Does anyone use a 55 inch OLED for a PC monitor? Tips on how not to go blind?

I've got a 55 inch LG oled and I was thinking of using it as a monitor if/ when I eventually get a gaming PC. Does anyone have this setup? Do you get headaches? Do you turn off HDR?

I have a 48-inch C4. 48 inches to use as a monitor is already ridiculously big, now 55 inches is insane. But if you use this TV from a good distance, anything is possible.

I only activate HDR when I'm going to watch a movie or play something that supports it, otherwise I leave it off.

I have my 55 inch OLED mounted on the wall and I have a desk in front of it. That way I can move the desk to where I feel it is the most comfortable viewing distance. I couldn't imaging the TV on the desk itself.

I think 55 inches is too big to use as a monitor. For gaming purposes, anyway. Not because of the size itself, but because of how close you are sitting to it.

Use as a ultrawide monitor 3440x1440p It ll blow your mind, its the only way to use a 55"tv as monitor, i've already tried.

That's insane.

The only way i could think about doing that is to wall mount it at eye level and have my desk about 4ft away...:messenger_grinning_smiling:

I use a 48 inch in ultrawide resolution, love it.
Wait, that's actually fucking genius. If I select 3440x1440p it'll show me an image with black bands on the top and bottom, correct? And the image itself will be a much more manageable size? This could be brilliant

This doesen't sound very comfortable unless the desk is a long way off.
I struggled to get used to 32" monitor on a armslength distanse (Love it now).
I change the chairs position a little bit when using controller, as I lay it a little bit back and put the armrests closer to my body and all the way up.
Works great with the Fractal Refine chair.

I use a 48" OLED for my gaming monitor. I got a floor stand for it and have it set up so it lines up with the back edge of my desk.

55" is freaking huge but it might still work out OK if you put it back from the desk a bit.

The stand I got is similar to this:

I depend on my 55 inch tv LG E5 for certain games, but my living room is my bedroom and I have my computer in the middle between my TV on a TV Stand and my PC monitor on a desk. I can Extend screen or Choose exclusive Second Screen options and play PC games on it, or have a youtube video playing. I got bad burn in after 8 Years of use. But it is not noticable during most play.

The TV can do 3d, ill probably keep it forever.

I did it on my TV the other day to see how it looks. I personally didn't like it. "I bought the whole TV, I want to use the whole TV". There's also the fact that at this resolution of 3440x1440p, the image will be blurry. You have to create another custom resolution to get it to scale properly. I don't know how this would behave in games.

I use a 55 LG G4 as a PC monitor as the OLED is massively better than any OLED monitor on the market. You do require it to be wall mounted or, as in my case, have a really deep desk.

part of the reason VR is so immersive is the display takes up your peripheral vision

big ass TVs can kind of do the same thing
sit as close as you comfortably can

if its too bright, put your room lights on a dimmer and find your sweet spot

LG CX 55" as a monitor and gaming tv. A sit like a foot away 😂 so have to look about to see everything.

Set scaling to 125% when running in 4K or its way to small.

I figured since it's 4k 120hz, with G sync and built in speakers, that I might use it instead of buying a monitor that would be really expensive with those same features

I considered the same thing, but the 48" or 42" OLED.

55" is huge though at arms length distance.

I think the "use ultrawide resolution" comment is spot on though if you're gonna use your TV. That's about 48" across.

If you have to move your head to see each corner of the screen, it's too big.

I have a 42 inch LG C2 and it's just about fine.

I have HDR on 24/7, full brightness including for productivity. Get a service remote to turn off dimming.

I have a 42" LG OLED and I strictly use it for gaming, and my other monitor for regular PC stuff.
42" is quite good and I would not go any larger if you sit up close. It's pretty damn near perfect.
55 inches is wild unless you can play with a controller and lean back. If you are trying to use it for productivity that sounds painful.

Sadly, no, my desk is directly beneath it. I might just get a second monitor, since I tried using my Mac mini with my TV just now and it blinded me.

Then you don't want something that large unless you have sight issues. I would recommend no bigger than a 48inch if you insist on huge, and that is really too big. you want something you can take in the whole screen comfortably and that is probably in the 30something inches range. I think I had 32" in my last job and that was pretty good.

I think you guys are all making good points. I'll just buy a 1440p 27 inch monitor and call it a day. Might have to settle for an IPS panel, though :/

You should ask for tips on how to not break your neck. That seems way too big to sit 2 feet in front of.

I use a 48 inch C1 as my monitor and find it just about perfect. I tried a 55 inch for a while but the pixel density was obviously softer and it was a bit too big for anything other than reclining back and playing with a controller.

Of course, there are still times when I recline and wish I had the 55 inch instead...

I have a 55" C9 OLED standing on a deep, hight adjustable desk, and to the desk I've mounted a tray that slides out with a mouse and kb, that way I have even more space between me and the TV/monitor. I have three programmed table heights: standing, desk (for work, FPS, RTS), and "consoles" the lowest of the three to sit back and play with a controller. I don't want a smaller screen infront of me anymore, in fact I am even considering a 65"...

This is how i use my 55 inch oled for my pc, full brightness and HDR. My desk is roughly 80cm deep and after 5 years still no headaches.

And this is my new build on my 98 inch TLC QLED

I just completed a new build and use my old LG 55" BX. However I'm fortunate enough to have a spare room wherr the tv stands with a couch 3 meters (roughly 10 feet) away. I wouldn't want to use it as a pc monitor up close though. Used to do that with a 42inch tv back in the days when making music, but for gaming I would always sit back furthet as close up its difficult to take in the full picture. If you're stil going to do it, maybe lower the oled brightness to reduce strain on your eyes. You could also try Hgig tone mapping to reduce overly vivid tones.

Yes, my 55" OLED (Samsung S95B) doubles as my PC monitor and also work from it, but it's situated so I'm sitting about 4-5 feet away from it. I also disable HDR and lower the brightness for anything non-gaming related. I wouldn't exactly recommend this kind of setup for productivity purposes, but it works for me.
