Xenoblade has always been anime as fuck, but at least the artstyle is tolerable this time. Yeah, it's "annnimmmeeee" as hell, but I guess I'm used to it after playing Tales games for years. Some of the character designs in XCX were painful to look at.

The character designs in XCX were fine, some were good even, it was the models that looked bad.

The Models seem a lot better now, but look at main character, that is baddong.

She's getting censored in the West, isn't she?

Less like censoring and more like being put into actual clothes. Ashley Riot may be able to pull off assless pants, but I think even he would consider this to be a bit much. The good news is that's only concept art, so there's a fair chance it will get fixed or already has been.

Seeing it in motion i still don't know what the main is wearing. Is that the same running animation from the first game?

I wish people would say what they mean instead of just calling things "anime" or "weeaboo". No anime isn't just the stuff you don't like.

It's something I never understood either.

Even the very first Xenogears art style was heavily tropey to an extent. Right down to the Anime cutscene all littered throughout the game. As well as designs such as Emeralda, and Chu-Chu which basically the precursor to the Nopon in the Xenoblade titles.

I don't need to even get into tropes of Xenosaga either since it's up in your face at times.

You would think some folks familiar with Monolith Soft's previous works would know what to expect by now in terms of Japanese influenced art direction.

Any battle system confirmation for this game yet? I know the rumors claimed it would be the same as the Wii and Wii U games but the trailer literally shows nothing.

I eagerly await the thread telling us how the game is ruined because the artists vision (of butt cheeks) was destroyed by censorship and thus any value in the game is gone.

And also for it to be the biggest thread related to the game prior to the OT.

The character designs look very close to the ones in Star Ocean 5. The faces aren't bad, but extremely generic. The clothes though... hoo boy.

Both scene isn't inherently bad, but it does make the whole thing sound more like a generic tales-jrpg. Original Xenoblade if nothing else, felt unique. So I'm worried about this one. If you told me it's Star Ocean 6 or Tales of Monadia, I would absolutely believe it.

We should be holding Xenoblade character models to a gnoddab standard.

Xenoblade 2 is what Tales wishes it could be. Look at the shot of the environment in the trailer. No Tales game can pull that off. The dramatic ending shot of the giant tree and the whale with Mitsuda's music is something Tales would never pull off, either.

That art piece and that diving mask... I hope we get some underwater environments. Would be interesting.

If they do take examples from Baten Kaitos / Granblue Fantasy and each island has it's own unique setting then that would certainly be cool as well but... I have to wonder if the game takes place in the sky for the most part or not.

I think the diving mask is because they live in the city in the sky we see in the trailer (Very skies of arcadia), and that they probably think the ground was toxic before the started their adventure? Pure speculations on my part..

Well, we dont know yet if this will have visible gear :p

Seeing as both Xenoblade and Xenoblade X had visible equipment, I don't think this is something that would be excluded.

If anything being a sequel to the first Xenoblade title, I'd expect revised and expanded mechanics over the first game, as well as a few sensible inclusions from X.

X's combat was a refinement of first Xenoblade game, so I wonder how they plan to expand it further in Xenoblade 2.

Also we haven't even seen the Doll design. That is if Xenoblade 2 has some form of mech at all, As opposed to the humanity vs. machines element that was a part of the original Xenoblade game.

I hope they fix the enemy pop-up and pop-up in general, though it was understandable due Wii U hardware and massive and detailed game as XCX.

That walled town looks kind of like a de-mechonized Colony 6, and the final shot/location reminds me of Bionis' knee, though the latter's definitely intentional.

I would say "Character designs at least translates better into 3D than XBX" but realised it was just Lin who looked creepy af.
But yeah, miss Xenoblade 1's designer :'(

Monkey paws wishes

It was effected a lot by it. Much of the character development is typical anime naval gazing "I must protect those I love/friends give me power", story is avenging a friend killed by opposing empire, mysterious man of ambiguous siding
that ends up being an extremely important entity
,
love interest gets turned into an android
, so on so fourth.

But the pacing was great and characters were kept grounded enough, perhaps. Melia in particular is unbelievably iron willed, and felt super bad for her.

I get what you mean regarding XB2's trailer literally having all the dialogue be every anime romance ever though. Yikes.

Oh no definitely, I meant the more "inherently bad" tropes. I mean Fiora ends up as a sexualized robot waifu, but she doesn't lose her personality, doesn't call Shulk "master", doesn't ask Shulk to "touch her special, most vulnerable robot part" and shit like that. Melia is a hundreds of years old teen-looking girl and yet this is never used for anything creepy and she's one of the most surprisingly mature characters in the game (while still acting like a young girl). There's even a romance triangle that's handled very well.

So yeah what I meant is that Xenoblade used stuff that generally ruins a lot of media without turning into a shitty pandering product, almost like they were making some sort of deconstruction... Except now the sequel will have a more generic anime art style, sword waifus, and even some ass. Sigh.

This kinda counter argument really annoys me. Look, the first Xenoblade was anime-inspired, but so was Cowboy Bebop, or Ghost in the Shell, or Princess Mononoke. There's good anime design, and bad anime design, and those in between. Xenoblade was somewhere in between to good, Xenoblade 2's are flat out garbage tier.

Okay garbage may be too harsh, I've seen much worse from NIS and Compile Hearts, but it's still really incredibly generic and coming from a first party production, it just is bad.
This!!! Such a shame.

I really wish they could have gone with a more experienced character designer vs one who started out drawing NSFW stuff on pixiv :/

Even ignoring his NSFW beginnings, his designs seem kind of... repetitive? I mean, the two girls shown off so far just look like retreads of his old designs. Red girl looks like his Fire Emblem Celica DLC art right down to the shorts and the two belts. Even the hair looks similar.

And as has been mentioned before, the blonde is basically Angela Balzac right down to the color scheme.

And given the possibility of them being linked to the sword's design, I don't know if we'll be able to freely change their gear around... Here's to hoping they tone it down a bit from the concept art. Go all out with the fanservice for the optional gear but don't force everyone into it with the default designs please :/ Yeah, yeah there's precedent with KOS-MOS but I was kind of hoping they were past that stage with Seven's default design being not so bad pandering-wise.

I'm pretty sure that's not a bath scene, just her in a pool of water - she's wearing a dress and the posture is more one of distress than anything. Bath scene trope annoys the bejesus out of me though.

On topic, the pants are absurd, but XC and XCX had more than their share of insane outfits you could choose from, so I'd presume the same is true here and you could easily be wearing something else.

As for character art - while I would have preferred an evolution/improvement on the XCX design, I'm fine with a more 'drawn' anime style if the designs are good.

I really abhor how the common anime character designs of today look. I dont know how to explain it but they look more "childish" than ever before. I didnt expect this game to have anything older than young adults but now youre basically a preschooler.

Still not buying the 2017 date, maybe for Japan in Nov/Dec. Everywhere else is going to be 2018.

The date is interesting because we're already getting Mario in holiday and probably that rumored Pokemon game (if there's any weight to that).

Hard to say how far into development they are. To me, it did seem pretty early but Reggie also seems to think that this is coming 2017 too (per some interview). I'm on the side of delay too but if it WAS to come 2017, where would it fit in that pipeline? September / October maybe?

Yeah, and wasn't Monolith helping with Breath of the Wild? Sure, they are probably done, but I'm sure that took some of the talent away from Xenoblade 2. 2017 just seems not feasible to me.

It's ok, would feel like a nice chance of pace from the mostly adult cast from Xenoblade X (I think the only young members from that game were Lin and Celica)

I don't get complaining about heavily anime influenced designs from a Japanese studio

Not that people can't have a preference or not like these designs but this is a very Japanese game so why can't it adhere to Japanese pop culture aesthetics? Maybe I'm overthinking it. Would the equivalent criticism for western games be getting upset over bald space marines?

So since everyone is assuming the girls will turn into weapons, yet are upset about bath scenes, why not just have both? It's a nice chemical bath to scour off all the filth and monsterorgans left on them from hours upon hours of being slammed against evil horse jaws and squid brains. The one girl-weapon is simply admiring the craftsmanship of the other :)

The characters and story so far look like a new low for the series. This is some seriously trite shit. It looks like one of those games I come across on PSN from time to time and can never remember the names of. Or a Tales game. And I despise the Tales series. I just have to keep reminding myself that at least this will play better than a Tales game. But the disappointment is still there. *sigh* It looks like another example of a developer taking criticism way too seriously instead of just doing what they want. Which is really depressing, since Monolith is usually one of the bold, braver developers out there.
