Nintendo Decided to Go From the Switch OLED to an LCD Screen for Switch 2 ‘After a Lot of Consideration’

So Nintendo being cheap..yet again

Mainly but TBF, with current tech an OLED screen with VRR is heavier on the battery and tends to have flickering issues at low framerates, which wouldn't look nice on the Switch 2 with many games locked to 30fps.

It will be interesting to see with the inevitable OLED refresh in 3yrs if they feel they have to sacrifice VRR, if screen tech hasn't improved in this regard.

OLED on mobile devices is not all that great. Due to power considerations, PWM is usually used for dimming the screen. PWM introduces flickering, which causes headache and eye strain for many people. I'd wager it's not healthy for anyone.

So LCD is a win IMO for a device you will look at for hours.

There are some proper GAF takes on here.

OLED isn't better in every way.

OLED
+ proper black and better dark colours
+ much better contrast
+ much higher max luminescence (great for HDR)
+ sub 1s response time
- expensive
- burn-in - particularly an issue for a console that will have UI showing
- general pixel degradation, so colour balance changes over time (blue OLEDs go first)
- harder to get panels that can be driven at high refresh rates (and an added cost on already expensive panels)
- look bad at low framerates
- if PWM is used, can make some people nauseous

LCD
+ cheap (even for high quality ones)
+ easy to get panels that can driven at high refresh rates
+ no burn-in risk
+ fast response time LCDs aren't hard or expensive to get (still cheaper than low resfresh rate capable OLEDs)
+ look better at slow framrates due to 'natural motion blur'
- no true blacks
- worse contrast
- much lower max luminescence (bad for HDR)
- slower response times

As for Nintendo 'shafting' us or the like to make more money... well, they are a business are they not? They legally exist to make money, not lose it.

And guess what they replaced it with in the second (and last) revision.

I've been rocking my OLED iPhone for 6-8 hours every day for two years. Not even the battery indicator or 5G logo have burned in yet. I've even tried looking for it on grey wallpaper.

But I don't how HDR capable the Switch 2 is, unless they added mini led.

Burn in on the Switch is literally impossible. ~7000 hours of a STATIC image. Ain't happening. That needs three things to occur:

1) Play the same game non-stop for that time
2) Game in question has a UI that's always on
3) Play at max brightness (most/all people don't)

and the kicker

4) Play the exact same game and nothing else for every single day, ~7 years straight, 3 hours a day, skipping no days.

So, if that sounds like you, then let me know. Because I've yet to hear of anyone who meets those conditions and doesn't have other games or have other systems (obviously having more systems means you can't spend as long on each one).

Isn't OLED more energy efficient than LCD?
Not at all, LCDs are generally more energy efficient in a straight forward comparison.
But the difference depends on the type of the backlight LCD is using and how it is using it.
What is more expensive to produce also depends on the backlight of the LCD panel.
Without knowing the answer to that we can't say which one is more expensive or has higher energy efficiency.

Calling out companies for bad consumer practices and overcharging customers is childish now according to fanboys of said company????

Even the smallest amount of logic and reason when it comes to the tech they’ve used, and the state of the world economy shuts down the Switch 2 critics.

For bright screens and especially when you try to make HDR viable you will get a higher power consumption and more expensive to manufacture LCD screen.

So, unless you are comparing a quite crappy low quality LCD, which on the other side you are praising as being anything but, I think we are borderline disingenuous to paint OLED as worse in terms of battery life and/or overall cost.

Asus made the same consideration on the ROG Ally Screen. It seems the theory is VRR makes screens more potent on handhelds than OLED without VRR.

OLED has a bit more issues with VRR than LCD does, it is known. Let’s hope that blacks on Switch 2 are decent (not as perfect as on Switch OLED, but hopefully close).

A lot of consideration my fucking arse. All of this just to release a Switch 2 with OLED screen down the line

Greedy cunts the lot of them.

Now there's a lot of advancements that have been made in LCD technology during development

There is literally one reason that it's not OLED and it's because they want to sell you an OLED version later. I would have preferred they launced with an OLED version costing $100 more but why do that when you can sell two.

Maybe you should apply that smallest logic and reason to yourself?
Why what cutting edge technology have they used? Is the screen mini-led? Is the CPU and GPU the latest and greatest?
By all accounts it's very similar to or slightly better than a PS4 with DLSS.
