when console brands consolidated, and the period many console players began complaining consoles were losing their identity (yes, these talks have been going since the ps360 days).1- I don't know how old you are, but this definition was only true when I was an infant. I've never lived by it, and it hasn't been applicable since the 21st century.
2- Its simply not true that a fully functioning PC is the same thing as a function-limited gaming console. If someone is either tech savvy enough to setup it that way, or tech illiterate enough to think that PC is just a gaming console with extra steps, both of these scenarios lie at the feet of the end user, and don't convey the potential of the device itself.
If you still disagree then thats fine. You've been respectful and its been an interesting discussion. Have a great day.

2- I am saying a fully functioning PC is not the same thing as a function limited console. And that's the thing, a Steam Deck is a fully functioning PC, as are these other form-factor PCs, and if the console brands launched their own version of it, so would those be.
Hold a button, select an icon, BAN its a PC now.
If a Pcstation 6 or a deSwitchtop decided their next device would be like that, you wouldn't care, none of their effective userbase would care. They'd all gladly gobble up this new device, and they would enjoy it. Because consoles are effectively dead, and no one would care if they put the final nail in the coffin.
Pretty much, and they're probably gonna become more and more PC-like. I wouldn't be surprised if the PS6 were to straight up use Vulkan instead of their custom API (which is already based on Vulkan). So modern day consoles are just PCs designed with controller input UI, streamlined usage, and take you straight to your gaming library and gaming hub?
Yup I think we both have no qualms with that.
These aren’t hot takes. These are well known and accepted. The early Monster Hunter games were tedious and kind of sucked.
Final Fantasy 11 is a really annoying game.
Phil Spencer was Head of first party studios during the time Mattrick was CEO so I think a lot of of your praise is actually due to Phil Spencer, broDon Mattrick was a very competent leader and a rare industry veteran that was an Xbox CEO at the wrong time and with the wrong higher-ups and O'm not shure he was even the main driving force behind TV and DRM disaster.
At least he easily secured a sizeable and truly diverse library for XO launch, including even AAA games from some from prime Sony partner like Insomniac. And while PS4 was more powerful and tad cheaper, Sony fixed their exclusive situation way later in that gen. Outside of Resogun and Shadowfall PS4 library was dry as Nevada for almost a year.
That feat was never ever repeated by a Used Car Salesman Phil.
A lot of launch games for XO came from third party, like Sunset Overdrive, D4, Dead Rising 3, Ryse: Son of Rome and so on. 1st party at that time was knee deep in Kinect and Lionhead died around the same time plus Forza 5 was a barebones disaster with meme cardboard crowds.Phil Spencer was Head of first party studios during the time Mattrick was CEO so I think a lot of of your praise is actually due to Phil Spencer, bro![]()
I’ll preface this post by saying that I’ve played on PC nearly nonstop since I was like 6 in the late 90s and I spend my gaming time pretty much split 50/50 between console and PC. I don’t want to deal with people like Rodrigolf or whatever the fuck his name is trying to twist my words.
-PCMR is the worst fanbase in video games. Fanboys from all sides are pathetic but PCMR in general is just insufferable. They are the BMW owners of the gaming world where they can’t possibly imagine that anybody could prefer something else. I think everybody generally knows that objectively PC gaming is the best in many ways, but they just can’t seem to get their tiny little brains around the fact that some people like what they like and don’t care about those advantages just like somebody may want a base model Elantra.
-Related to my last point. PC gaming becoming mainstream is not because it’s a better platform for games. It’s become so popular because streaming has become so big. PC gaming is by far the best platform for streamers and young people want what they see streamers have. -Xbox dying is not good for anyone and anybody wishing for it is a fucking retard.
-Nintendo is the most overrated company in gaming behind only Pokémon Company. Both companies have fans that just shovel shit in their mouth constantly and don’t care.

Yes, the post is older than the average Bioware or Obsidian employee.Damn, 1998 huh
Neil Druckmann is secretly the most based motherfucker to every walk the gaming industry.

I yearn for the days when console wars were fought with passion and courage. This oracle predicted the trans epidemic 27 years ago.
What a total load of shit. 70+ million PS5's and over 150 million Switches out in the wild would suggest otherwise.Because consoles are effectively dead, and no one would care if they put the final nail in the coffin.
I had read it. And my point still stands- what a load of shit. IF Sony and Nintendo fuck up... Well Nintendo have fucked up a few of times (N64, Gamecube and Wiiu) and still stand strong. Sony won't fuck up cause even when they do, they still sell over 70 million units (see the PS5 generation and PS3 generation). Microsoft is failing and still manages to sell over 30 million units and the gen isn't over with yet.read the entire conversation mate, better yet, this post
But you haven't answered my question. If they do, repeatedly to the point they lose costumers, or if they replace their consoles with form-factor PCs (as MS is already rumored to do), would any other console come up to fill-in their shoes? Would there be any interest in such a thing?I had read it. And my point still stands- what a load of shit. IF Sony and Nintendo fuck up... So no, consoles are not dead and not going anywhere. PC's and consoles can co-exist as they have for many many years. But keep peddling the consoles are dying/dead mantra and I will continue to sit here and continue laughing!
That's about the biggest IF I have ever heard! Yes, you may be right but it isn't happening. Where does EA go to release all their games? Microsoft? Nintendo? Sony? Capcom? PC will not suffice for these companies. Consoles are NEEDED so IF they go down someone will come up. Be it Apple. Be it Steam. Someone will produce a console for these companies to release their games or else they have PC and nowhere else to produce their games! But you haven't answered my question. Like i said, if you want a more "likely" assumption, assume the console makers start making form factor PCs. Would the console public move to those products made by their favored companies, or would they rather some other entity produces a console because they absolutely need their gaming device to be a console? That's about the biggest IF I have ever heard! 30fps is a valid and compelling aesthetic which can have a positive effect on the atmosphere of a game.
As mush as I am a fucking snob regarding fps I have to begrudgingly agree. Some games that are even decades old looking absolutely fantastic on 30fps. The cinematic feel cannot be understated30fps is a valid and compelling aesthetic which can have a positive effect on the atmosphere of a game.
