Sony E3 2012 Conference Thread

All of those people that purchased PSN+ this past week? Haha....bet they feel silly now! Can't say I didn't warn them, though.

Damn, I'm glad I didn't fall for that. I was so close, but I've never been a fan of blind faith. It worked out for me.

The Last of Us looks amazing. I love Ellen Page in Beyond. I was pretty happy with this conference over all. I'm glad the focus was on games.

Did Sony show more games than Microsoft?

Sony
Beyond
PS Battle Royal
GOW Ascension
The Last of Us
PSN Games

Microsoft
Halo 4
GOW Judgement
Forza Horizon
Fable Journey
Dance Central 3
XBLA Games

Was it really that different?
If we're being honest, and unless you want to include stuff like Kart Racing and Wonderbook.

Gameplay means a lot, too. That's where The Last of Us really steals the show. Halo 4 and God of War both showed gameplay that looked nice and everyone expected. PS Battle Royale showed a ton of gameplay, but it wasn't mindblowing or anything. The Last of Us, however, was.

I said they focused on games and it's quality, not quantity (and I didn't claim any relation to exclusivity, which you're implying with your list even though you're leaving out the vita titles) and I'll bet if you look at time spent on games Sony would beat Microsoft even if you don't count Wonderbook, which is just as much a game as Dance Central/Fable Journey.

How could anybody with a straight face include Gears 4 in the list of games MS showed? It was a 20 sec long FMV that didn't show a speck of gameplay. You might as well include every game Sony showed in the starting montage.

Why are they letting me play Infamous 2 for free if I have Plus, but not 1? Do I need to play 1 to fully enjoy 2?

No, not at all. And Infamous 1 was free during the game givaway that had after the PSN outage. Could have picked it up then.

To be fair, there was just as much Gameplay in that as there was Beyond and people are listing that as well.

Don't understand the listing of either, but eh what do I know?

So you agree that Microsoft showed just as many games. As for quality that is totally subjective and not worth debating.

In terms of a demo you can probably cross both of them out, but I think the Beyond trailer showed a whole lot more than the Gears trailer did. I'm not sure if that was even worth a commercial. The Beyond thing was a legitimate reveal, and was also in realtime.

What? Halo 4, splinter cell, tomb raider and a slew of other games was demoed. Blops2 was like 10 mins long itself. Comparing that wondebook shit to dance central and fable is stupid too by the way. Wonderbook should have never gotten that amount of time in the midst of that presentation.

A reveal maybe, but it still had Zero gameplay and even if GoW was short it was still a legit Reveal. I will give you Beyond did better, but neither had game play so neither should count if Gameplay was the key factor here.

The Beyond segment was gameplay, you just aren't playing, if you get my drift. It's similar to how Heavy Rain is.

This however is nonsense.

Beyond's shit was cut scene with no prompts from the player at all. It wasn't gameplay and shouldn't classified as such until it's shown someone actually interacting with it in some fashion.

Didn't own a PS3 at that time.

What slew of other games? Also, that wasn't "Fable" lol.

By your logic, Sony would have won by showing 4 second clips of dozens of games. Actually go count the games (and don't leave any out this time) -- I don't know which showed more and I don't really care to count them myself. Sony's gameplay showings were much stronger.

And lay off the strawman.

This however is bullshit.

The difference is that Beyond showed what you get when you buy the game and play it. Gears showed nothing but FMV.

Really crappy conference, but really enjoyed quantic dreams new game and the last of us. Rest was really bad but those two games were probably the games I am looking most forward to of what was shown today in any conferences.

Wow. Are we really arguing which conference was better? Both conferences was at least sub par, if not outright shitty. Does it matter if one was slightly less crappy than the other?

Eh, arguable. If you erase that Wonderbook shit from Sony's conference, you do have an actual conference though. Not sure the same could be said for Microsoft and getting rid of SmartGlass + Usher.
That makes no sense. A lot of content was announced and games is getting released this year. What is getting released this year for sony?

What slew of other games? Also, that wasn't "Fable" lol.
MS mentioned these games at their conference: -

Halo 4
Gears of War: Judgement
Forza: Horizons
Fable: The Journey
LocoCycle
Ascend: New Gods
Matter
Dance Central 3
Wreckateer
Nike+ Kinect
FIFA 13
Madden NFL 13
Tomb Raider
Black Ops 2
Splinter Cell: Blacklist
South Park: The Stick of Truth

Somebody was on some bad meth to approve the wonderbook segment. I know they had to incorporate Move into the presentation, but jesus christ.

Otherwise I thought the show was alright. I'm still a tad skeptical of Last of Us, to be honest.

Those are some neat mentions though.

Everyone is forgetting the RE6 demo, lol.

One of the main reasons I don't care about the conference pissing contest is most of the good stuff doesn't come until people are on the show floor anyway. Gears of War: Judgement had an amazingly short appearance in the conference, but there's already actual videos showing gameplay and details which is all I want.

I think the issue many people had with the gameplay from Microsoft's conf grenade is that all the games were remarkably similar - a handful of first-person shooters and a handful of heavily scripted third-person shooters.

Sony seemed much more diverse, with the adventure game style of Beyond, pure brawler/fighting game PSBR, action/adventure with Assassin's Creed 3, FPS with Farcry 3, action again with GOWA and then a heavily scripted TPS with The Last of Us (plus all the crap book stuff with the interactive kid's adventure and JK Rowling).

Sony probably did show fewer games, but it felt like they spent more time per game and also had a more diverse lineup. Both conferences did feel lackluster though.

Subjective.

Gow 4
last of us
farcry 3
ac3
beyond
sony smash bros
Wonderbook

Am I missing somthing?
That's it for actual demos. Now remove Wonderbook and I'd have been happier about it.

Just watched the conference. It was lacking any big surprise, but at least there was some diversity, which ranks it easily over the MS and EA confs. The Ubi conf is still the only one that looked like what an E3 conf should be.
Agree with this wholeheartedly. The only surprise was free games, which, what the hell ever. Although I guess Wonderbook was sort of a "surprise" lol.

Sony baffles me. Their conference had the smell of greatness until they took a big wondershit

All they had to do was replace that 20 min garbage with vita announcements and they would been more than solid even excluding no cloud thing disappointment

Halo 4 would still lose against Beyond or Last of Us :P

Obviously personal opinion, but both Beyond and Last of Us are looking like they'll give me something fresh -- not more rehashed FPS gameplay.

How was that list better then what MS put out? Those game should also be there only because it was demoed at the presser. Whatever, sony showed just as much as MS showed.

Yup. Ubi was fucking solid. It wasn't insanely good, but it wasn't shit. It was just fucking solid. I'm surprised that people haven't figured out how to have a solid showing yet, yet it's still the same demographic every year. Jesus. Find a solid balance like Ubisoft did, and please the all-too-vocal base demographic.

Well, because:
Gow 4
last of us
farcry 3
ac3
beyond
sony smash bros
Wonderbook
Halo 4
splinter cell
tomb raider
blops

Not to mention quality, exclusivity, new shit, time spent etc. I don't know that anyone knew a thing about Beyond.

So wait which demos from MS were 'remarkably similiar'?

Halo 4 was simliar to Splinter Cell?

Madden and Fifa Kinect demos were similiar to what?

Fable: The Journey and Gears of War: Judgement and Forza Horizon vids were similiar?

Tomb Raider and Resident Evil 6?

Wreckateer, Ascend New god, Dance Central 3, Stick of Truth? Where are the similarities?

Black Ops 2?

It was simply different to Sony's but NOTHING was 'remarkably' similiar.

Rather glad I didn't stay up for this. I haven't seen the Last of Us or Beyond stuff, which i'm sure was great, but news wise it sounds like this was pretty weak. Vita deserves much better than it appears to have got - I was more intrigued by the sliver of 'Playstation Mobile' developments. Looking more like Sony's mid-to-long term portable strategy. No cloud stuff? Very weird, perhaps the ink is not yet dry on the stuff that was being reported - disappointing it wasn't there given press teasing.

Well I liked Sony's conference a *tiny* bit more than MS's, but:

F3: we already saw this, 4 play co-op is the only real announcement. Whatever.
AC3: New (E3 footage for a) game! 10 second footage. Also, another game we already saw with FUCKING AWESOME navy battles. OK, you got me here.
Sony Smash: Meh, nothing special shown here. Nothing we haven't seen before.
Wonderbook: You should've left this off, your list would have looked better.

Neither were very great :/

edit: you edited! seems like we're on the same page at any rate :p
Oh I know, I'm not saying Sony had an awesome conference. Just mentioning games that had time spent on them. Actually, I'm not the one mentioning them- he was.

Not to spread FUD or anything, but I just came from the conference, and it was a disaster. The stadium that it took place in was literally 1/3 empty. Sony literally gave away hundreds of free tickets and this was still the result. Tretton, who for all intents and purposes seems like a swell guy, really botched up his lines from the teleprompter several times. You guys probably couldn't hear it from the televised footage, but people were laughing quite frequently at him. There's probably some deeper meaning about how Jack realizes that he's probably over his head, and it's possibly a sign of things to come. Furthermore, while I personally enjoyed checking out God of War, and Uncharted and such, several people walked out of the stadium as those demos were being played.

Now I'm not judging, I'm just doing my duty and reporting from the front lines, but that's how it played out. :(

I think the use of the conferences to announce everything all at once is over and we're starting to see everyone announce things over the course of the convention instead. Look at the Vita games getting announced since the press conference and other details like the Remote Play and Vita bundles that weren't part of the conference. Perhaps Sony is just trying to space everything out instead blowing their load right away, hence the near disclaimer at the beginning of the presser.

Not that is changes much. Wonderbook still blows my mind... shouldn't have dedicated 20+ minutes to that. Announce it over the blog and send out PR everywhere. Use that time for games and the Vita.
