What are your *Actual* hot takes regarding video games? I mean ACTUAL stuff that would get people riled up?

Are you one of those poor souls who barely get 30 minutes to game before bedtime?

Just enough time to boot up

Praying the game doesn’t hit you with a 10 minute unskippable cutscene

🤡
I get maybe 3 or 4 hours a week to game solo. Means a 40 hour game would take 2 1/2 months. But 40 hours is just too long anyway, most games that long are just a 10 or 15 hour game with a ton of padding.

Metadata is correct, your opinion is not. - Metadata is one of the most valuable discoveries of man. It is based on the wisdom of the crowd. The wisdom of the crowd is the idea that a group's collective opinion is better than the judgment of a single expert. It's based on the idea that a diverse group's opinions are more likely to be accurate when averaged. Usually the example of a crowd guessing a man's weight at a fair is used. When combining the wisdom of the crowd with law of large numbers, which states as the number of trials or experiments increases, the average of the results will converge to the expected value, or true population average, you get a powerful and accurate data measuring tool. That tool for us is metacritic. or open critic.

The more iterations or the higher the number of reviews, the more the actual score moves towards the true correct score and also the more likely that score is to be correct.

Most people don't understand the very basics of statistics. This ignorance leads to treating metadata as mysterious, malevolent, and flawed, yet we use it every day for everything we purchase online or in our research for what we will consume. Conspiracy theories pop up that could never possibly exist and also be kept secret about certain companies getting inflated scores when that is of course not actually possible. Metadata isn't always correct, but in the case of game reviews it is difficulty to game it much and the score the game gets is the score it is. Anything else doesn't work out. There is actually no getting around it and this isn't an opinion. Metadata in gaming is the most correct path to determining a game's quality. It is your own ignorance that is keeping you from properly being able to interpret or accept it.

Actual shit is right. Behold in its glory that Quake II engine masterpiece Kingpin from the late 90s!

Zelda Ocarina of Time on N64 was nearly unplayable. 17fps on PAL consoles. 20fps on NTSC consoles. Metacritic 99? Lmao come on! 👎

The 30fps 3DS version was alright. 8/10

If you can follow traffic laws in GTA V without losing your mind, you're the reason real-life drivers have road rage.

Oh that's one I forgot -
Trophies/achievements are inane, and anyone who says they 100%'d a game because they got all of them is an idiot.
Agreed, except for games were trophies unlock in game thing, but once again the trophy is just a notification of an unlock.

Anyone who actually hates games like Mario is not a real Gamer™

Death Stranding is an insanely boring game with a nonsensical story that tries to come off as something deep and profound with some of the worst writing I've ever seen. It is so pretentious. Kojima shouldn't be allowed to write.

EarthBound or Mother 2 is a very underwhelming game, not some great masterpiece its fans have been pushing since the internet became widespread and in used during the late 90s.

It was quite mediocre and forgettable when it was released back then and vastly overshadowed by Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana, and Final Fantasy 6. Besides being quirky, it just wasn't groundbreaking in game play or fun.

-Naughty Dog stinks. They peaked during the ps1 making 2nd rate platformers. The highlight of their games are barely interactive set pieces. I never understood the hype. Great graphics tho.

- SoulCalibur 2 is the best 3d fighting game ever and clears every Tekken game, and I love Tekken. SC2 is just that good and still holds up.

- If you’re under 35ish you kinda lack perspective on games. I don’t respect the opinion of someone who didn’t see the medium mature in real time as much as someone who did. You can never recreate going from SNES to Mario 64.

- AC Odyssey > Ghost of Sushi.

- EGS existing is a good thing. Tim Sweeney seems pretty chill. Putting the marketing budget into giving away free games is kinda genius.

- China is gonna carry Valve to crazy heights in the next decade

The presentation of COD games, the menus, the lobbies, the gun perks, everything today is treated like trash. I think COD4 was loose in a good way with a firm clear base on things like lobbies, perks and guns. That’s just my criticism.

We've had a Viking use a wrist blade, pirates doing parkour, and a Greek mercenary suplexing lions but a black Samurai? Oh hell naw!

Basic ass hot take:

GTA 6 is over hyped and you shouldn't care about it that much - Grand Theft Auto was a time and a place. It was an incredibly impressive scale for the PS2 era and that's why we were so hooked on it. There's very little reason to get excited about an open world game where you drive cars and shoot guns in 2025, especially one made by Rockstar who makes sandbox games while also enforcing linear bullshit during gameplay (GTA 5 / RDR 2 missions).

If you want hot takes that are rare....

- The Witness is one of the top 5 games of all time and Jonathan Blow is a genius designer.
- In a just world Satisfactory would have been game of the year for 2024.

A Fucking Idiot
I love gaming on my cellphone. No not casual games but actual games. It's super convenient and the graphical power is there. I spend as much time gaming on my phone as I do on my PC. I think it's a big part of the future. Right now I'm playing Alien Isolation and it looks better than it does on Xbox, performs better, and plays perfect with a controller.

Sekiro is highly overrated, its mechanics arent as good as people like pretending it is and it only gets that kind of praise because its FromSoftware.
Thank you! Somebody cheer this man. Cheer! Cheer!

I would say that no one is more of a Fromsoft fan than me, and I can't stand Sekiro. I've tried many times and it just doesn't do it for me. With time I've come to understand that I can beat Sekiro. I've beaten many harder games both before and since. I've tried to restart the game about 3 times. I usually get pretty far, then just fall off. I don't have this problem in any other soulslike except Wo Long Fallen Dynasty. I cannot stand the combat. It's like that italian plant that tastes like soap to some people, cilantro. Sekiro tastes like eating soap to me. I understand there may be something that appeals to others, but I'm past the belief that I just don't get it. I get it. I just hate it. I'll still probably buy part 2 but I hate it, lol.

My hot takes:

1- Every console manufacturer should take extreme measures in gate-keeping games on their consoles, and should openly sign exclusive content rights with 3rd party publishers, and porting to PC or competition shouldn't even be on the table (i.e. M$: fumbled the bag big time, Sony: In the process of fumbling the bag, Nintendo: Rather good regarding this till now).

2- SOMA is a mediocre game at best. Its only "Horror" or "Deep" or "Philosophical" because it reflects the player's own insecurity regarding his/her place in the universe, and what comes after. It's made from the ground up as misery porn for nihilist-esque mindsets.

3- Red dead games are slow as molasses bore-fests. They don't deserve the hype besides the horse testicles in RDR2.

4- The actual best Call of Duty game was Infinite Warfare.

Actually, all of these points are true!

Mine:

BG3 is overrated. Turn-based isometric RPG. Niche genre, not for everyone. And people pretend that it is the best game in the world for everyone. I think there are more people in the world who won't play this than who will.

Witcher 3 is the worst thing that ever happened to gaming. It popularized braindead mechanics like withcer sense, a map filled with question marks, an nonconsequential dialogue system, guided handholdy quests .

GTAV is the second worst thing that ever happened to gaming. GTAV popularized the approach for game developers to target a completely non-gaming, casual, mass audience, and became the template for most popular games for the next decades in terms of how to be a cinematic, but dull game where you just follow NPCs, listen to the dialogue, and walk from one mission objective marker to another. The completely dull, but cinematic, gameplay was popularized by GTA5.

KCD2 is a drawn-out dialogue simulator (with a very beautiful and alive world, I might add)

I played this demo and the only things I remember are all the swearing + the 3D shit log
My bros and I had the game. It actually was a shit playing game. But the atmosphere, dark colour pallete, cussing and audio were good. It was that weird time of retarded 3D graphics where character heads and bodies would be all oozing and bubbling like they are melting zombies.

1. Dark Souls 2 is better than 99% of games but sucks compared to the other souls games.

2. Lies of P is better than Bloodborne/Sekiro.

3. The last good Rockstar game was RDR1.

4. Bio shock infinite was garbage

5. Graphics whores are ruining gaming. Instead of making better games, devs focus a chunk of their efforts on making eye candy so that nerds and virgins can zoom in on their screens and look at two mosquitos fuck in the distance.

6. Injustice > Mortal Kombat

7. Oblivion was the only good Elder Scrolls game.

8. Mario galaxy is overrated.

9. Sekiro is a pretty average game with a lack of replayability. I’ve finished all the souls games dozens of times but once I got all the endings to Sekiro, it was curtains.

10. Lords of the fallen 2023 is a great souls like.

11. Remnant 1 and 2 deserve more credit and shit on most games.

12. Skyward sword is terrible.

13. Control is complete hot garbage

14. Death Stranding is a decent game but could also be used to treat insomnia.

15. Xbox is better than PlayStation in every aspect besides management and exclusives.

16. Nintendo will always be #1. PlayStation and Xbox were always fighting for second best.

17. A certain demographic of gamers claims to be the best but are constantly begging for ports of games from the “peasants”.

18. A good chunk of “enthusiasts” hardly even play games. They instead stare at their screens looking at pixels.

19. Sony is just as bad as Microsoft but are lucky Microsoft fucked up worse than they did (so far).

20. Hollow knight and Ori are shit.

I could be here all day writing these takes.

I did beat it but cant blame anyone who drops. The difficulty everyone praises it for is actually very artificial, with very specific bottlenecks or many instances where the game breaks its own rules to keep it up. It feels really unsatisfying learning how to play the game by clear sets of mechanics, only to find out later the developers didn't actually wanted you to play like that.

Overall, it feels like a game that had larger ambitions that weren't fully realized.

Gamers have access to hundreds of amazing games they actually enjoy, yet somehow spend 90% of their time online trash-talking the industry instead of, you know… playing them.

Kratos spends the entire game teaching Atreus about discipline, patience, and controlling his emotions, while simultaneously dropkicking doors, obliterating every living creature in sight, and smashing pottery like they stole something.

That’s an undeniable truth for every game ever created and every game that will ever exist

That's hardly a hot take..
