Sony E3 2012 Conference Thread

Just got back. Pretty awesome for my first conference. And yeah, that woman laughing during Beyond was great. That being said, it's still the most exciting thing to come out of the conference for me.

lol.

well, unlike most fanboys grading their conferences higher then the other. i'm going to post my thoughts on the pressers. I own neither console by the way.

anyway.

EA - D- Really sucked hard, apart from simcity they had nothing of note.

Ubisoft- A- Games this year looks amazing across all platforms.... AC3, splinter cell blacklist, and watchdogs looks amazing.

Microsoft B- really fortified their position in the living room. Announcements of live channel espns, announcements of NBA, NHL, and MLB content. More digital content and movie partnerships. Xbox Music. finally joining the fray of pointless internet browsers for tv with a legit internet browser, halo 4, forza horizon, gears and great third party support, nike+ kinect, great kinect support, and xbox smart glass (shitty gimmick). Out of all this announced, i don't see how this make MS presser bad. :/

Sony- D- Beyond and the last of us is the only redeeming thing sony shown in this presser. I have a hard time trying to understand this. so loli bad. AC3 and sony smash bros was the only thing shown on the vita apart from the beginning montage. Sony failed hard on the vita this conference. psone games is a welcome edition but what else do sony have for this thing? The amount of content ignored is not a good sign for this platform. PS+ members receiving free games is a cool edition for paying subscribers, but no new content was shown...nothing. apart from great third party support, sony smash bros looked horrid, GoW 4 was underwhelming, and The wonderbook is stuff of e3 failure history. remind me of that crab from the 2006 presser. Really shitty stuff.

Fifa and Madden are the two biggest sports games in the EA stable hands down

Fable: The Journey- That Harry potter book game made Fable the Jouney look like Call of duty. 'draw a zig zag to create a spell' Clear the room'

Dance Central 3- Sequel to Dance Central 2 (metacritic 86) as opposed to being a sequel to Sony's Move game Everybody Dance (metacritic 66). which is
Usher sings new single 'scream' #13 in the US Billboard charts for the top rated Dance franchise this gen. Must somehow be abad thing.

Summer of Arcade - So wait are we pretending that Angry Birds is deep and immersive? Also announced Ascend new god, Loco cycle, and Matter. Game of summer Arcade will be Dead Light.

COD Black Ops - Exclusive whoring? Sony announced Assassins's Creed with EExclusive DLC and Far Cry with Exclusive DLC. I guess you don't mind Exclusive whoring when it's Sony.

Forza Horizon -Saw the Spike demo. it looks great.

That leaves us with Gears of War: Judgement and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune Lara's Moaning

Your right can't laura can't compete with Last of Beep. They kept beeping the language at the 'insert drake here' demo. Great llooking game but let's not pretend UC wasn't written all over it.

It's easy to bash ANY game on ANY stage. Keep em' coming.

I find it sad that I need to point this out, but I just hope we're all aware that a consumer of a product is also allowed to be critical and displeased with that product. Apparently negative opinions immediately imply fanboyism.

Appearantly there are some games Sony didn't bother to announce officially but included them in the press kits that were handed out.

- Dancestar Party 2
- When Vikings Attack (some kind of puzzle game for Vita)

And it's not entirely clear but The Unfinished Swan seems to be heading to Vita. Seems implausible for a Move game....

Dancestar Party was announced a few days back with Sports Champions 2.

As much as I hated sitting through that long ass presentation, the Wonderbook thing might actually turn out to be a big deal. In the same way that Wii Fit and Dance Central are big deals, but still.

The JK Rowling thing will sell, there will be 4 or 5 more books, and it will disappear into the night.

Stuff like that should be on tablets, not the TV.

Fair enough, a portion of his dance routine became actual gameplay. I'll concede that.

Whereas that magical book shit was 100% gameplay. Care to dispute how that demonstration wasn't gameplay?

Who said the magical book wasn't gameplay. IMO It just was the most horrible E3 demo in the history of Playstation conferences.

Many here can pretend, but had that same book demo actually had been a Kinect game demo GAF wouldv'e lost it's mind.

was Microsoft's conference better than Sony's? I believe so, yes

Sony showed games, a tactic I feel elevates their performance above Microsoft.

Microsoft devoted over half of their show to non-game related content, with inexplicable focus on spoiling movies and TV shows, advertising Nike and sports, and orchestrating an irrelevant Usher gig to desperately coat over the fact that they had only a miniscule of game-related content, and almost all of that was a mass of generic FPS footage from already announced games.

Sony wins, but only by default. Their conference was nearly is pitiable as Microsoft's pathetic performance.

First of all, that has nothing to do with xenophobia or nationalism. Secondly, Japan is easily one of the most xenophobic countries on Earth and Sony is a Japanese company. Finally, wtf?

What else does it mean when someone says a game looks "too Japanese" in a pejorative context?

You bring up Japanese xenophobia as though this somehow excuses western xenophobia.

Usher apparently choreographed some of the moves for the new Dance Central game.

There are seriously people arguing that Microsoft's conference was better..? Sony focused on games and the games they showed looked fucking awesome.

Microsoft had Halo 4 which looked stunning, but that was it. A really poor conference, with none of the memorable embarrassing Kinect moments.

At least Sony had quite a few awesome exclusive games (and a new IP) to show off. I was just expecting...more. Like everyone else, really, Sony's expectations were higher.

Seriously, what the hell happened to the Vita? All of those people that purchased PSN+ this past week? Haha....bet they feel silly now! Can't say I didn't warn them, though.

But the really big surprise is complete lack of an announcement for their streaming gaming service. How the heck did the media get that one wrong?

Last of Us looked awesome. That's it.

Plus MS didn't waste half their conference on WONDERBOOK. That alone made Sony's worse.

I give Sony a B-.

They showed new IP, new games, and had strong showings with Beyond and Last of Us (not to mention that Assasin's Creed 3 footage). I also thought the new characters and Vita cross-play for Battle Royal were smile worthy.

The downers? Not enough Vita talk and that awful Wonderbook push. Otherwise, I saw a lot of things I'd be purchasing day one.

I find it sad that you clump my post onto his. I just simply replied to your synopsis of thos games with mine. But for the record a picture of a console and games means absolutely nothing to what was posted.

Fratcore? Really now?

I hope Nintendo shits the bed tomorrow as well. Fuck E3. Everything is terrible.

Genuine lol, it really has been bad so far, so bad it's started become quite entertaining, I think this gen has lasted so long we're starting to lose it tbh, I know I am, I'm just tired, next gen please.

Who said the magical book wasn't gameplay. .

Razdek did. post #7359

Say what you will about the magical book thing, but I'll applaud bold risks taken in new IPs over recycling any day of the week.

By the way, I don't think we're the target audience for wonder book

Only thing that elevated Sony above MS was the Assassins Creed video. Other than that both companies treated their core games like token showings. They need to realize that their non-game offerings are CES stuff. No one watching these E3 conferences cares about anything but the core games.

I bring it up because if Sony exhibited any sort of quality like that, it would be more likely directed towards Japanese xenophobia.

And what it means is that Western games and Japanese games are different and it's not nationalistic, xenophobic, racist, or w/e to say that you don't like Japanese games. It may be a little ignorant, but definitely not offensively so.

was Microsoft's conference better than Sony's? I believe so, yes

I would put them on par with each other for a "core" gaming standpoint. However what's the defining factor is the difference in what Sony and Microsoft needed to do. Microsoft has been the top console in sales for a while, they can afford to coast to the end of this generation, so they didn't need a WOW performance. Sony however needs it, they have been struggling as company as a whole, PS3 sales need to be stronger, and the Vita is nearly anemic, they had more to lose, and so much more to prove and they came up short. So by extension yes Sony did do worse, not necessarily by content, but by expectations.

Microsoft showed more games then sony did even with all that. They hardly spoiled anything in GoT or pro so what the fuck ever.

Care to elaborate on them?
Well, the most obvious difference between the WiiU controller and the SmartGlass is how they function. This is purely speculative, but the SmartGlass doesn't interect with the console like the WiiU controller does. The WiiU controller basically streams a video feed from the console to the controller. This can't be done so easily with the SmartGlass, because of the varying screen sizes, ratios and resolutions of phones and tablets and the tech limitations. Because of that, what I think it does is download a small app to the device and run it, which in turn communicates back to the console. The fact that all we saw were simple menu interfaces for movies, Halo and Madden supports this. Something like what we saw with Rayman Legend will not be possible if the technology works this way. Doubt Microsoft intended it to work like the WiiU controller anyway.

Another difference is how they are used. Looking at the Madden example, you need to place down your controller, pick up your tablet, enter your formations and then continue playing with your controller. Doing this with the WiiU touchscreen is a lot easier as you never actually have to place down the controller. It can be used without interrupting play. As I mentioned in another thread yesterday, SmartGlass in Madden is more suited for a multiplayer experience, with one entering the formations and another playing the game.

And as Feep mentioned above, one is standard and the other is not. People expect there to be some sort of utilisation of the WiiU controller's screen. Whether it's to show a different perspective of a game (like those Wii Sports demos from last year), a detailed map view (similiar to the tactical map in Ghost Recon Online) or simply an menu screen with buttons which can be accessed with ease without interrupting game play. These types of interactions between device and console are almost certainly not possible with SmartGlass and the 360 and I don't think it's expected that they are anyway.

If it was capable of everything a WiiU controller could do, I'm certain Microsoft would have placed a much greater emphasis on it. Cool piece of technology, but serves a different purpose and in no way makes the "WiiU controller obsolete".

Really?

COD Black Ops - Exclusive whoring? Sony announced Assassins's Creed with EExclusive DLC and Far Cry with Exclusive DLC. I guess you don't mind Exclusive whoring when it's Sony.

You blatantly accused me of bias with that comment. I listed a few key items that stood out to me for each conference which another poster replied to with a list, to which I then further explained myself. You jumped into the middle of a conversation that I wasn't having with you. And yes, AC exclusive DLC is just as stupid as CoD DLC. Wonderbook and PS Move gimmicks are just as stupid as Kinect, and I dare not even bring up the Wii U controller because if we bring the Nintendo fans into this then I'll be skinned alive. (And because they haven't held their conference yet so I haven't got a firm opinion on it yet.)

At least Wonderbook was related to gaming.

Nike advertisements/Game of Thrones/Prometheus/Sports/More Sports/Bing/Usher were nothing to do with gaming.

I don't see why it matters when the end result is a boring waste of everyone's time. Sony also had Vita to support and massively dropped the ball, which hurts the conference a lot.

They both were dreadful.

Disappointed with how many of the rumors turned out to be false. No webstore, weak PS+ "revamp", no Gaikai, and no Diablo 3.

And yet MS still demoed off pretty much the same amount of games that Sony did. And I found MS's demos far more interesting. The Halo 4/Splinter Cell/Tomb Raider demos were far more exciting to me than basically anything Sony had outside of Last of Us.

All in all, I don't care though. Both sucked ass.

Wonderbook was better than showing that you can watch some more shows/movies/songs on 360, and at least to me it felt like they spent less time on it.

God of War singleplayer looked spectacular, but I guess that's expected. Beyond was leaked early, but it looked damn good. Beyond and Last of Us both look like super solid, mature (not cheesy) games -- you don't really find that too often.

And no PSN web store, was really looking forward to that, buying games on my phone and having my Playstation turn on and download them :-(

Eh, purely from a demo standpoint:

The Last of Us >>>>>>>>>>>>> Tomb Raider
Assassin's Creed >>>> Splinter Cell
Halo 4 >> God of War

I agree with your final statement though.

Pretty much agree with you here. I guess I give Sony a slight edge, but when both are so pitiful, that's not exactly a compliment. People are more than free to argue which shitty showing was worst. Even though I might have liked Sony's a bit more overall, I felt like Sony's was the most offensive though, given the lack of Vita. Ubisoft conference was pretty damn solid, and I hope Nintendo leaves us with a strong showing to cap everything off. Today was pretty disappointing.

So many Sony megaton!!!!

Haha. Sorry. I kid, I kid. Yeah, it was a relatively weak conference. I'd say they were about equal with Microsoft in content. Some cool stuff, but alot of wasted potential and questionable content focus.

I got to give it to that Sony guy on Twitter that tricked everyone into buying PS +. It was definitely slimy as hell, but it worked, and I do think it's a great service.

Did Sony show more games than Microsoft?

Sony
Beyond
PS Battle Royal
GOW Ascension
The Last of Us
PSN Games

Microsoft
Halo 4
GOW Judgement
Forza Horizon
Fable Journey
Dance Central 3
XBLA Games

Was it really that different?

Well, didn't they announce like 12 games being given out for free though? Not that you had to have it beforehand or anything, but still.

Dance Central 3.... was it worth it MS?

I know, but he was making it sound like you had to be on board before the conference, or Tuesday maybe to get whatever was coming, and that whatever was coming would be huge.
