Rumor: Oblivion Remake Leak Suggests It's Taking Some Inspiration From Soulslikes

Not the latest news but didn't see folks bringing it up. It's crazy to think that an Elder Scrolls game needs to borrow soulslike elements.

The latest Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion leak suggests that the game may be taking some inspiration from Soulslike games. Rumors of an Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion remaster or remake have been swirling for years, though no official announcements have been made. While fans are still waiting for official news on the game, leaks have suggested that not only is it real, it's potentially launching later this year.

If the latest Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion remake leaks are to be believed, the game is being developed by Virtuos and will launch at some point in June 2025. Fans should take this information with a massive grain of salt, as no one from Bethesda or Microsoft has confirmed the news just yet, but in the meantime, another leak has potentially provided even more insight on the project.

Based on the report, it doesn't sound like the Oblivion remake is going to be a Soulslike, but rather, it's simply borrowing some ideas from combat systems commonly found in Soulslikes to offer a fresh experience for players. How this all works remains to be seen, but if the leaks about the Oblivion remake releasing in June 2025 are accurate, then fans should find out sooner rather than later.

The combat in Oblivion is as basic as it can possibly get, it's hard to believe they could make it worse.
It's built on trying to "actionify" morrowind combat.
While morrowind combat was true RPG - roll the dice with each swing. There was no skill involved.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
That is the most nothing-burger article I have ever read, lol.

Doesn't say anything other than the headline in a few different ways.

I don't think the remake is real but if it does end up being real, making the gameplay like dark souls or even super action packed like Devil May Cry, Stellar Blade, Wukong. Elder Scrolls should remain with a slower more immersive type of combat They could improve upon the animation of Skyrim but hopefully they don't change it to be super action packed like the games I mentioned above.

I will add the most relevant part from the article since it was skipped in the OP for some reason:

MP1st details how the Oblivion remake's blocking system is taking inspiration from Soulslike games, though further details on exactly how were not mentioned. Assuming the information is accurate to the version of the game that will supposedly launch later this year, fans can also expect upgrades to stealth, a more forgiving stamina system, a revamped HUD, hit reactions, and improved archery

And from the source that this article referenced:

“fully remade,” hinting at significant changes in this reimagining compared to the original game. Brief descriptions of six gameplay systems that will be reworked are also provided: Stamina, Sneak, Blocking, Archery, Hit Reaction, and HUD.

For the Blocking system, ideas to improve it were taken from Souls-like and “ACT” games (ACT is short for action game.), as the original system was considered too “boring” and “frustrating.” The Sneak icons are now highlighted in the improved Sneak system, and the damage calculation methods were reworked. The stamina system was modified to be less frustrating for the player, making the knockdown that occurs when stamina is depleted more difficult to activate through changes in calculation methods. The HUD was changed to make it easier to understand and more aesthetically appealing to young players. Hit reactions were also added to improve the response to damage inflicted on the player and NPCs. Finally, Archery was improved to make it more playable and modern in both third and first-person viewpoints.

Strangely I would be okay with this. Combat in Oblivion back then already wasn't super great, especially the lack of hit reactions.

"We are going to remake that thing you like, but we are going to change it so you don't like it. Be excited!"
Right ..

When are devs going to realize people want the exact same game we loved with MAYBE some quality of life fixes (sometimes they even go overboard with these)?

Bethesda has a home run with Oblivion as all they have to do is integrate mods (for console anyway) and improve the graphics.

They will find a way to mess it up though.

Nah, I don’t buy it.

The combat will remain be garbage like every previous BGS title so far.

Same for the progression ststem.

P.S. Maybe they just mean they’ll remove NPC scheduling.

What Souls games invented in terms of combat?? I can't remember anything.
It’s not always about what a game invented.
Sonetimes it’s more important what a game perfected.

The Souls series popularized a style of third person combat that borrowed the Zelda Z-targetting and married it with

- better aesthetic
- slower, more delirate and “ meaty” animations with a more satisfying sense of impact.
- a WAY better balanced and more satisfying difficulty curve.
-a competent progresssion system that even when pushed to its extremes wasn’t so easy to break.

But you fan of the Bethesda slop don’t need to worry, because it’s almost a guaranteed that this remake won’t achieve any of these goals.

this literally means nothing... it makes zero sense.
are they adding a dodge? that's not a "souls like" idea... a parry? also not a "souls like" idea.
it already has a stamina bar, as is customary in most Action RPGs as well... so that can't be it...

is Avowed "souls like" inspired because it has a dodge, stamina and a parry?
no, of course not, claiming that would be retarded as fuck...

so, I don't see any way to "borrow" an idea from Souls Likes for Oblivion's combat, as Souls Likes do not have any unique combat mechanics.

the trend of calling anything souls like that has a fucking sword and a dodge roll continues it seems 😑

The most boring trend of modern gaming.
"Soulslikes"
Stifling creativity with Fromsoft inspired tedium.
I'd rather go back to the endless Mario/Sonic clones of the 16bit era.
I'd rather play Zool and Bubsy the Bobcat with a terrible 3rd party controller than another game with Soulslike elements.
Fucking boring.

Oblivions combat was trash tier at best so any improvements to that would be a welcome change. That and overhauled visual fidelity that can stay faithful to the original with QoL changes and they'll do fine.

Not even Miyazaki himself wants to play an Oblivion Souls-like.
i mean, I would... If i had any confidence that these people could pull it off. Which I don't.

They don't know how to make good combat, they don't know how to make good itemization, they don't know how to make a good skill and progression system.
There's virtually zero chances that they would "nail" a Souls-like combat for this remake or any other project.

Good clickbait-friendly headline, I wouldn't expect miracles. Bethesda can't even introduce major new changes to their brand-new games.

My concern is the dev house. Like okay a good dev team for MGS3 remake, in asia, high standards of graphics, probably had some FOX developers move over from konami. They know there is little they can do to not remake this right.

But remaking a western game in an asian country ? An example of the reverse is the Demon Souls remake where the art was inconsistent from the source. This is even more rare. The WRPG elements of Oblivion is what made it so wonderous. It had this Fantasy Book cover art style.

I don't think a studio in Singapore can achieve that faithfully. Virtuos will have that chinese dev problem where there is no creativity in the work. And the creativity for this game western.
