Sony E3 2012 Conference Thread

Is the full thing viewable via PSN now in HD? I need to see AC3 and LoU again without the occasional stutter and compression of the live streams.

Literally at one point the dancing was synced up to the moves on Dance Central, which IS the gameplay of Dance Central. 'Simple as that'

Fair enough, a portion of his dance routine became actual gameplay. I'll concede that.

Whereas that magical book shit was 100% gameplay. Care to dispute how that demonstration wasn't gameplay?

Ubisoft: A-
> FarCry 3, Watch_Dogs, and Assassin's Creed III were all rather good presentations.

Sony: C
> Saved by Ubisoft: Assassin's Creed III Boat Scene + Liberation, and PS:AS:BR.

EA: C-
> Dead Space 3 has jumped the shark, but looks like a decent Gears of War knock-off now, and Most Wanted looks fantastic. Everything else was boring as all fuck.

Microsoft: F
> Fuck them. Fuck their fratcore fetish, their non-game bullshit, and their DLC exclusives. Nothing save for Halo 4 at the start even resembled a showcase from a game company.

You high? Microsoft showed...

Summer of Arcade games
Forza Horizon
Gears of War Judgement
Fable Journey
Dance Central 3
Tomb Raider
FIFA
Madden
CoD Black Ops
Splinter Cell

What are those?

why dont you go back and fucking read my one sentence assessment of each?

Only thing of interest in the MS conference, was Halo 4 (it was amazing, which is a lot coming from me since I've only really liked the first one). It's not like I read people's opinions on a forum to make my decision, Like i said a million fucking times already, I read the play by play, and had no interest in watching the entire hour plus show. But I still went through it all, fast forwarding in case there was something that would catch my eye.

And for Sony, it was God of War. I gave it a + because they announced 12 free fucking games for PS+ subscribers.

you're really bitching that I gave MS a D, and rated Sony higher at a D+?! They at least also showed two other games (never shown before) that people are into, Uncharted 4: Not Uncharted, and Ellen Page: The game, which I wasn't into so I left out.

Whose 'bitching' you have a right to your opinion. You originally said you didn't watch the MS conference. Then you you said you read about it. IMO. If you only watched one I thought it was odd that you rated both. Hence the SMH. nuff said

Last of Us looked cool, as did God of War and Beyond. I liked the ship combat in AC3 (looked similar to the pirate ship mini game from Sly 3, which I really liked) and AC3:Lib looked really cool.

Free PS+ games are awesome.

Too much PSSuite, waaaaay too much Storybook thing. (cool concept but it went on for FAR too long and didn't even seem to work that well) Sony spent a lot of time talking about the power of the PS3 and only on Playstation, which is always sort of annoying and comes off as filler. No Vita is very worrying/disappointing.

And no Ratchet and Clank: FFA and NO OVERSTRIKE? Really? Really? When EA didn't show it I thought for sure they would premiere the gameplay at Sony's presser. Wow. Is Insomniac at this year's E3 at all?

My grades:

Ubisoft: B+
Sony: B-
EA: C+
Microsoft: C-

Ubisoft stole the show, and will likely be the overall 'winner' this year. Sony was God awful, and only the stellar Last of Us and God of War saved them. Otherwise it would have been worse than Microsoft's. EA's was underwhelming outside of Need for Speed and Sim Goddamn City. Microsoft was a complete joke sans Halo 4.

Do we get to rank the press conferences here? OK!

Microsoft: D (Halo looked nice, too much kinect as expected, everything is a sequel)
EA: F--- (Sequels to stuff I don't care about + linkin park and guns)
Ubisoft: A- (Rayman, Watch Dogs, huge step up in terms of presentation from last couple years)
Sony: F (nothing we hadn't heard about before, everything is cinematic, no japanese games, pretends vita doesn't exist)

Gears of War Judgement
Fable Journey
Dance Central 3

removed the non exclusives for you, but I should probably remove the games that weren't new IPs as well.

I'm really interested in The Unfinished Swan. Hopefully they show something at this E3 (floor) after the trainwreck.

My thoughts on the conference:

Was pretty boring for the first hour.
The Beyond bit went on too long and was too slow and boring at the start. they should have just showed the action bits that they did in the end.
Battle Royale needs to copy SSB even more IMO. Doesn't really look too fun in its build-up super to kill gameplay.
Assassins Creed stuff was "ehh." Didn't really care for the boat shit, Ass Creed Vita looked aight.
God of War and Last of Us both looked awesome, really sucks that they are not coming out this year. I actually thought Wonderbook looked kinda cool, especially for kids.

C+

PS:All Stars was better than i thought. Quantic Dream stuff looked hacky as usual and i absolutely hated it. Last of Us looked great but its a shame the gameplay hasnt evolved much, framerate didnt seem too solid either but that might have just been me. Overall it was a pretty shit conference.

Seriously?

Actually, I'd like to hear it, too. I can't exactly voice my thoughts clearly, so when I tried to explain to my friend that Sony and Microsoft making controllers out of touch screen devices won't take away from Nintendo's thunder, he didn't believe me. I couldn't exactly explain why. All I managed to say is that the Wii U's controller is exactly that: a controller. The other devices are used for other reasons. Am I on the right track?

Also, in an effort to stay on topic, I enjoyed the press conference. Nothing groundbreaking was revealed, but we got to see Beyond and The Last of Us which looked pretty cool. They aren't doing a good job at making me remember the Vita exists, though.

Sony: F (nothing we hadn't heard about before, everything is cinematic, no japanese games, pretends vita doesn't exist)

First time I saw Beyond, First time I saw TLOU in action. First time I saw GOW single player.

Everything is cinematic? Wut?

Fair point with lack of Japanese games though they are probably appealing to American xenophobia and excessive nationalism.

Haha, looking back at the opening, Tretton was just damage controlling the press conference. I love the guy, because he was/is honest and Sony has taken a much more honest approach to their PR, but looking back it is kind of funny.

I think had they erased the Wonderbook from the press conference and maybe put in a few more games or even logos, the presser would've been better. I wanted more Vita. Hell, I would be happy with the entire press conference being one big Vita show. Going from such a strong start to Wonderbook was a complete disaster and killed all momentum they had. Wonderbook just ruined it, the lack of new games was upsetting and no huge announcements that blow people away. Not even a PS3 price cut.

I can't help but think the Vita is simply an afterthought to Sony, now. Sure, they announce a few games here and there but they have either already been leaked, not shown off in a good way or are simply ports of PS3 games. They are repeating the same mistakes they made with the PSP and that is sad. The machine has so much potential and they are just sitting on their thumbs, it seems.

Next E3 will most certainly be about the PS4 and the Vita will again become simply a filler for the sake of pacing the press conference.

Unfortunate. Disappointed, but still better than the Microsoft presser. Nintendo is going to destroy everyone, I think. Shouldn't be hard with a new console to show off. Sony needed huge announcements to help the company in general... didn't do it.

Wonderbook should've just been mentioned and maybe (very) briefly demo'd for about a minute or two. It was absolutely not the product that needed the single longest demonstration of the entire presser. But given JK Rowling's involvement, I wouldn't be surprised if screentime was one of the things Sony had to oblige in to be able to get her name/IP used in the conference.

Personally, from a bureaucracy-free perspective, it felt definitely odd to see Sony focus so much on this Wonderbook thing when they have a faltering handheld platform they need to keep alive. I was sure at least half of the presser was going to be all about Vita to show they were serious about their commitment, but they didn't even bother to make it a desirable product. I don't know if despite the lukewarm reception it's still performing within Sony's projections or that they're not worried about it's long-term performance, but to me that was the showing of a handheld on its way out, not one just about to launch.

Tomb Raider
FIFA

CoD Black Ops
Splinter Cell

What are those?

Fratcore:
FIFA
Madden
CoD Black Ops (+DLC Exclusive Whoring)
Splinter Cell
Forza Horizon - WUB WUB WUB, Hektik Skidz Bro!

Non-Game
Fable Journey - Kinect, On-Rails? Ok lol.
Dance Central 3 - I can't wait to bend it like Usher!
Summer of Arcade games - That First Person Angry Birds Castle game sure looked like a deep and immersive experience.

That leaves us with Gears of War: Judgement and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune Lara's Moaning

Really left me impressed.

removed the non exclusives for you, but I should probably remove the games that weren't new IPs as well.

To accomplish what exactly? My response was to the GAFFER that said Halo 4 was the only game shown at MS's presser.

lol, he used "non-game" to describe games. He's one of those...

After starting off strong with Halo 4, E3 day one was real troublesome to me. That is until late afternoon when i got so see some cool NFS like game, MGS: Rising, an kickass Ubisoft press conference (i'm still stunned to say that), and cool games from Sony's conference I'm quite pleased.

For all the homoginized "A for awesome" games that where thrown out at me, I am still walking away with a good list of games i'm excited for. Much more than last year. And we still get to see what Nintendo is up to and of course all the show room flow games (the ones that open up in variety of genres and gameplay)

I know GAF is jaded as hell but consider me excited after day 1. I have a good list of really exciting games on my list for this fall and early next year

Gooooo games!

removed the non exclusives for you, but I should probably remove the games that weren't new IPs as well.

Notice that he responded to

Sony: C
> Saved by Ubisoft: Assassin's Creed III Boat Scene + Liberation, and PS:AS:BR.

But you remove Splinter cell because it's not an exclusive?

Oh my bad the Assassin's Creed III is a PS3 exclusive?

Seriously?

Seriously. With Sony and Microsoft incorporating Nintendo's big next-gen feature into their current-gen systems, it could be a good thing for Nintendo in the short term--developers will actually develop stuff to take advantage of the tablet adjunct interface because of its relative ubiquity--but if the WiiU's hardware is only matching the 360 and PS3, they might be in trouble selling the system to core gamers, let alone the blue-sky audience that made the Wii a success.

The difference between SmartGlass and the Wii U controller is simple: ubiquity. SmartGlass will and always be supplementary material, bonus stuff, because you can't ask a player to shell out tons of money for a Windows 8 tablet or whatever. The Wii U presumably comes with a controller in-box, so it can be made an essential part of gameplay.

Well, honestly the thing I find weirdest is all the A's or really high Ubi marks. Don't get me wrong, Watch Dogs was amazing and easily my game of show but that was it. Far Cry 3 went on way to long and I was bored as hell by the end, the dude was completely worthless and shoudn't have been there and Ass Creed while nice didn't wow me.

Ubi B-
Micro - D
Sony - C-
EA - D-

Also, aside from my weirdness with everyones Ubi love no one else seems to share my biggest complaint. It's not Book of Spells or Usher, but Joe Montana. Seriously he felt so awkward and out of place this year. Maybe it was just me but the Joe section was the most painful part of the whole day.

Notice that he responded to

Sony: C

But you remove Splinter cell because it's not an exclusive?

Oh my bad the Assassin's Creed III is a PS3 exclusive?

My mistake on Splinter Cell.

Clearly AC3 would be removed from the PS3 exclusive list, the topic was always Microsoft, not PS3

HAHAHA, what?

excessive nationalism and xenophobia. what planet are you on?

Lately I've been observing a lot more:

"Fuck Japanese developers, Western Developers are where it's at" sentiment

Fuck that America rah rah rah bullshit.

It didn't help that Inafune chimed in with a similar sentiment which unfortunately validated this in the minds of a lot of xenophobes.

First time I saw Beyond, First time I saw TLOU in action. First time I saw GOW single player.

Everything is cinematic? Wut?

Fair point with lack of Japanese games though they are probably appealing to American xenophobia and excessive nationalism.
I don't even know what to say to this.

Microsoft: F

lol.

well, unlike most fanboys grading their conferences higher then the other. i'm going to post my thoughts on the pressers. I own neither console by the way.

anyway.

EA - D- Really sucked hard, apart from simcity they had nothing of note.

Ubisoft- A- Games this year looks amazing across all platforms.... AC3, splinter cell blacklist, and watchdogs looks amazing.

Microsoft B- really fortified their position in the living room. Announcements of live channel espns, announcements of NBA, NHL, and MLB content. More digital content and movie partnerships. Xbox Music. finally joining the fray of pointless internet browsers for tv with a legit internet browser, halo 4, forza horizon, gears and great third party support, nike+ kinect, great kinect support, and xbox smart glass (shitty gimmick). Out of all this announced, i don't see how this make MS presser bad. :/

Sony- D- Beyond and the last of us is the only redeeming thing sony shown in this presser. I have a hard time trying to understand this. so loli bad. AC3 and sony smash bros was the only thing shown on the vita apart from the beginning montage. Sony failed hard on the vita this conference. psone games is a welcome edition but what else do sony have for this thing? The amount of content ignored is not a good sign for this platform. PS+ members receiving free games is a cool edition for paying subscribers, but no new content was shown...nothing. apart from great third party support, sony smash bros looked horrid, GoW 4 was underwhelming, and The wonderbook is stuff of e3 failure history. remind me of that crab from the 2006 presser. Really shitty stuff.

what's with the new GIF font trend in this thread?

"That door(1) wasn't(2) there(3) before-"

...

This post is amazing.

I love House of Leaves.

I responded already to a similar reaction, but most recently I spoke to several people who refused to pre-order Metal Gear Rising and Anarchy Reigns because they were "Too Japanese". This sort of sentiment is way too common for my tastes
First of all, that has nothing to do with xenophobia or nationalism. Secondly, Japan is easily one of the most xenophobic countries on Earth and Sony is a Japanese company. Finally, wtf?

Really left me impressed.

Fifa and Madden are the two biggest sports games in the EA stable hands down

Fable: The Journey- That Harry potter book game made Fable the Jouney look like Call of duty. 'draw a zig zag to create a spell' Clear the room'

Dance Central 3- Sequel to Dance Central 2 (metacritic 86) as opposed to being a sequel to Sony's Move game Everybody Dance (metacritic 66). which is
Usher sings new single 'scream' #13 in the US Billboard charts for the top rated Dance franchise this gen. Must somehow be abad thing.

Summer of Arcade - So wait are we pretending that Angry Birds is deep and immersive? Also announced Ascend new god, Loco cycle, and Matter. Game of summer Arcade will be Dead Light.

COD Black Ops - Exclusive whoring? Sony announced Assassins's Creed with EExclusive DLC and Far Cry with Exclusive DLC. I guess you don't mind Exclusive whoring when it's Sony.

Forza Horizon -Saw the Spike demo. it looks great.

That leaves us with Gears of War: Judgement and Uncharted: Drake's Fortune Lara's Moaning

Your right can't laura can't compete with Last of Beep. They kept beeping the language at the 'insert drake here' demo. Great llooking game but let's not pretend UC wasn't written all over it.

It's easy to bash ANY game on ANY stage. Keep em' coming.

God of War looked pretty cool
Beyond seems awesome but that was all cinematic, so who knows what it's really like to play

The lack of Vita stuff was awful. I guess that device has been sent to die. Anybody want to buy mine?

Appearantly there are some games Sony didn't bother to announce officially but included them in the press kits that were handed out.

- Dancestar Party 2
- When Vikings Attack (some kind of puzzle game for Vita)

And it's not entirely clear but The Unfinished Swan seems to be heading to Vita. Seems implausible for a Move game....

As much as I hated sitting through that long ass presentation, the Wonderbook thing might actually turn out to be a big deal. In the same way that Wii Fit and Dance Central are big deals, but still.

The SmartGlass and Vita Controller things are a huge waste of time, IMO. Pretty much as Trey Parker joked. It just sounds like more of an inconvenience than a legitimate feature.

It may not be smart to grade these things based simply on how much of a shit we give, but meh. I have a hard time justifying the time I spent yelling at that douche to stop talking about books at E3.
