I'll link my review when I've played more of the game. Ubi didn't send us a code until yesterday and I'm not going to push a review just to get it out "on time". My early impressions are that it isn't a very good game.
As someone who liked ACIV (let's just call that a "10" on the AC scale for this sake) I would give ACS a 6-7. It's an average AC game that took the safest route to prodicing a game without many glitches. There's no MP, there's no co-op, just a bland single-player campaign in a drab environment with uninteresting characters. Anyone expecting a new product from the Ubi machine will be disappointed, but anyone who loves AC will probably enjoy this one since there isn't a whole lot that's changed.
I'm also planning on streaming the game tonight (sometime after TNF, ~9PM PST) and I'll post the link here when that goes live.

So, I'm watching the Giant Bomb Quick Look and this game looks pretty good. I like how they've changed up the weapon system so it's not just long/medium/short blades. The game looks gorgeous of course and the gameplay looks much more streamlined than AC:U. I'm legitimately excited to play this game now. Go figure.

I've been checked out of AC since 3, BF got lost in the generational transition and Unity, well, we know what happened there.
In some ways it's a shame that this seems to be the best AC in a long time, because the setting isn't doing it for me at all. It's less the location and more the time period. I grow less and less interested in AC as it moves closer to modern times. Still if it's good I may pick it up eventually.

The reviews have surprisingly put this game back on my radar, but there are two things keeping me from a purchase. The first is general franchise fatigue. I've played every Assassins game save for Unity. The other is general open world game fatigue. I'm finishing up MGSV before going back to Witch er 3 to finish it, and that's on the heals of 100 hours plus I put into finishing Dragon Age Inquisition. I think I need to play some smaller games to cleanse my palete before devoting another few months to another open world game, and I have zero tolerance for filler right now.
The only thing confunsing thing about the reviews are some saying the game breaks away from the franchise's moorings and conventions while others say it's still stuck in the past. Which one is it?

I thought it would be along the lines of Unity, but it is doing noticeably better so far, we will see if it holds.
It doesn't matter, Destiny The Taken King will be GOTY anyways

MGSV was goddamn incredible. As agree critics and a large majority. But I can see why it wouldn't gel with some people, and that's totally fair enough. Hyperbole is still hyperbole, though.
I've been following the game closely, but not that closely.
This is pretty gutting.

A lot of people were (and still are) expecting the main sites to become bored with the series and reflect that in scores .
The gameplay videos and previews for this gave no indication it was significantly different

It does a great job pulling in most of the side content to feel thematically like the main story and connected to it. But you still go about it in some of the same ways. Additionally the rope launcher changes your ability to act within the game world a tremendous amount but your still using it to assassinate and kill enemies.

Agreed. The fact that they review the game they got and if it is in fact enjoyable and not all the outside stuff is refreshing.

Yeah, the absence of sound about the multiplayer modes is... Silence!
It's easy to miss because they haven't mentioned it once.
Eurogamer cited this as a significant positive. No tacked on modes or gunk like the last few games in the series had an Unity epitomised.
Gamespot's praise of the story has me interested/cautious. If they're not bullshitting, that really would be a reason for me to pick this game up, but that's something I need to wait for GAF impressions on.
If I could put 60 hours into Mad Max with that game's story being as terrible as it is, I could do Syndicate if there's actually some narrative payoff.

CoD's been doing the same thing for even longer.
A lot of people here don't get what makes most of us fans of AC. I don't play the games hoping they reinvented the wheel. If anything, I enjoy playing them because they're the same year after year. The new setting and new mechanics are enough to keep me engaged. I wish people would stop telling me that they're not worth enjoying.

IMHO they are not. Its highly enjoyable and the interplay of the protagonists WITHOUT resorting to the 90210 antics you would or could expect is refreshing as hell. Its a cool interplay that reminds me a bit of Rogue without the world ending shenanigans.(I loved Rogue though). Its cool to have the larger narrative and the smaller one both be interesting.
As a note to everyone, while we've been mulling it for a while, we're now banning for complaining that different reviewers at the same site have different opinions.

Really bummed we have to wait an entire month for the PC version, despite the weird popular misconception it was by far the best version of Unity at launch and ran relatively well so they can obviously get a PC version out at launch.

I'm a little surprised it has as many positive reviews as it does. I wasn't even considering getting it for a while, but maybe I'll see if there are any Black Friday deals. Granted, I want to see how the game performs in the wild first.

Exactly! Unity reviewed decently but considered a bit low for the AC franchise.
No way this would score lower and be a critical bomba.

Unity was a big disappointment so it's nice to see that Syndicate is a big step up, especially with the narrative which was my biggest sticking point with Unity.

My copies arriving tomorrow and I'll be playing this weekend, cautiously optimistic.
My favorite part of AC is learning all the little historic details and finding something that is truly interesting to me, like after AC4 I went on a windjammer cruise with the family in the caribbean and we explored all the islands and just loved that entire historical period. I went to Italy 4-5 times after the AC2 series including my honeymoon and we spent 3 weeks at a cooking/language immersion class in Firenze/Florence, memories I'll cherish forever.
Not as much a fan of Victorian England but hopefully something new and interesting pops up.

That is so cool, I wish i could do that. The time periods of these games have a place in my heart as well, i just like how it's all tied together and you actually learn quite a lot about history from playing them.

Good. "I don't know how opinions work and I'm mad as hell about it" is pretty tired. It's always about the score, too. Like 1 in a million posts will actually look at the text, the arguments of a review, and work from there. Just scores and moneyhats. Tale as old as time.
At this point I'd probably buy the PC version if it was out right now but it's gonna be a lot busier, games-wise, in November. I'll have to see.

gameplay issues aside and stuff, unity's story is real bad.
starts interesting but kinda farts its way along until the end and just rips a big one.
As down as I am on AC and open-world checklist collectathons in general, I still picked up Unity and Black Flag super cheap on a sale a few weeks ago and found some minor entertainment in them.
If you want to play Unity for the story, though, nah.

I went back to play Unity again last month and honestly the lack of a day/night cycle was the thing that bugged me the most. When you're free roaming and you know that time will never change it just takes away one of the joys of exploration. I even found myself making up rules to shift time forward after a certain amount of missions.
That would only happen if the games visuals start getting worse enough to get overshadowed by the, sometimes, bland mechanics and glitches.
And... i hope the story is improved, still salty that they gutted the Modern Day segments after

I haven't played an AC game since revelations but I'm a sucker for games set in Victorian london and this wide range of reviews isn't super helpful. I also wonder how much MGSV has affected open world game expectations. If this game has the same boring static open world that every other AC game has I'm kinda not interested.
