Nintendo Decided to Go From the Switch OLED to an LCD Screen for Switch 2 ‘After a Lot of Consideration’

30fps games look like total shit on OLED, and since it's clear most of the current gen 3rd party ports will only be 30-40 frames, this is the right call for now. OLED needs a minimum of 40 hz for decent motion clarity, 30 is just headache inducing.

It does look like a high quality LCD:

Massive disappointment incoming if you expect this. The Ally X has a super-similar screen, people said it's a great LCD screen (1080p VRR, etc), and next to OLED it just crashes off a cliff.

Ally X doesn't have HDR, but it's been reported this is an edge-lit LCD screen, which is the worst kind for HDR.

If you don't give a shit about OLED in the first place, it's not going to bother you, but if you actually care about OLED for true blacks or HDR, it's going to be nothing like OLED.

Means there's basically no HDR at all. It's gonna look good in bright and colorful games like Mario kart but you don't need HDR for that.

True ...though 30 on Oled isn't as bad on these small handheld screens. They should've at least provided us the damn OPTION though. Since the screen can do 120hz, 40 fps would feel quite smooth on Oled handheld

Its a shame but hdr, 1080p and 120fps does take the sting away a bit.

Its not as big of a disappointment as, say, dealing with the forced kinect as an early xbox one adopter.

We all know that there will be an OLED switch 2 in about a year. Nintendo knows the fans will triple dip. Once for launch, once for OLED, once for special edition OLED.

Or they just could take a loss from the hardware like any other platformholder
Nintendo don't have a bunch of other big divisions outside of gaming to bring in the cash like Sony and MS do, gaming is their bread and butter, taking a loss on every console sold isn't as viable for them as it is for other larger companies.

For the double dip with the midgen refresh with OLED better battery and more storage, also corporate greed.
To be honest I'll probably double dip and upgrade when an OLED model releases. I'm definitely going to be part of the problem. I love playing games on the OLED switch.

It's not like they had a choice, it's already too expensive with a LCD panel, just imagine the outcry about the price if they would have used an OLED screen…

What sucks is now I can't trade in my Oled switch to both offset cost of Switch 2 AND not have to play games on multiple Switch consoles when I want to play one of the many shmups, pixel art games, and 2d games, or any game that tends to really shine on an oled. It's the 2d stuff that's colorful or games like Thousand Year Door, Octopath Traveller 2 that look so good on Oled. Ironically, large 3d games don't pop as much as I expected them to on Oled.

And ....battery life! Why couldn't they have done the right thing and offered an OLED model as an optional, more expensive Switch 2 for the people that wanted it?? We all know why it just pisses me off

I'm keeping my OLED Switch for similar reasons. There are a few games that I just don't want to play on any other screen. I would pay more for an OLED option on Switch 2. I like the OLED screen that much.

I still have my OG LCD Switch that I never play so I'll probably sell that or trade toward Switch 2.

Meanwhile Vita, released in 2011, had OLED. But yeah, keep bullshitting your customers, Nintendo.

Ayn Odin 2 Portal has OLED with 120 fps.
Steam Deck has OLED with HDR.
Retroid Pocket 5 has OLED.
My iPhone and iPad have OLED, both at 120 fps.
My TV is a 5 year old OLED, also 120fps.
Hell even my Switch has OLED.

But you telling us you had to do a "lot of consideration"? Go f yourself, it was probably like this:

Employee A: "hey boss, should we go OLED or LCD?"
Boss: "what's doing more profit?"
Employee A: "LCD."
Boss: "so why do you even ask?"

That's how long and intense your "consideration" was.

Oh and btw, your claim Switch 2 offers 120fps is just as worthless as Sonys 8k sticker on their OG PS5 boxes. MP4 runs at 60fps at best and I bet my ass in 2-3 years Switch 2's gonna be wheezing for air if it gets fed modern games. You jokes couldn't even optimize your own, in-house developed Pokemon Scarlet to run stable on Switch. Effing Pokemon we're talking about you miserable, greedy cunts!

switch 2 OLED could be in 2032 or something , the final revision model before the next nintendo successor

It's simple greedy Nintendo will want you to buy the Switch 2 Oled refresh down the line.
This is true colours Nintendo. Why rape our loyal fans once when we can repeat it usually three times a gen. The fans mostly love it.

Due to pure stinginess on the part of Nintendo and then selling the OLED version again to its fan base, it's ridiculous that the OLED Switch looks better than the Switch 2.
As an OLED supremacist, I think it actually looks pretty good. As long as the brightness is there I don't care.

There are some proper GAF takes on here.

OLED isn't better in every way.

OLED
+ proper black and better dark colours
+ much better contrast
+ much higher max luminescence (great for HDR)
+ sub 1s response time
- expensive
- burn-in - particularly an issue for a console that will have UI showing
- general pixel degradation, so colour balance changes over time (blue OLEDs go first)
- harder to get panels that can be driven at high refresh rates (and an added cost on already expensive panels)
- look bad at low framerates
- if PWM is used, can make some people nauseous

LCD
+ cheap (even for high quality ones)
+ easy to get panels that can driven at high refresh rates
+ no burn-in risk
+ fast response time LCDs aren't hard or expensive to get (still cheaper than low resfresh rate capable OLEDs)
+ look better at slow framrates due to 'natural motion blur'
- no true blacks
- worse contrast
- much lower max luminescence (bad for HDR)
- slower response times

As for Nintendo 'shafting' us or the like to make more money... well, they are a business are they not? They legally exist to make money, not lose it.

Meanwhile Vita, released in 2011, had OLED.
And guess what they replaced it with in the second (and last) revision.

I was just listening to the Digital Foundry take on the screen, and their impressions (or guesses since they haven't gone hands-on) were pretty positive. I'm excited about the VRR and HDR, if the panel is decent.

Color me cautiously optimistic.

that same john will sing "oled switch 2 is such a game changer" in about 2 years.
dude is a fanboy

I'm more than fine with not having to worry about burn-in on the screen that's permanently attached to the system.

People are and will argue that isn't an issue on modern OLEDs.

But it absolutely is. It has gotten better, as has management of it. However, part of that management is degrading the entire display to even out the wear, resulting in lower maximum brightness and therefore worse HDR.

And with it being a gaming console, UI burn-in is far more likely.

I have a Steamdeck OLED and I'm paranoid of getting something burned into the display. To be honest, I'm glad that the Switch 2 has an LCD Display. And it seems to have a great quality.
Sucks for ppl that want OLED, but it will come in a few years.

no one talks about the massive screen. that's a big bonus. Might convert me to playing handheld.

Of course if you only play on tv ....it's a waste lol.

That screen looks pretty good honestly, it does look like they put some quality material here. I was certainly not expecting 120fps and HDR. I never use my Switch 1 undocked, but in this case, I will most certainly give table top a few tries.

I get the feeling it's probably just a scummy tactic they developed to resell hardware to people. See the DSi -> DSi XL, and the 3DS -> 3DS XL

Make hardware, sell it, refresh it with a larger/better screen, and then sell it to the same people a second time.

No doubt in the S2's case there is probably at some level also a truth to price concerns, but I'm sure in 4-5 years those concerns suddenly won't be concerning after having cheapened production on the console.

They should compare similar scenes on both. Big strength of OLED is constraint and black levels. This video shows Switch 2 in its ideal scenario, but expected it is an influencer trying to push the change as a positive.

Jeez. You guys sound so entitled. It's a mass market machine - not a bespoke Ferrari.

You don't have to buy the OLED refresh when it comes out.
