Gamestop starts selling Steam vouchers

I get those for filling out online surveys, and you can buy anything in the store with them, so yes. This will be awesome

Confirmation. Great. Although I'm gonna be honest, I'd prefer not to even have to step foot into the store (last time I did was to get a launch PS3 to flip on ebay for 2000 dollars). So hopefully it can be done online too.

If that was your thought process I'd really have to wonder why you even got that game at $60. Maybe you got over excited only for the game to be disappointing? That and exclusive titles are the only angles that really make sense to me, most of those games I wait on Steam sales for in the first place.

I'm pretty much a PS3/PC guy so on occasion, I'll buy something like a Vanquish where I just really prefer playing it on PS3 so then.....

I imagine something like that. This process introduces further liquidity into our gaming budgets, perhaps allowing us to take more chances on full price day one games. We can buy a $60 console game confident that if it turns out bad it can be flipped at GameStop and that credit used to buy Steam monies, which goes quite far.

^basically that. It also makes it way more tempting to trade in my stash of console games during the Summer/Winter sales.

even though I already own 95% of what I want on Steam

bet your be able to find these at walgreens, and other stores like you do psn/xbl cards. good move. Can't wait for discount cards to appear on ebay.

Why are so many people happy about this? o_O

Accumulated reward zone points can go towards steam vouchers possibly. I have 8,000 points saved right now. Would love a couple of $5 vouchers towards steam so I can check out some indie games I haven't played yet.

This. I have some store credit there I'd like to get rid of, preferably on Steam as I see no console games I'm really interested in.

It's good news to me since I have been grudgingly switched from Credit Card to Paypal for Steam purchase ever since Steam customer info was leaked.

Yeah, fuck gamestop. I paid for a digital download 360 point card this morning but never got a confirmation email or the code. Called them up and they already charged my card and can't cancel the transaction and told me I have to wait until at least 5pm due to system maintenance. What a crock of shit. I'm never going to order anything digitally from them again.

I want this in the Uk, but considering how antii-steam GAME is I suspect this may never happen soon.

Well, Gamestop was Anti-Steam too! With Impluse Gamestop even owns a direct competitor to Steam -- apparently that doesn't prevent them from selling vouchers somehow.

I'd love to hear the story behind the Steam vouchers. Has Gamestop realized that Impulse is a lost case and won't be able to "win" against Steam? Or is Gamestop just ignoring that they are supporting its own competitor, because there's some nice money to be made?

Oh hell yeah. No adding credit cards to my Steam account? Sign me the fuck up. I may actually get into PC gaming if this dovetails into GoG as well.

Good, this needed to happen.

Been saying it for years. Now if kids can get their parents to buy them a "gaming PC" Steam totally will stomp all over XBL and PSN.

Maybe they're trying to be on good terms with Valve in case all of the anti-used game rumors are true.

I don't know if it's either smart or stupid; with the newest AAA PC games released at $60 price now, you have to buy $70 worth of vouchers ($50 and $20), thus leaving $10 in your Steam wallet, taunting you to spend it on a daily deal impulse buy.

So, they're pulling a PSN/XBL money card deal then?
Okay, not exactly PSN if you're in a digital sales-tax exempt state.

Why don't you just buy 3 $20 vouchers then?

I made the same math mistake in my previous comment before quickly editing it, hoping no one would spot my failure

True, but after their recent troubles I wonder if GAME are in a position to be anti-anything games related right now.

I hope they get released over here and stocked somewhere anyway - maybe Tesco will stock them, they have a lot of gift cards for other companies.

On a side note, now people will be able to sell their console games to Gamestop and ask Steam vouchers as payment.
I wonder if this will increase Steam popularity on the long term.

Impulse started to sell a lot of Steamworks games too some month ago.
I guess now they decided that it was pointless trying to complete directly and it's far more profitable trying to be some sort of alternative "Steam entry point".

Heck, as far as I know, they're the only DD store out there that directly sell Valve games (all Half-Lifes, L4Ds, and Portals).

One thing I get from reading through this thread: I understand why this is really great, but cannot understand why people trade their games in to Gamestop. Isn't that like the worst value trade proposition on earth?

Depends on what kind of promotion they're doing/how lazy you want to get.

I'm curious how many people use their trade in dollars towards these. If people begin to put trade dollars towards these cards, even by a small percent, that means lower sales for retail console games. Which...are already getting bad year over year as it is.

Should be fun to watch.

Is there a way to purchase funds for another Steam account as a gift via Steam? There doesn't seem to be any option available. I wonder if there were technical reasons why this hasn't happened yet... possibly a decision affected by retailer presence.

Their 50 percent trading bonus is a killer deal if you have the right games. The very first time i traded in my games, most of them older gamers, 19 of them in total i got over 150 dollars in credit on one trip. I only gave away maybe one or two great games and the rest of them i could care less for. I would go to Best Buy, but they actually ban you for trading in to much with them.

Count me as one of those people, once i found out about Steam Vouchers, i decided i would get my moneys worth from gamestop and then turn around and fuck them over by buying steam vouchers and not giving the money back to Gamestop.

Easier for non-Steam users to buy gifts for Holiday time?

This. A $50 and a $20 Steam voucher will go a long way on Steam and it's too much of a hassle to explain what Steam is and how to gift me Steam stuff for people in my family who have no idea about gaming.

Laziness / convenience. You can walk into a game store with a sack of crap, walk out with a new game, with zero effort. People will pay a lot of money for convenience. Sure, you'd get more money if you sold them all individually on ebay, but most people can't be bothered doing that.

So wait, it's confirmed this is only Gamestop exclusive or will it expand to other stores/territories?
