Forza Horizon demo impressions

It is just me or the thread has gone from "Oh! it is really great! amazing graphics/IQ!" to "Blurry, piss filter, bad everything, NFS is better"...

There are good things and bad things in games. Just like everything in Life. Day one for me with the Collector's Edition I hope.

Of course Horizon is not a classic arcade racer, but from what I played the driving model is in line with NFS: HP or the PGR titles. Not a sim, but also not Ridge Racer.

NFS Hot Pursuit is a big pile of crap. I regret wasting 6 dollars on that...
I dug it for the free roam, and it looks fucking spectacular, especially on PC. Races are a good time too.

Just wish it had cockpit view and manual gearboxes and driving through snow. Not just roads with snow on the side.

Yes, I know it, but it is really interesting reading first page and last pages of the thread.

EDIT: And it is really weird to read things like "great IQ!" or "good AA!" and later reading things like "blurry" or "piss filter".

Not in the demo unfortunately.

Aw... =/

The PC port is the reason of my complains. o_ô

Absent rain effect (fixes after some patches), no AA (even in photomode, WTH?!), no optimizations (poor framerates), etc.

It was the last EA game that I bough for my PC. No way in hell I'd install that spyware called EA Origin on my computer.

It looks great, but somehow...a bit cartoony.
The handling could be more direct and the force feedback is not strong enough imo. I sometimes don't feel the wheels touching the road. Sense of speed is hard to say. It's hard to judge the game on this demo. The split/second demo was kinda bad, but I had a great time with the final product.

Visually the game is really impressive.
Driving those dirt tracks in the night might be my favourite thing to do in this game when it comes out :D

I am not feeling that Viper though, it spun out randomly and I don't know why really.

I agree with this. Best part of the demo was when I got that Mitsubishi. I really hope we could get some decent Loyalty cars from Forza 4. (Helios give us the numbers regarding Levels please, please!)

Can't wait for some Volkswagen too :p

Now I am playing "cat & mouse" with a buddy at those speed traps. Damn he is fast, lol.
The message stuff is really cool.

What message stuff?

If someone on your friend list beats a time from you, you get a message "X just beat one of your speed traps times" (or something like that) You can then set a waypoint and win it back :)

edit: In the ingame message center, not Xbox stuff.

Very fun and different enough from Forza 4 makes this an easy purchase, felt like the 1st Tony Hawk in the racing genre, by that I mean the amount of control you have and the satisfaction you get when you barely make it out of a turn is so satisfying. Quick points:

-The person that said you'll experience understeer a lot is 100% wrong, I was able to push and accelerate into turns and most of the time I've drifted out or barely coasted my way out. Has the exact same handling structure of Forza 4 but it's much more forgiving and and encourages you to be reckless, the E brake will make you do outrageous maneuvering this time around as well. I was also racing with all the assists off with manual/clutch control being on and rewind being on.

-They made the sense of speed feel fantastic, surprisingly due to the lower framerate.

-Very beautiful landscape

-Very, very bad soundtrack. Get your own music just in case.

Great demo. LCE purchase justified.

My initial reaction was that the car handling felt less tactile and floatier than FM4's, (even with all assists off), but it's accessible and vastly better than what usually passes for handling in these sorts of games-- lookin' at you, TDU). For some reason, I can't brake for shit without ABS in this game. I can modulate the brakes perfectly fine in FM4, but here I'm locking up left and right. I agree with those noting the Viper seemingly breaking traction at random; the Evo and Boss both felt more predictable to me. The S-class street race at the dam was still great fun, though, especially the final stretch on the highway when dodging oncoming traffic at 160 mph.

I'm loving the instant Rivals challenges and speed traps. If anything, the Rivals integration in Horizon might turn out to be even more addictive than in FM4.

So it's like Burnout Paradise?

Isn't that Forza 4 on the triple screen setup? (32 seconds in) unless I missed a later shot of it.

I could be wrong (been MONTHS since I've played F4) but that doesn't look like any tunnel I remember from Forza 4.

EDIT: Actually, it probably is Forza 4 going by the HUD elements...

Good, glad there are some people who agree with me about the handling. For those comparing it to PGR4, the handling is probably like that in regards to it's "distance" between itself and sim handling, but they're polar opposites, IMO. PGR4 handling in this game would be incredible... but this is a long, LONG way from that.

It probably is (in part, at least) to the lack of vibration... everything felt absolutely pissweak. A surprise in addition to the fact that you couldn't adjust vibration beyond 100%. I don't even know why you'd have an option to adjust it gradually anyway (yeah, I like to have my vibration set to 63% *exactly*... :/ ) but it definitely needed to be stronger.

It's a no-buy for me at this stage. I'll probably get back into Midnight Club LA unless the feel of the game is drastically improved and the piss filter is removed completely. I guess there are some things the ex-Codemasters guys can't let go of.

Feels like an open world PGR to me, i love it. PGR4 is my favorite racer.
And it looks gorgeous.

what is up with the UI/menu's? did someone from DiRT make it?
Some staff who worked on DIRT probably worked on this, yes! There are ex-Codies guys, but I'm not sure who, specifically.

PS. PGR4 for life <3
Now this gets me excited. I loved PGR.
Don't get too excited yet.

Oh, and not truly being TDU-esque open world = fail. It's far more restrictive than when Dan said "We'll stop you from getting into places where you'll get stuck like the bottom of a hill etc.". You basically can't drive off the road *at all*.

Ironically PGR 4 feels like SHIT with a wheel, lol. I absolutely love the PGR series but PGR 4 at least wasn't designed with using a wheel in mind. Don't know if it was any better in 1-3 (played them all with a gamepad).

I personally think the driving model in Horizon is better than PGR's. I'm not understanding the complaints, but maybe its cuz I haven't tried it with a wheel yet.

Really loved PGR, especially PGR4. I like this more but maybe it's because of the open road. The Viper is still trash, wonder what that is.

I LOVED PGR4.. Gotta admit that it helped a lot that they included Quebec City hehe (that's only like 2.5h away from here and I used to live there) but it was so fun.

The crazy races on the nurb in a snow storm with black ice in a Ferrari Enzo haha.

Like the handling of the cars and the races are interesting. Autolog is a welcome addition to any racing game. But the demo also shows the biggest fears I have: Everything looks and feels the same. Colorado is more like Orangeado, I have a hard time seeing traffic until they turn on the lights. Should always drive around with lights. And the map is just too small. The demo covers 13 of 216 roads but most seem to be really short. Like 20 meters. It will take less than three minutes to go from one end of the map to the opposite. That's just bad for an open racer. Which isn't that open to begin with, there are visible and invisible walls preventing you from going anywhere except the roads.

I'd rate TDU 2 higher than Forza Horizon - and TDU 2 was already way worse than the original TDU.

It is just like dirt 2 with the forza brand. :\

aside from the completely different handling, physics, mechanics, structure and sub-genre itself you mean ? yeah, if you forget about those i have to agree menus do look kinda similar.

it's a solid game.

Very impressed with IQ: It's as perfect as this gen can get i think. A tiny bit on the soft side (then again, anything sharper and people would have complained about dem jaggies !) but not blurry at all, very natural looking, makes the picture very 'consistent'.
No idea what they're using, but it's certainly more effective than than fm4's 4xaa you get in single player races and replays.

I for one can't stand those dramatic orange tints at sunrise and sunset. I wish they went with something much more subtle, they really ruin the graphics for me. Shame since the game can look beautiful and i expect tons of incredible pictures from the photomode.

handlihg and physics didn't feel quite as complex as fm4's, but they still felt very good. Absolutely nowhere close NFS HP.

Very disappointed in the way rumble is used.

edit

Good, so i'm not the only one who thought so. It was perfect in fm3 and 4, so i don't know what happened here.
It's not just a matter of intensity, you often expect your controller to shake and absolutely nothing happens. Very distracting.

Anyone got the chance to try it with a Fanatec ? My pedals are not working again :(

My experience with the demo bumped up my purchase plan to day 1. Definately up from some where down the line.

Yeah, I feel the same way. I bought every Forza game that has come out on Day 1, but was not sure about this one at all. Demo definately sold me on the game. I think the lighting is pretty amazing...the piss filter is a little of a turn off, but overall I think it plays great and looks really good.

Demo is actually pretty meaty as well which is a big plus.

Awesome to read some peoples opinions about their final verdict on the final game based on this demo ;_;

I thought it was more than Okay, I have the Dirt games and in my opinion this Demo was more fun, even the demo. I love the Mustang VS Mustang, and the the rival, (which was my best friend IRL)

Must also have 4x AA.

Final verdict on when Final game is out. Solid demo.

I'm one of those unfortunates who can easily tell the difference. My very first post on the Bizarre forums way back in 2003 was a rant on the very subject of halving the framerate from PGR. It was the reason I joined the forum - I was furious about it and wanted to vent my spleen. Things improved after that - I was invited to the Bizarre Christmas party and ended up being one of their PGR Nations official bloggers.

Never forgave them, though.

I understand your concern but imo it was for the best. PGR2 is tight and has much better visuals. It's also a much better game overall. But yeah, 60fps is just that good, can't deny it.

Demos for open world racers are always hit and miss. I never liked the Burnout Paradise demo because it was way too constrained - but the full game blew all of those worries away.

I think I'd prefer demos for open world games to operate on a timer in a relatively huge area rather than giving us, say, a single neighborhood to tool around in.

Yes please. I loved Dirt2 and this feels like a sort of spiritual successor.

Horizons made by ex codemaster employees...hmm, so is this why Dirt3 was terrible?

With my PWTS the force feedback is cutting in and out

Yes, it's not good idea to judge an open world game based in a demo.

I canceled my Burnout Paradise pre-order after the demo.

That intro better be skip-able in the final game or else I'll be skipping the game. if there is one thing I hate in games is intros or cutscenes that can't be skipped.

Rating TDU2 higher than any racing game is just nuts :)
The handling... oh god taht handling.
Yeah, I don't get that at all. The are two good things about TDU2: the holy shitballs size of the maps and the fact that you can drive an Ariel Atom.

If somebody could post an awesome drift video from TDU2 I might change my mind. Good luck on that one. ;p

I had the same exact reaction. Picked it up later on a lark and kicked myself for avoiding it at the time. So good.

Especially considering how amazing TDU1 was....ugh...stupid Atari.

Certainly feels quality all-around. Good-looking, good handling.

But my overall feeling playing the game, was that of a PGR/DIRT-influenced Test Drive Unlimited try-hard, without the style. Played for over half an hour, nothing really grabbed me about this.

I don't think I'm missing anything by passing this game over.
