Previous Souls games felt like players were the lone actor in a play designed just for them. Enemies didn't move until you were close. Upon entering a room, everything was deadly still until you disturbed it. The world felt static, largely by design. Bloodborne turns this notion on its head. When you die in Bloodborne, as with previous Souls games, all of the enemies repopulate. But while the world is mostly the same every time you spawn back in, enemies are mobile, roaming around the environment and forcing you to change strategies in real-time.

So awesome to hear. Miyazaki has done it again!

How spoiler-y is this?

I'd avoid the GT review till they have the text version up. The video review, just by virtue of having to be visual, shows you some stuff that might be better left for you to see on your own (and mind you it's not that they purposely spoiled things, but stuff like bosses you should probably see on your own).

Anyone making a Crow thread for Bloodborne ?

If you want the game to be brutally hard, you are in for a treat. It's that other part of the game he hasn't tried yet.

What do you mean?

Some of the reviews state what the reviewer thinks of the difficulty in comparison to the other games. Others in this thread have also stated that it is harder than DkS2.

Either way I don't get the reason to be nervous. Even if it is easier, it is a good game that is different to the games that came before and harder than most games available.

There are a ton of reviews with the opposite opinion going into detail linked in the OP. If you only want GAF impressions, here's one to start:

Thanks. I think it's easier for me to read critical reviews since they are rarer. And yeah, Im generally ignoring specifics of media reviews because I tend to rely on GAF much more.

I hope Im not sounding like Im trying to bring the thread down. I enjoy discussing the game critically, I still totally am amped for this like nothing else this gen, but Ddog seems to have written a good critical opinion here regarding invincibility frames and regain/aggressive playing, so it's easier for me to get attracted to his critique and dwell on it. At this point, Im just thinking that he's a much better player than me, despite him finding DaS to be have been difficult, like me.

RAD, this is how it's done

Its funny ,but BloodBorne is pretty much a direct retake on the conceptual roots of The Order.

The result is drastically different ,but one that I much prefer.

Both games are beautiful visually ,but BloodBorne allows you to truly exists in its world and not just look at it from a distance.

Amazing reviews! Only thing that has me a bit worried is the difficulty But maybe people are just getting more experienced playing soulslike games?

Forbes Bloodborne' Review: A Terrifyingly Brilliant Game

This is Part One of a review-in-progress. As such, no score will be assigned at this time.

But for now, I’m just happy that Miyazaki and From Software and Japan Studio and everyone else who had a part in this game have done such an incredible job. It’s challenging, fun, dripping with atmosphere, and the most horrifying game in this franchise yet. I will give it a score within a few days, but without MP and without playing to the bitter end, and without at least trying out NG+, I can’t give it a final score.

Ok, going to bed. I'll update OP in the morning. I'll also reorganize the scores in an order just for the heck of it.

I know Bloodborne was hyped, but was this kind of reception totally expected?

Pretty much, yeah.

The other Souls games scored 89. 89 and 91 on PS3.

Most people expected this to meet or exceed them in quality. Reviewers seem to think that it has. But then again, many Souls fans felt DS2 was the weakest and yet that's the highest rated overall. So metacritic isn't perfect.

I was way off. I was predicting very low 70 as an average for metacritic in general.

Was totally expecting it to get slammed due to the stigma of being too similar to the other games, or not being accessible to mainstream players or disappointing performance or what have you. It just seemed like this gen was going to be one where game reviews were going to be much harsher for the sake of it

Yeah I thought it would be lower due to the "sameness factor" that was present in DS2. It sounds like they have freshened it up enough which is great.

The chalice dungeons are also a bit of a game changer. Potentially it just adds so much to the package.

So what are these chalice dungeons? would someone be so kind and explain in detail. Are they like loot caves from Diablo?

So what's this secret mechanic that Game Trailers mentioned in their review?

I'm guessing beast mode.

Having watched the GT review, I would consider the person playing to be pretty bad at the game. If the average person plays like that then the game will be quite challenging. I'm sure at least some of the footage was capped purely for entertainment value and not quality of play, but that's my take on what I saw there.

Not trying to bring the thread down or anything. I'm enjoying the game. Just comparing it to Dark Souls and trying to provide some insight for others.

I've has most of my deaths in the beginning but that was mostly due to adjusting to the new combat system. The game is easier than Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2.

Have you beaten the entire game? If not, I'm taking your opinioin with a grain of salt.

I haven't had time to flip through all the reviews, but are any written from the perspective of someone who never played a Souls game? I'm curious to hear about it through the lens of someone like me who never touched the other three games.

The load times is seriously going to hurt my enjoyment of the game.
i think the fact that you dont have anything to read in the loading screen like Dark Souls, makes the wait in the loading screen seem to be taking forever, i guess the developer didnt want to gove spoilers out.

Even Demons Souls tended to have lengthy load times...20 seconds at most tho

You did good, blood. You did good.

I feel like a teenager again, haven't been this excited for a game for a very very long time. Alas, I must wait until Fri which is no big deal after waiting so long for the first truly amazing PS4 exclusive. My second retail purchase after Second Son and it looks like there will be a few more to come, though none as 100% sure I am to purchase like Bloodborne. I completely expected this game to knock it out of the park and it most certainly did.
