Forza Horizon Review Thread

Polygon is not the Verge.
My mistake, im not in the know when it comes to these things.
I assumed it was The Verges' gaming side.
My mistake....so is Polygon like its own magazine/website that just gets rehosted by The Verge or what?

yes it is, 4xAA or similar seems to be applied, virtually no shimmering etc, its clean like a nuns arse, these are the true benefits of 30fps, as seen in codies games (GRID especially, 720p 4xAA)
Yep. Direct capture.

Impressed, the game looks damn damn clean.

Having no set checkpoints to have to pass through actually works well, as you can take your own route to the finish "checkpoint" cannonball run style :)

This is what I like to hear, man the rallys im gonna set up will be epic!
Helios could you send me a copy of the game, I just moved to Australia and games here are ridiculously priced.....I promise I will get the Season pass if you do!

P.S Helios why are you a Junior?

Great scores and great for the team at Playground. Would love them to tackle a PGR game or even another Horizon game set in Europe.

I have a history this gen of renting racing games and not getting into them after loving some of the gran turismos of last gen, but again I am tempted out of nowhere...this looks really cool.

I know how expensive games are over there and I feel your pain, unfortunately if we sent out free copies to everyone who asked we'd go out of business :)

No idea why I'm a junior, what should I be?

I've read Kollar's reviews before, and found them to be well-constructed and insightful.

This review spends far too much time focusing on elements that most fans of this genre would consider secondary to the core driving experience. The most interesting thing I learned from the review was the issues he experienced with the rubber-banding of the AI.

Aside from that, I gleaned little of value from the text. I'm not even concerned about the score applied here. The focus of the review seems so 'off' that it's quite easy for me to ignore.

Sorry, dude...know you read the boards. Will continue to check out your other stuff!

Awesome scores.

I knew it would do well after what I played in the demo. It wasn't on my radar before, but after playing it I will definitely be picking it up.

The one thing that has me scratching my head is this part:

Though the cars look and control great, Horizon’s visuals take a huge step back from Forza Motorsport 4’s stunning graphics.

Did I play the same game?

The rest of the review is fine.

I haven't played either yet, but I took that to mean the bystanders, grass textures, that sorta' stuff. Like everything else is really nice, but for these things...which is fine to point out, but if the overall visuals are great, I don't think you need to spend quite so much text pointing it out.

See, this is what I don´t get. Why analyse the review to find reasons for the score that you don´t like. It´s his opinion and as such has to be respected. If you you don´t care for peoples subjective opinions you shouldn´t read reviews at all and just look at the number on metacritic.

Drove me crazy in the RE6 review thread and drives me crazy here.

Both are owned by the same parent company, VOX Media, and The Verge is basically giving them shelter and let them use their CMS (in return for all the clicks, of course), until the Polygon guys get their shit together. And it's likely that Polygon and The Verges share the same tech, so migrating all that content should be very easy for them.

Words. What do they...mean?

I think you may need to re-read what I posted. I couldn't care less about the score. It's the text I take issue with.

Tell The Verge/Polygon you want your review copy back, then ship it to me.
(sigh) I guess its back to living on 2 dollars a day for me.
The game plus the season pack is gonna cost me two arms and a leg....how am i gonna play?

Someone gets it.

the rubber banding is worrysome, specially because it tends to be quite annoying at higher difficulties when its just the AI cheating. At least that has been my experience in other games. Rubber banding should be a thing of the past at this point.

edit: Also I don't see the big issue with the Polygon review, he explained his points well and that was his opinion, I tend to think their reviews are very well done overall.

Rubber banding is a thing of the past.

Dan renamed it 'smoke and mirrors'.

Playing the demo and seeing the scores really makes me wish this wasn't coming out a week before NFS, but i will play this... eventually.

Ugh. The demo is mediocre. These scores are signs of a genre so long in the doldrums that we've got used to bland racers. The eurogamer review is particularly galling, I don't really care about the other sources.
Or maybe its a sign of a fun game?

Couldn't be that, though. You didn't like the demo. Game is crap, confirmed.

Great to see Microsoft heavily invested in the racing genre again.

This looks fantastic.

They need to buy this studio and put them onto PGR5!

I've seen post like this few times already and I'm wondering ...

Lets say they buy PG or let them handle PGR, should Microsoft drop Horizon completely to revive the PGR brand?

i might just actually get this... the demo scratched an itch i didn't know i had, and as far as Most Wanted goes, I want to wait to see if the PC port is better than the Hot Pursuit PC version in terms of optimisation and if there's going to be a Wii U version before I make a platform selection for it.

That would be amazing. It has a massive following they just can't go wrong.

On the other hand though, it would mean going back to closed circuits again. I'm not sure that's what they want. As it stands now, you would have FM5 as the circuit racer and Horizon 2 as the open world racer...

Nope. It would be too challenging to revive the PGR name, Forza Horizon 2 or Forza Infinity will probably be next and it'll be a next gen game.

What? You're trying to downplay the opinions of ALL these reviewers, yet you're going to say I'm the one struggling with the idea of opinions? lol

no, I'm just calling what I see with my own experiences. So what if it's different to these guys? I'll express it here if I like, whatever the hell you think. The demo is bland, and the annoying festival/radio oik is extremely irksome. The rubberbanding is bad and there are no crash physics to speak of. These are major demerits in my book, flat out ignored by most of these rags.

Deal with it.

(Credit to zorbsie for the awesome flyer!)

If all goes as planned, the |OT| should be up by next Tues/Wed.

Also, I am pretty surprised that it is getting such great reviews. I mean, I have been STOKED for this game for a while now but I just sort of figured it would get middling reviews because of all the confusion on what kind of game it is. Glad to see I was wrong!

I never had a problem with you not liking it. It was your 'I think this based on playing the demo, so all these scores are because of blah blah blah' that I took issue with. It definitely seemed that you are the one struggling to understand that these other people might actually enjoy the game.

i'm not surprised by these reviews. i think the game always looked promising. it's a case perhaps of GAF skepticism which isn't a bad thing or anything, but it does seem to be slightly random at times as to which games GAF gets skeptical about during development.

fortunately, that goes away once the game comes out. Playground always looked like a talented studio, and I just couldn't imaging microsoft putting the Forza brand on something that wasn't shaping up well.

On a more serious note the music in this game is fantastic.
On this, does anyone know how many tracks there are in total?
Feels like I'm hearing the same songs from the demo in a lot of media that has come out today.

Polygon's activist reviewer is at it again I see

I am so very glad that is sarcasm. lol

Here you go man: http://www.examiner.com/article/new-forza-horizon-details-music-list-season-pass-info-video-documentary I know there is a Spotify playlist out there, but I am not sure where.

Eurogamer's opening paragraphs are right-on. This game is so unbelievably tacky. When I heard that song from that fucking Doritos Loco commercial I wanted to turn it off right there.

The game is fun, I am sure it will be good, but the DLC nonsense will keep me away for a while. Hopefully there will be $30 sales in December.

The host of a free roam session is able to set a group "checkpoint" that you can all race to if you wanted to. You won't get any checkpoints enroute that you have to pass through or a defined set end point, but with a bit of creativity you can work around that quite easily. For example you'd have to have a start countdown via voicecoms, and you'll have to organise lining up at the start yourselves. As I said though, not that hard to work around with a tiny bit of organisation.

Having no set checkpoints to have to pass through actually works well, as you can take your own route to the finish "checkpoint" cannonball run style :)

I'm looking forwards to doing a race from one end of the map to the other, trying to find the fastest route through the game world!

I hope the above makes sense, fingers crossed someone will create a few videos of the free roam portion of the game, and show off some of the possibilities available to players with a bit of organisation, as well as the co-op challenges. It's easier to show rather than tell :)

makes sense, thank you.

p.s. dont forget to let the team know that we need (a) more driving feedback on the pad and (b) beefed-up engine noises and sfx.

So, where is everyone planning on preordering it from? I'm torn between Amazon's sexy Aston Martin Virage, and Best Buy's SLS AMG. DECISIONS.

I agree even though I really want the game and buying the LE tin of it, it's very Dirt 2 as in "dude, bro!" and the festival feeling, while done really well is just trying to be cool, not actually being cool if that makes scene.

In the demo I loved the guy with the mic and his partner with the tv camera recording your start to the race, love that stuff, it's the whole meet up with frank he is a bro and can get you a sweet ride stuff I try to distance myself with.

I think that is something PGR did right, it had huge crowds, spectators watching street racing done as a real racing sport, not a meet up.

Are there any filters for driving assist on rivals races times?

Or i'm just challenging the best time overall, even if obtained with drive assists?

Seriously, I cannot wait to set up some GAF Cannonball Run races soon. Gonna be wild! Jube/Helios, you guys up for giving some Unicorns and/or prizes for some of these Gumball/Cannonball Rallys? ;)
