What are your *Actual* hot takes regarding video games? I mean ACTUAL stuff that would get people riled up?

I don't quite believe the dudes that say the reason they make and play female characters is because they "would rather look at a girls ass than a dudes all day" as they say... If ya know what I mean 😏 😅👌

My rules of thumb of whether to play as male or female:

  • If I'm going to play by myself, and I care about the story and gameplay: Male
  • If I'm going to play by myself, only for the gameplay, couldn't care less about the story, and the character creator is good: Female
  • If I'm going to play it with buddies/online, and I care about the story: Male
  • If I'm going to play with buddies/online, and I don't care about the story at all: Cutest female ever, with giant tits and skimpy outfit.

Agree with you, but the part about the culture war. The only way to skip the culture war is just not to reference it, but if you go into any of those western publishers/game studios website you will see how "into it" they are, they have whole pages dedicated to it even before they have made a single game. So yeah, skipping the drama of culture wars is easy, just not be a politically-driven company.
It doesn’t 100% work that way. I’m talking about the teams who were already minding their own business, making a game and showcasing it at an event, and then suddenly Grummz or that one youtuber guy comes out with an unconfirmed take on it in order to do anti-marketing.

I can acknowledge that some devs and publishers stupidly post or say strong remarks on things involving culture wars, but at the same time you have to acknowledge that there are bad actors/grifters who have been known to start something from nothing with some games.

Not all, but some.

This one is good as well. I played through this slog of a game recently because people talked about the ending. The "twist" at the ending was something that already happened in the middle of the game and the only one surprised was the protagonist because he is a dumbass.
Well said.

Tekken 4 wasnt nearly as bad as people claim and 90% of all "issues" would've been resolved with beefier block pushback and looser BDc.

Armored Core 6 is inferior to OGs simply due to the fact that energy management took a backseat and youre no longer playing as the pilot, but are now the mech - in terms of input and feel. Two pillars of what made AC, thrown aside
What's the difference when it comes to playing as the mech or the pilot? :O

Triple A games are fucking boring and I will trade Last of Us 2 for Signalis any day of the week. BUT MUH GRAPHICS AND MOTION CAPPED HOLLYWOOD ACTORS
After the success of comic book movies suddenly in 2010s and onwards games were infiltrated with deranged Hollywood fart sniffers that wanted to make these "Cinematic Blockbusters"

Although I appreciate some of this as fun experiences (looking at you Sony), it would've been best if this stupid trend never took off.

I have never once played a game that threatened to unseat my political or moral beliefs. I think it's an imaginary problem, frankly, and I can't believe it gets as much whining around here as it does.

Because video games usually lack the nuance for manipulation, have generally clumsy narratives, have relatively brief windows of influence, and rely upon their audience's active agency to direct their progress (rather than passive absorption of a message), I can't envision the type of consumer whose values would be subverted by even prolonged exposure to this medium. And even if I granted that most games have this uniform, intensely driven agenda (which I don't for a second), the aforementioned barriers to inducement would mean only the frailest of ideological convictions would be unsettled in the first place.

Do you truly feel that this traces back to comic book movies, or did it trace even further back to the combo of MGS 2/3 to FFX to RE4 to Gears of War, etc.

I remember game devs were wanting to be taken as seriously as hollywood movies far before the MCU was a thing, and quite a few devs people consider legends today, spearheaded this movement.

The Cinematic Blockbuster games have been around since at least MGS2 in 01, or even earlier when Square tried to actually turn their cinematics into a blockbuster and nearly went bankrupt.

I don't see Gears of War/RE4 being part of this phenomenon, not till Gears5.

Overall now that I think about it, you're both right.
It just seems to me that it became more of a mainstream thing only at the tail-end on the 7th gen.

It’s because the building blocks all took place at the tail end of the Ps2/GC/Xbox gen and the beginning of the PS360 gen.

CoD, GTA, TLOU, etc. campaigns wouldn’t be what they are today without GTA Vice City, San Andreas, GTA4, or CoD 4, BO 1, MW2, or Uncharted 1, 2, 3 etc.

It was a mutual staircase and everyone was pushing each other on a cinematic level to rival hollywood and have the medium be seen as more than just toy-adjacent.

Games like Alan Wake 2 and Hellblade barely qualify as a video game.

Anyone who gets a hard on from these movie games where all you do is walk around and watch cutscenes just because the graphics are pretty is retarded.
Very hard agree. Alan Wake 2 was the biggest wank fest I’ve ever had the displeasure of playing. Tried so hard to be a Twin Peaks or, more to the point, a video game HIGHLY influenced by David Lynch that it actually turned me completely off. No one can replicate what the master did, either in films, tv or video games. Plus it was as boring as fuck. You wanna play something weird, creepy and brilliant all at the same time whilst getting as close to a David Lynch vibe as you possibly can? Play the 1st 4 Silent Hill games.

Sidequests in an RPG world should be:
- highly contextual by being in right place at right time (and therefore inherently missable / impossible to see all of them), otherwise it has little sense of discovery;
- should never show on check-off menus, or on map indicators;
Oh boy, you would love Tales of Vesperia's side quests...

Camping in shooters takes skill, the right load outs and patience.
This is one of the very few actual hot takes I've seen. If you made a thread with that as the title in, say, CoD's peak, it would have infuriated thousands.

Most other takes are mild at best or so ridiculously untrue that you just have to pity the poster's limited cognitive function.

Kojima hasn't made a good game since MGS3
Turn based Final Fantasy was better
Assassin's Creed has been stale since 2
Naughty Dog is only good at presentation and polish
Same for Blizzard
Achievements/trophies should be banned from videogames
95% of open-world games are garbage
95% of all games could be deleted from existence and nothing of value would be lost

And I kinda liked MGS4

The GameCube ia the worst Nintendo system that isn’t the Virtual Boy.

Everything about the hardware seems to be made on purpose to make cross-platform games a chore to even consider. The controller is anything but standard. The discs are low-capacity. The memory cards are measured in “blocks” instead of friggin’ regular megabytes, and the standard one can maybe allow you to save a bunch of first-party games specifically optimized for it. Plus, the GBA connection is hella expensive if you want to play with three friends, and the GBA SP’a redesign made it clumsier and possibly caused the SP to sacrifice the headphone jack to accommodate for GC connections.

The system brought zero innovation. There was no need for that controller in any game ever. The GC had the worse mainline Mario and Zelda games ever, and if TWW became somewhat tolerable with the remaster, Sunshine is an unsalvageable hot mess of bugs, broken collisions, lame tasks, and plain tedium. The GC got slightly better third-party support than the N64, but still not remotely enough. I swear, the system was a paperweight to me but for Soul Calibur 2 and Ikaruga before Metroid Prime and RE4 made it worth it.

Like i said, if you want a more "likely" assumption, assume the console makers start making form factor PCs. Would the console public move to those products made by their favored companies, or would they rather some other entity produces a console because they absolutely need their gaming device to be a console?

That’s an interesting question, one that die-hard console warriors wouldn’t dare to consider. Their very souls recoil at the mere thought of anything beyond a console. My prediction? They’d boycott Sony and Nintendo with such relentless fury that both companies, and the console warriors, would fade into obscurity right alongside each other. Why? As a PC gamer, I see no reason to stop building my own rigs or buying custom PCs from companies that have been perfecting the craft for years. If Nintendo or Sony were to release something truly groundbreaking, it would still be the equivalent of buying from Dell or Alienware, where post-purchase customization is a nightmare, if not outright impossible. So they won’t be selling shit to people who wouldn’t request being buried with their Switch or PS5 Pro in their will.

My biggest one, and I mean this, is that a sincere emotional attachment to a hardware manufacturer is a sign of mental retardation. I am kind of not joking. A person who feels that strongly cause of what name is slapped on the front of box has a touch of -tism.

I have not read a defense of hardware/console fanboyism that sounded rational and not a mental health issue of some sort.

If you put sniper rifles in a game ofcourse people are going to camp.
Running around like a headless chicken is unrealistic.
Tell that to Black Ops 6 players
I don't exaggerate: playing that game through November/December after release started giving me random heart palpitations and carpal tunnel for how fast you have to be to play it. I stopped for my health's sake. I'm not even old.

GTA games after San Andreas are boring, repetitive games and comically overrated. If you scratch the surface the only thing that remains is shitty missions of "drive there kill these guys" or "drive there follow that guy and kill him". I have no fucking idea why there's so much hype for this franchise anymore, the story is usually decent but the gameplay mechanics are antiquated and the maps, again if you scratch the surface, completely lifeless and cannot even compare with other actually good open world games like Zelda and Elden Ring.

I agree. I remember enjoying San Andreas genuinely and playing it only for the sake of fun. GTA IV and V I played only because friends bought it for the PS3 and borrowed the copy out of a mix of obligation/minor curiosity.

I remember V being more fun than IV; but I wouldn't call either memorable, and have yet to recommend them to anyone, ever.

What's the difference when it comes to playing as the mech or the pilot? :O
The effect of anticipation, weight, recoil, and cool down have on gameplay cadence and execution pattern..

IE, telling the mech to do somethig and feeling the response, versus immediate response, as if controlling a human character in any other 3rd person control scheme.

Increasing the cadence and responsiveness was part of the build progression and because it sat on a larger spectrum, you felt the influence of the builds more

Edit: Im not saying AC6 is shit, im just saying it consciously dismissed a unique cornerstone in favor of accessibility. Its still better than ACV....and we will always have the OGs.

Video games as pre 2000's kids knew them are long dead.
Like rock'n'roll it has become just a product to consume, and the magic will never come back.

I'm appreciating games that AREN'T open world more these days.
I've felt we've had way too many. Especially ones with the same formula.

I'm over games with the very standard/cliché anime art styles.
It's gotten to the point where we see SO many and the styles are all SO similar that you can't even distinguish them anymore. Why not try and focus on OTHER anime art styles? Like Robotech, Fist of the North Star, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Golgo 13, etc. Mullet Madjack is a good example of what I'm referring to. Not every character needs to have the same gigantic standard anime eyes, bright color hair, etc. I get there are fans, and I know anime is huge now, but come on man, lol.

I miss consoles having a ton of exclusives.
Some people say they don't want them, but I do. I grew up wanting all the systems because of all of their exclusives. I miss that want. Nowadays it almost doesn't even matter. Especially if it's for 1-5 exclusives per generation. I was gifted a PS5 and I'm BEYOND grateful for it, but TBH if that hadn't happened I probably wouldn't even buy one because I know that (especially now) in time everything is coming to PC. I can count on one hand the games I REALLY want for it. Then the Xbox seems pretty pointless if you have a PC. So, the only studio that's really carrying the whole exclusive thing is Nintendo. Even if their titles are hit or miss for me.

I wish the whole "culture war" thing would die off already.
Woke this, woke that, offensive this, offensive that, I hate it all. It feels like an infection that's plagued one of my favorite hobbies, and I absolutely hate it. All the stupid grifters (on all "sides") making money off of ludicrous posts, some not even factual, etc. I'm just tired of seeing it, and I'm tired of hearing about it. I just want to be excited about games, and good/great ones at that! If a game looks woke and you don't like it? Don't play it and don't pay attention to it. Give your attention to something else that's more your speed. Something offending you and you don't like it? Don't play it and don't pay attention to it. Give your attention to something else that's more your speed.

I want gory mature games.
As an 80's kid, the R/Mature rating would almost always come with expectations of insane gore. We had a period where a lot of games had gore. Gibs, destruction, etc. I feel like we see that less and less these days, which is really strange to me. Even on games that are rated "M". It makes you wonder how much of that is because studios want to tone down on violence, and how much of it is just, well, "developer laziness" so to speak.

A lot of games these days feel like they're missing something. Maybe they're lacking confidence? Or don't have enough people on the team that were passionate or loved it?
These days it feels like the only games made with passion are usually indie titles. Almost everything else feels lackluster in a way. So many new games from a popular IP, but the new game just doesn't feel as detailed, weighted, and loved as the original(s) from 15+ years ago. Is it tech related? Is it budget? What is it? Why does it keep happening? It just makes game development feel lazy in some cases. Especially when sequels should be adding MORE content, not taking expected game mechanics and details away.
I feel like most of these are very cold takes lmao

I agree with all of it

1.) More realistic gameplay and graphics do not necessarily mean a better game. Gameplay should be fun.
2.) Games today are not as fun as they were in the 1990’s/2000’s.
3.) Dreamcast/PS2 /Xbox /GameCube era sports games are by far the best generation of sports titles.
4.) Sports genre is STILL the most important genre in gaming, it just is not utilized well.
5.) The lack of sports video gaming with today’s youth is one reason viewership is dropping amount all leagues with young people.
6.) Arcade style experiences are still a better experience than Online play.
7.) Mario Odyssey while a more complete game, is not as GOOD OF a Game as Mario Galaxy.
8.) Halo peaked with Halo 2-3. And it is still better than most COD’s.
9.) GTA VI will NOT SELL AS WELL as GTA V, and it will bring about a collapse in AAA gaming.
10.) There hasn’t been a good wrestling game since Def Jam Vendetta or N64!
11.) FFVIIR would have sold better as a straight up RPG remake of the PS1 version with quality of life changes.
12.) BoTW is the best Zelda, but not ALL Zelda’s are good.
13.) Nintendo did not let the consumers down with Metroid, the consumers let Nintendo down with Metroid!
14.) Valve needs to be sold to MS
15.) Kingdom hearts has never been fun!
16.) Resident Evil needs a reboot and needs to coexist in the same world as Dead Rising and a future reboot of Lost Planet.
17.) If Sega had the ability to make more games, they STILL would be the second best developer of software to only Nintendo!
18.) Phantasy Star 1-3 crushes DQ 1-3 & FF 1-3!
19.) SFV was a disaster and SFVI looks uninspired. Maybe they should just remake SF II and SFIII?
20.) Wii was the best hardware ever made, but Dreamcast was damn good also!
21.) Kinect was excellent on Xbox 360, and MS abandoned it too soon with Xbone.
22.) Sony will announce older PlayStation titles for Switch 2 in 2025, and some titles will sell better on Nintendo consoles! Sackboy Adventures, Sly Cooper, etc.

1- What do you mean by 4. and 5.
2- 9. Very bold take. I don't think you realize how much the gaming population has grown between now and the last GTA installment.
3- 14. WHAT THE FUCK WHAT ARE YOU SMOKING
4- 16. ???? why? RE is beloved by most people right now, why would they pivot like that?
5- 18. I need to try phanntasy star, never played them myself.
6- 21. Thats just false. All gimmicks are just that; gimmicks. Even VR is a niche product even though it has seen tremendous success.
7- 22. Sounds very implausible, but hey with MS doing what they're doing they've permanently shaken up the status quo so who knows

I didn't like signalis but I agree with you. Modern AAA games are made for such a wide range of people that they end up appealing to no one but the most common denominator.

I'm not even sure that's a hot take. The SNES and Genesis libraries were far more distinctive than modern consoles. Each system getting its own version of a particular IP was and is cool as hell IMO.
I thought so also, but a lot of people (the sensitive types) cry about not getting everything these days.

But this is true: if my character is on screen (3rd person game) then they aren't "me" in any way. I feel absolutely zero identification with the character in 3rd person games -- I've always instead seen them as a puppet on strings that I manipulate. I actually find it psychologically bizarre that anyone identifies with the toy in front of them instead of seeing them as an action figure you manipulate by remote control.

And in that sense, I'd much rather manipulate & control a hot female puppet on screen than a male one.
