‘Rogue One' Narrowly Beats ‘Hidden Figures' to Win Weekend

Disney-Lucasfilm's "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" edged "Hidden Figures" in the race for the top spot at the North American box office with an estimated $22 million at 4,175 locations, estimates showed Sunday.

"Hidden Figures," a comedy-drama about pioneering African-American women in the early days of the American space program, trailed by only $200,000 with $21.8 million at 2,471 sites. So the positions could reverse when final figures for weekend are released Monday.

It was the fourth consecutive weekend victory for "Rogue One," which has lifted its domestic total to $477.3 million. The eighth "Star Wars" movie is now the eighth-largest domestic grosser of all time, trailing "Finding Dory" by less than $10 million.

"Rogue One" also launched in China with $31 million in its first weekend, pushing the international total to $437 million. Its worldwide box office has hit $914.4 million in less than a month.

Illumination-Universal's "Sing" was headed for a close third with $19.6 million at 3,955 sites. Sony's opening of "Underworld: Blood Wars" is looking at a fourth-place finish with $13.1 million at 3,070 locations, followed by Lionsgate's expansion of awards contender "La La Land" with $10 million at 1,515 venues.

"Hidden Figures" is performing far above recent forecasts, which had ranged between $16 million and $18 million. Taraji P. Henson stars as Katherine Johnson, an African-American mathematician who, along with her colleagues Dorothy Vaughan (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson (Janelle Monae), helps launch astronaut John Glenn into space.

The awards-season contender has a modest $25 million budget. Spencer is up for a Golden Globe in the supporting actress category on Sunday.

More to come...

Still to this day I never got the appeal of the underworld franchise, and given that vampire craze has long since dropped off I think most people are wondering the same.

Is Assassin's Creed doing well overseas?
$50 million foreign gross, currently. It still has places to open, but I can see it not even hitting $100 million total foreign gross.

I'm disappointed that "A Monster Bombs" wasn't part of the title. A Monster Calls and Underworld had similar budgets (AMC was higher), but A Monster Calls is looking at $2 million for the opening weekend.

Is Fantastic Beast considered a success? 200 million seems far lower than what I expected it to come in at.

Oh cool, Taraji was able to parlay her success on Empire to a nice opening for Hidden Figures. That's really encouraging.

Well, it is in half as many theaters. The per screen average is pretty low, though, so I'll give you that much.

Taraji has always done well at the box office, she just doesn't get as many opportunities as a lead.

Nobody should be surprised at the success of Hidden Figures opening.

Revving into eight new markets, Monster Trucks added $5.6m from its ten markets for an early $9.3m.

The family outing enjoyed its best openings in Russia with $2.5m and Mexico with $1.2m, and arrives in Australia next weekend, followed by Germany on January 26 and Brazil on February 23.

Hidden Figures was a real delight. It's rare that a movie can be such a crowd-pleaser, but also deliver the goods on a great, interesting, and deserving story. It really reminded me of the live action movies Disney used to make in the 80s and 90s.

Very glad to see it's doing well.

I'm pretty sure the appeal is Kate Beckinsale in skin tight clothing.

Well, I'm surprised simply because this thread's title is literally the first time I've heard of the film. Somehow their marketing missed me completely, even though this film definitely interests me.

I'm happy it's doing well though!

Are you American? if not then I could see how you missed it, being I'm certain they expect to make most of their money domestically and any international gross will be bonus.

This is the second time a Disney animated movie gets its legs cut out by an Illumination one, Disney to start programming its animated tentpoles around Illumination's ones? :P

What the fuck?

Check out the Pirates movies' budget, you're in for a shock.

Just push Cars 3 back to the second or third week of July to cut out Despicable Me 3's legs.
