Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered | Review Thread

SlimySnake

Flashless at the Golden Globes
Just an FYI, if you bought the original from the Epic Game Store, the upgrade is only $8.99.

It's only one dollar but I love Epic.

I mean it looks nice but after 30 minutes I was bored cause I’ve already played this before. Glad it’s on my library to play in a year or two.

This port seems very well optimized. Only ran the benchmark, but there was no stutters. And performance is good.
This is max settings. Motion blur, DoF and vignette disabled.
Updated FSR 3.1.1 to 3.1.2 and it works fine.

The 10€ upgrade option just doesn't appear to me even if I have the horizon ps4 Blu-ray disc inserted in the ps5.

I can't understand why...

The remaster release date was today, right?

Imagine if Bloodborne was anywhere near the caliber of Horizon. This is a massive franchise.
It's not a matter of franchise. It's a matter of the engine. Whatever From Software uses, it sucks.

Now that Nixxes is familiar with Decima, I hope it sees more widespread adoption across SIE studios, and even third parties. Instead of UE5. Outside of OG Until Dawn and Death Stranding (2), I don't think other studios have used it? They definitely should. Even with no RT (which, in my opinion, wouldn't be worth the tradeoff at least with current-gen consoles), it looks absolutely gorgeous.

True, but I was just saying why Horizon gets this sort of attention. People say "why do they focus on this so much". Well, the answer is simple - lots of folks buy it.

That said, I think Nixxes could do Bloodborne some justice and Sony would be nuts not to try it!

I'm saying, chances are, given how that engine runs everywhere - they couldn't. This was "just" a small matter of upgrading assets and applying the enhancements of Decima that have already been implemented. And new mo-cap. No small feat for sure, but they didn't have to rework the engine. Whereas with the From Software engine... I have no personal experience with it, but given how lacking it has been for ages, I assume it'd be like "It's pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue."

The performance is amazing, but I think RT games spoiled me because the lighting in Horizon Remaster looks extremely flat to my eyes. Once you experience what RT has to offer, there is simply no going back to PS4-like graphics.

1440p
140fps DLAA (native), max settings
163fps DLSS Quality (the game was CPU limited with these settings)
238fps DLSSQuality + DLSS FG

2160p
89fps DLAA (native), max settings
120fps DLSS Quality
144fps DLSS Quality + DLSS FG

Benchmark screenshots in the spoiler.

Yep, getting over 80fps maxed at 4k with DLAA and around 115fps with DLSS on my 4080 system.

Will also test with the 4090 tomorrow and post benchmarks, but so far so good, really well optimised and it's stunning.

Only issue I've had is that it's a big quiet with the surround sound system, so something might be off with the audio mixing that they need to fix.

The benchmark looks "flat", but the actual game is anything but once you get past the initial young Aloy tutorial.

I forgot how I hated playing as that stupid kid

Yep, couldn't get through that shit quick enough. Probably in one of my top 10 worst intros to a game ever.

Well... This is not the game I expected to show me what a CPU limit at 4k looks like, but here we are. The most unexpected set of results ever with DLSS quality:

vQkoM1.png

Yes, that's a 4090 + 5800X3D system getting outperformed by a 4080 + 9700X system. The 4090 has over 150 fps in the tank at those settings but it's really being held back by the 5800X3D, even at 4k.

And then with DLAA:

What this is telling me:

  • If I'm to get a 5090 I need to retire the 5800X3D system and get another AM5 one set up with a 9800X3D (I should probably do that regardless looking at these results)
  • The 9700X is far better than I was led to believe by the reviews. I don't know whether it's because I've stayed on windows 10, or whether it's because I've paired it with DDR5 6400 CL30 (and I've got it running in gear 1), but either way, I did not expect it to be out-running the 5800X3D (paired with DDR4 3200) the way that it has been for me.
  • The 9700X + a 4080 is a very balanced system.
I bought the 9700X because of its thermal behaviour (which has enabled me to keep the noise down) along with its emulation performace but I've ended up getting far more than I bargained for. The most pleasantly surprised I've ever been with a component.

I'm surprised the 9700X is so much faster than the 5800X3D, but 105fps is still far above 60fps, and with DLSS FG performance would skyrocket. If I had the 5800X3D, I wouldnt even think about upgrading this CPU, because such an upgrade would be all about trying to impress other people, than for my needs. It's very easy to use free GPU performance if you are CPU limited, so I would just enable DSR or DLDSR and play the game with insanely high image quality. As for the RTX5090 I believe this GPU will be limited at 4K in most games regardless of CPU. Only PT games like Alan Wake 2, Cyberpunk, Black Myth will show noticeable difference compared to the 4090.

Yeh to be fair, the 4090 + 5800X3D combo has given me more than enough performance in every game I've thrown at it. It's only now that I have a point of comparison on the CPU side that it's making me realise performance is being left on the table.

Anyway, will see if the 5090 is a significant enough upgrade for me to do anything early next year and then go from there.

Well now they look better and we're happy to have them.
Fair enough, can you not see that it slows down other releases or taking smaller AA size risks though?

Even if some of these don't take MUCH effort, still affects new game release timings and potentially sometimes even making *different games*

This was done by Nixxes and Weaseltron whats the opportunity cost there?

I'm actually more up in arms about all the GAAS crap that's being chased rather than these remasters that are being farmed out to support studios.

How does Nixxes doing a remaster slow down other releases? they are a port studio, unless you are concerned there arent enough PC ports? (they have released 2 PC ports in the past year not including this, which is day one on PC also so even that argument is a little thin)

Anyway....... this game looks stellar, my only issue (and its not really an issue) is that because this isnt a remake I dont get to experience the upgraded abilities and combat improvements (and flying mounts) etc. from FW, but thats totally to be expected.

So i can start new game + with the shield armor and it doesnt pop any trophies? if true i might attempt the ultra hard mode.

can anyone confirm this please?

Yes. But with caveats. You can't unlock combat related trophies, such as stealth kills, death from above, dismount kills, headshots, killing enemies weak to x element while suffering x element, detaching machine parts, detaching heavy weapons. Can't get trophy for acquiring shield armor.

Level trophies will only pop if you're under level 60 and level up. Ghost levels don't count. Skills trophy unlocks due to the game story locking skills right at the start.

All gotta be done on a fresh save.

Looks like the trophies only go off the stats page and only award if you hit the reward number. Anything above and it doesn't register.

Kinda stupid since alot of people will be using a NG+ file.

So these studios couldn't make games and no other studios have released remasters?

Anyway I knew when I posted it wouldn't go down too well. But I'm sticking to my opinion 😂

Enjoy the cheap upgrade, that's at least a plus, $10 is a good price point for sure

Nixxes haven't done anything other that ports for Sony, no, and it's irrelevant if other teams have done remasters as we are talking about this remaster which was done by Nixxes so this port doesn't affect other games/releases in any way (in fact it's good timing, this may increase sales of the Lego Horizon game)

Could they make original games? Yeh, sure, but they would need to hire additional staff especially writers etc.
