Whatcha Been Playin': Late Edition

Half way through "i am alive". Got it in the Halloween sale and i'm really liking it. Which is more then can be said for the other game i got..."amy"...game was 59p and i still feel ripped off.

I've been pouring most of my gaming time into Dragon's Crown on the Vita. It's a lot of fun and the art style is just beautiful. I can see me putting a lot more hours into this than I already have, I just want to get all 6 classes levelled up but I'm only level 60 with my fighter at the moment. I'm losing the urge to play on my 360 with my PS4 around the corner so I'm finding a new energy to put into Vita games.

I've been playing Tactics Ogre on it as well for the first time and that is an incredible game as well. I can't believe it took me so long to take the plunge and get the game.

I just finished FEAR 2 a few nights ago, which was meh (not a mindblowing game or anything but appropriate for October) and since I've moved onto Sin and Punishment 2 on the Wii which I am enjoying.

Xenoblade Chronicles. I am at the fallen arm at level 57. Definitely one of my new favorite games.

Dynasty Warriors 8 and One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2. 2 warriors games at one time and loving every second.

Diablo 3 PS3. I like it much more with the controller.

Mario and Luigi: Dream Team. My first Mario and Luigi game. So far so good.

Bit.Trip Runner 2. Thoroughly addictive.

Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3. Always playing this and am still bad.

Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams. My favorite Onimusha game.

That's all I've been playing. Going for a max social links on my first playthrough. Hope I don't mess up lol.

Runner 2 is so fun, and addictive. In the second world...really need to play more. The alt costumes are amazing. And if you like Dream Team, I would recommend the earlier entries really strongly. Partners in Time and Bowser's Inside Story would both be playable on your 3DS. If you can though, definitely play Superstar Saga, it's a great game as well.

I honestly meant to post on Sunday at Noon but I'm at a BBQ and I forgot all about the Internet. I've been feeling that this has become more of a Sunday question. I'll post my games later tonight. Good times!
Haha, even though I may not post as much as I used to since I've been a little busier than normal, I still check into these threads

(And that's probably why I haven't gotten back to Yuterald yet and I keep forgetting to--really sorry if you read this, Yuterald. When I actually get time and am not marking/studying/etc. I will get back to you... and if I don't, shoot me a PM because sometimes I forget.).

I was totally wondering where this week's thread was, but I think it really is better as a Sunday thread vs a Friday thread.

Oh, yes, I'd talked about a mystery game before, but the mystery game is:

Animal Crossing: New Leaf

hni_0051basaw.jpg

So, Animal Crossing: New Leaf isn't a game that I typically play. I don't invest a lot in simulation games because I usually figure they're not for me. There typically isn't really much in terms of an endgoal and the last time I'd played Animal Crossing on GameCube, I just found it kind of repetitive and there wasn't much for me to keep playing it. But New Leaf--aside from its neat presentation, neat NPC cues, plethora of furniture, multiplayer stuff, etc.--actually feels kind of RPG-esque to me. Bells act as experience. Catching fish, bugs, etc. feels like something to do for experience. The game doesn't really force you to put your town together, catch fish/bugs, dig up fossils, etc, so you can play at your own pace. Two months later, I still haven't really paid off my house, nor have I progressed my town a ton. Honestly, most of the fun I've had is engaging in collecting fossils, exchanging items with other players via multiplayer, exploring other people's towns, getting streetpasses, collecting furniture, etc. Filling out my in-game encyclopedia is pretty fun, and it's so much better that this stuff isn't relegated to in-game purchases otherwise it would take away from the replayability of the game or it would just make the game kind of lacklustre. It'd take away from the thrill of the game.

But damn, I love multiplayer. I like the people I'm playing with. They're the ones who kind of peer-pressured me into getting the game because they wouldn't shut up about it, and I'm kind of glad I got it in the end.

Granted, I never played the DS or Wii ones, so perhaps I might be highlighting stuff that were previously in those, but I'm having a blast with this one. I'm still playing the game a few months after I bought it as a way to relax, and I'm still happy with it.

I've also been playing...

Pokémon X (3DS)

1377068890486tmjnr.gif

Another game I got because I succumbed to peer pressure. I didn't like Pokemon White very much, so I didn't bother with BW2. The games are kind of like DQ without the narrative, multiple party members (even if some battles require you to keep multiple characters out at one time), etc. A lot that goes into Pokemon is stats, skills, passives, natures, etc., though, so that's where the depth really is.

Pokémon X completely respects the player's time. It starts you off quickly, it gives you access to online quickly, it's paced very well, it allows you to level up as quickly as you want via EXP Share, it allows you to find Pokémon of various types very quickly in early-game in order to gain an advantage early on (even if you get Torchic via download). I absolutely adore how the game looks, and I adore the animations. Essentially, I feel like it's a Level 5 game without the mechanics of a Level 5 game (this is a good thing), and that's probably because of its general look. There's also a lot of shit to do, and it's really quick to do it.

My favourite camera angle in battle is when the camera zooms in/out on the participating Pokémon. It cracks me up every single time. Especially when the Pokémon looks dumb.

I'm enjoying it so far. It's everything I wanted Pokemon White to be. Heck, it's everything I wanted a certain Level 5 RPG with monster-rearing elements that came out this year to be that I ended up really disliking.

I wish with you could take screenshots.

I have to admit that I haven't had a lot of time to get through this game lately. I haven't gotten very far, but I will say that I like the battle system tweaks like removing the grid entirely. It does feel like it's... Persona-esque, though. You social link (or have to make your relationships with other characters better), answer questions in-class, choose clubs, etc. There's one character in the game who I still don't like despite hearing that she gets better. But... hm. I'm sure it gets better.

Also the soundtrack kicks ass. So freaking good.

Sweet Home (Famicom)

74252-sweet-home-nes-c1ymt.png

Sweet Home is known as the Famicom horror RPG that ended up spawning the survival horror genre and inspiring Resident Evil. How apt to start it in October, then. There has been quite a bit of horror RPGs developed by indie devs, but I still like games like Sweet Home and the original Shadow Hearts are among the best in the horror RPG genre. Sweet Home has random encounters, but what's neat about it is that while you have three members to a party, you can use the Call command to ask the other party to come to assist you (but they do have to trek there to help you) and then you fight together. Errors in investigation/battling can lead to permanent death for some characters. This is important because characters have their own item that they use. So one character uses a lighter, one character uses a health kit, one character uses a camera, and so on. If one character dies, you no longer have access to that item and must find a substitute item to put in your inventory. This creates tension in the game, along with the game's gruesome cutscenes and gross stuff.

The original Resident Evil was intended to be a remake of Sweet Home, but it became its own thing. Either way, it took a lot of elements from Sweet Home (using the notes for storytelling, multiple endings, etc.).

The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD (Wii U)

gfa2l.jpg

I'll get it out of the way. I don't particularly like how the game's backgrounds/lighting looks, but it's The Wind Waker. The Wind Waker has excellent animations and presentation, but certainly, the dungeons and game structure does leave a little to be desired. Taking screens is neat, it's just too bad you can't save the darn things to the Wii U's hard drive and must post them on Miiverse to save them for sure.

What do all these games have in common? They're games I can probably play in bed or outside. And for the most part, that's what I have time for now. (And it's been getting cold and I don't feel like putting sheets on my chair in order to feel warm in order to stream some games or to play stuff for an extended period of time sitting down.)

Other stuff I've been playing lately:

I sometimes stream Final Fantasy VII for a few friends, but I haven't been able to do so lately due to not really having the time to do it. I really should get back to that. I'd recently completed Mario and Luigi: Dream Team, which I didn't like very much. I talked a bit about it on my Twitter and a few threads on GAF, and explained why I didn't take very well to it (basically boils down to the game completely overstaying its welcome, some of the gyro being weird, and some bosses having too much HP + one Giant Luigi battle freezing on me...though I never thought the tutorials were bad at all).

I started Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory a few months ago, and I should get back to that, too. Next week, I plan to go ahead in Puppeteer alongside another GAF member, so that should be fun.

Playing Killer 7 for the first time. Really enjoying it so far, although the voice acting/dialogue does sound cheesy some of the time to me. I'm currently facing the third boss, and it's a bit frustrating to me, probably because I'm just horrible at aiming.

I picked up Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate again today after a small hiatus. Not very far in that either, but I'm liking it. It's easy to lose track of time while playing it. My only complaint so far is that playing it without a Circle Pad Pro makes the swimming kind of difficult.

The past 4 days have been an amazing amount of Infamous. Wrapped Infamous 2, had so much fun I went back for my evil playthrough of the original, got the platinum, and now I'm doing a second playthrough of Infamous 2 again. The first time I played the original it didn't quite click the way it has lately. I might have to download Festival of Blood to keep the fun going.

Basically nothing... Spending to much time trying to find the perfect game, kinda hoping TESO will be good, but who knows : P

GTA V. I have three mainline missions left to complete.

I loved GTA 3, but only completed 25% of 4. So was not sure how I would dind this games, but it had blown me away. I love the scale of the game and interchanging between players is fun. I feel like there is enough in this game to really keep me hooked for a while. I might also give 4 a try again next.

Huge Dark Souls fan overwhelmed by the Dark Souls 2 hype after playing the beta, decided to download Demon's Souls off PSN and play it for the first time, been having a fantastic time.

Beyond: Two Souls - (PS3) - Think I am getting somewhat close to the end and I really like it so far. Just about every little vignette has been enjoyable. Not sure if the overall story will come together well, but at this point I don't think I really care. Its been a fun ride.

Silent Hill: Book of Memories - (Vita) - Thought October would be a good time to finally give this game a go. Only a couple of levels in so far, but it had been more enjoyable than I expected.

RAGE - (PC) - A few hours in and I enjoyed it quite a bit at the start. But now the missions are starting to feel really repetitive. Game looks fantastic at times and the world seems so detailed and open. But when you poke at it a bit, you're really boxed in and the textures look bad up close.

rain - (PS3) - Finished this up last night. Good for what it was, a short relaxing play.
Fuck that Unknown bastard.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons - (PS3) - Completed this early in the week. Really heartfelt and enjoyable journey. Felt like playing a new Lord of the Rings book at times. really loving the smaller/shorter games like this and rain.

Resident Evil 5

I finally finished GTA4+TLaD&TBoGT so I decided to play something a little more appropriate for October. This is my first time playing through without a co-op partner and babysitting Sheva is kind of a pain.

I found RE5 boring and unsatisfying. The only redeeming quality was playing with my friend, in which we were able to create our own amusement and funny moments. Otherwise, what a boring mess.

Bronetta

Ask me about the moon landing or the temperature at which jet fuel burns. You may be surprised at what you learn.
Pokemon Y - Over 30 hours in with 6 badges. Taking a little break from it to avoid burning out.

Splinter Cell: Blacklist - Started it last night and went through the first two missions doing all stealth without a single kill. Split screen co-op is a blast with friends. Too bad it flopped.

Batman: Arkham Asylum and Arkham City - just actually finished Asylum today, gonna see if I can squeeze out City before Origins drops.

The Stanley Parable - so goood

Pokemon Y - never seem to make enough time for it. Only past 2 gym leaders at 10 and a half hours or so.

Witcher 2 - Beat it yesterday and I was surprised how well it ran on my PC
BF 3 - After playing the BF 4 beta it feels weird going back but its still a lot of fun
Remember Me - I really like the whole idea/concept of the story. The environments look amazing I just wish I could walk around and explore them

I recently beat Persona 3 and 4 then moved on to GTA5 and Pokemon Y and now that i have beaten those two i moved on to Tomb Raider (bought it recently on steam sale).

Pokemon Y

I beat the game and never found the Cut HM. I also beat it using just Kalos pokemon. I've put in so many hours into this game over the past week that I would have qualified for overtime at a real job. It was better than I expected it to be, but it is missing some features that I enjoyed from previous generations. The game feels both long and short. I'm now in the post game and I've learned to stop doing online battles with every guy who mystery trades me a weedle. For some reason they have ridiculously over leveled pokemon that just wipe me out.

The motto to this game should be, 'It gets better." I was really enjoying the game by the end. I had trouble getting into it at the start due to the stale combat and the hardly usable time altering device. The game becomes so much more fun when you start getting charges back for killing enemies and then unlimited charges. I also learned that everything needs to be statused. Who needs cover when I can just slow down the pocket of time in front of me? I've been playing this game off and on for a month now and I'm glad it's over. It was frustrating that getting each ending involved long unskippable cutscenes.

Dead Space 3

I don't know if I talked about this last time. This game has an incredibly strong start. I read the prequel comic from the library and it lead perfectly into the new game. I won't go as far as to say it's required reading, but it put all the background out there better than the animation before Dead Space 2. My only issue is that my 360 controller crapped out on me a while a go and the detection on the PS3 controller is hit or miss. Sometimes it will get everything synced, but in my last play session it didn't work and I was stranded in outer space.

The co-op AI is a complete liability. I'm playing on veteran and all Sheva has been is a pack mule for my herbs. The AI would have been better off with infinite ammo, I feel.

GTA 5: I've been cleaning up in the single player, working towards the 100% achievement. Tried a bit of the multi but I've been busy so need to jump back into that.

Pokemon: Loving it so far, but holy shit does it take forever to get to the 2nd gym. I'm on the road to the town with it, but my team is pushing the level barrier (my Pidgey has already started ignoring me, little shit), so I need to get there now.

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines: I was playing this slowly over the last few months, and for this October I resolved to finish it. On Friday and Saturday nights I turned off the lights, poured some vodka and went crazy, finishing it last night. Really a great game, but the combat is severely outdated. Story and dialogue were well worth it though, very entertaining.

I was just really glad that they checkpointed it decently, so you just choose "continue" and you're right at the end to see the other endings. I agree with you though, it becomes a lot of fun once you get decent powers.

I feel like I've been a good gamer lately. Starting games and seeing them through. Recently I've gone through:

GTA V - absolutely loved it. Still start it up every now and then just to drive around some.

Mega Man X - one of my favorite games growing up and it's still great. Maybe not quite as challenging as I would like now, but still fun to play through.

Final Fantasy VI - one of the best games of all time IMO. This was the first time I tried out the Wind God Gau build which wasn't all that fun to be honest. Will probably never do that again.

Playing through FFVI made me realize just how much I like old school FF. Therefore I started up FFVII as soon as I got to the THE END screen on VI. Over the years my love for this game has faded but replaying it now I have no idea why. It really is fantastic aside from there being a little too much focus on cut scenes/story. After VII will be VIII - the only FF I only beat once... let's hope I like it better this time :)

Mario & Luigi Dream Team - no idea why but I started Hard mode to check on the difficulty but just kept playing. Only the Giant Boss rush left to do on Normal but it's way too hard, doubt I will ever do it.

Guacamelee Gold Edition - finished my replay (101% on Hard mode, all gold medals on the challenges). Done.

Just beat AC3 for the second time (on Xbox this time) still a really fun game and doesn't deserve all the hate imo

Diablo 3 Xbox: Another great game I'm actually enjoying it more than GTAV

Splinter Cell: Blacklist - aw man I really wish I could play some couch co-op with someone (stares off into the distance)

GTAV- struggling to finish this, hopefully this last heist is actually the end of the game

BattleBlock Theatre - having fun with this bad boy

Fun game, good narration, shorter than expected. Right now I'm not sure what to play next. Days are getting shorter and Halloween is coming, I might dig some horror game from the Backlog and get into the spirit of said holiday.

In Norfair on Super Metroid and hopelessly lost. And just started spelunking my way down The Cave, with the Time Traveler, the Knight, and the Hillbilly. Really like it so far.
