All-new PlayStation Plus launches in June with three flexible membership options

I can't believe people were expecting first party games at launch. Most of those games sell like crazy, why on Earth would Sony go down that route when there's no reason for it and would probably end up being a lot less profitable for them?
Self-delusion? Stupidity?

For all the criticism Jimbo gets, he's at least been consistent on this. Game budgets are getting bigger. Increasing the price of first-party games to £70, and putting them on the subscription service literally makes no sense.

Business is about anticipating and responding to changing conditions and trends.

Just because people think Sony's strategy might be lacking, doesn't make them trolls or Xbox fanboys.

So yeah, you're taking a Gamepass Ultimate very extreme deal and assuming there won't be upgrade options and deals for the Sony service? Ok then.

Gamepass Ultimate is still officially $180 per year tho...
OK but they get 1st party and even some 3rd party games day 1 though that a huge difference

he took the tweet down lol, probably gonna edit and reup.

edit:

Up again and removed the PS2 streaming part

Unless I misread the post.

- PS1, PS2, PSP games will be downloadable
- PS3 games will be streamed, thank the arch of PS3 for that
- This isn't just for 1st party titles this will be 3rd part as well, much like gamepads, you will get 3rd party titles day 1
- 1st party titles will eventually come to the service

Are people being wilfully stupid? never.

I am glad they are not offering day one releases on their first party games....that has clearly been proven to be a breeding ground for mediocrity.

The Plus Extra tier seems reasonable value if you are new to the console, but there won't be much in it for me I expect.

I'm just happy 1st party games aren't going to be day 1 on the service.

Imagine being deluded into thinking no day 1 releases is a good thing for Sony......

As for the service, it looks like it would be a good start but I'm assuming the vast majority of the those 400 PS4/PS5 games are just the lackluster PSNow catalog, but locking classic games behind the highest tier , and streaming only PS3 (plus some of the older games too), combined with no day 1 games, it seems like a huge swing and miss for Sony. Yes I know it was not supposed to be a Game Pass competitor, and it was just a rebranding, but they still should've had more than what they ended up with, rightly or wrongly, people are going to compare this to Game Pass, and see how much worse of a service this is

Not a bad deal for people who can’t afford to buy a ton of games. I wish I had this / gamepass as a kid. A bit underwhelming compared to the competition tho.

I remember when I had to live on a budget this would have been great. I could rarely afford new games (or even budgeted games) - but I could scrounge up $15/month by pinching a few pennies here and there.

I think Sony is largely targeting the kind of customer who only owns a PlayStation and don't (or can't afford to) buy many new games. So if they can upsell say several million-or-so current subscribers they'll consider it a success and then attempt to grow it further.

Because it will lead more and more people to Game Pass where they don't have to spend 70 bucks per game.

The problem here for Sony is that Xbox got a fantastic service right now where you don't have to purchase day one exclusives titles, and you get them across PC and consoles, with cross-save and cloud streaming. And all that is up and running.

Right now Sony got enough massive studios to produce tons of great games, but when the Bethesda machine starts up Xbox will easily match them, and when you combine that with Game Pass that will offer all of this within the service, it's gonna draw players over to Xbox, away from Sony.

This lackluster PS+ shit right here is gonna get smacked by Xbox over the next few years unless Sony takes this more seriously and understands what they are up against.
It'll only be a problem once Activision and Bethesda games start releasing because as of now their first party games outside Forza Horizon are pretty trash.

As a Playstation owner, I have two general gripes.

Firstly, MS’ backwards compatibility and boost is years ahead of what Sony is offering.

Secondly, whilst I do accept the financial reality of developing AAA software, their current prices are simply too much. If they’re not going to be on a subscription service day one, then that doesn’t mean they have to be 70 pounds either.

Today’s announcement is underwhelming.

Sounds pretty good, the prices are decent for what they offer but in the end the games available are what will make the difference.

I hope in the future Sony makes a $20 one that offers their exclusive games on day one, but this is a good start.

I don't know if I'm going to upgrade or stay on the essential having game pass until mid 2022, but we'll see.

If you don't think it's worth paying 3 extra bucks for month, you probably don't care about those games anyway.
Or $20/year.

Sounds pretty good to me.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
You can buy 3 years of Gold than buy gamepass for $1 then convert so 3 years for like 180 wile Sony new thing is 119 yearly

You can get 3 years of GPU under $120 if you use cheaper Gold cards, not so different than how PS+ occasionally has discounts on their cards too.

You don't know if there won't be third party day on on Sony's service... So this point is moot. And about the MS day one games, I don't think PS Users care about those.
They do. Of course they do. They definitely care about the show being day one! We saw they last year. And again this year! Lol

No Silksong? = Delivering the pain.
Seems like a very natural evolution of their already existing services. Happy that the essential tier did not get a price increase. I see literally no downsides!

This really should have just been one simple service tier.

But, you know,

JIM NEEDS THA MONEEEEZ

You want them to give you all of that stuff for the same price as current PS+? Or do you want them to force everyone to pay more than they do today, even if they don't want the additional stuff? It's one of the two.

Offers absolutely nothing I am interested in.... but maybe useful for people new to the ecosystem.

I think they should just ditch streaming, waste of time.
I agree, I hope this isn't a ploy to raise PSN prices but phasing out the base price in exchange for the other tiers.

Jesus, the drama.

Can people play Sony games on Xbox? That's a weird bubble you're living on.

Meanwhile in the real world Sony keeps selling millions of their own games, keeps buying studios left and right and has games like God of War Ragnarok and Spider-Man 2 in development, plus games like Final Fantasy XVI releasing first on their consoles.

Also..."for free" is a weird thing to say considering gamepass costs over 100 dollars per year.

Sony had basically half of the console market in 2021. With the games they are releasing that won't change any time soon.

Your concern for Sony is touching...but considering their investment in their already owned studios and acquiring new ones, i think you're more concerned then they are.

I'm not "concerned" (I assume you mean to imply disingenuous because of bias - takes one to know one).

I'm just interested in games and business and have an opinion on these significant strategic developments.

It's obvious that Microsoft is going hard for Sony's market share, and I think that's going to be a big challenge for Sony in the next 5 to 10 years. That's all. There's no conspiracy ffs.

How they're doing right now is really not that relevant to that larger strategic landscape.

I mean it is not like they changed the price.
It still the same as you pay today for PS+ or PS+ and PSNow.
They added a new category that is more expensive.

I'm honestly pretty excited. A little bit of a letdown with the PS3 games only via Streaming but those 400 games from PS4 and PS5 plus that PS1, PS2, and PSP Classics got me in. I think it's pretty competitive if you compare it with Gamepass, I know it's not the same but the value proposition it's there. In fact, PS Plus is an excellent service for me, they give me FFVII Remake so...

You think Sony will pay the big bucks for big 3rd party AAA games?
what makes you think they won't? they've done that for third-party exclusives

You heard it here first from Swift_Star Swift_Star , if you aren't in 100% lockstep with Sony business decisions you are a troll. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

And there are a lot of trolls in the PS userbase whenever those PC releases get announced.
there is a lot of trolling going on in this thread and both sides are guilty of doing that here & in other threads

Hahaha I take it you havent looked at the gamepass catalog since the day it dropped right?

I take it you are expecting the 400 to be all AA and AAA titles on PSPlusPlus.

As an FYI just take a look at the PSNow catalog and assume Sony is taking its PS4 games from that catalog plus the 5 theyve listed in the press release.

When did I say that? I said a number of games vs a number of games. Don't add words or extra meaning.

You think Sony will pay for that? when they won't even include ther own 1st party games

There is zero reason for that.

Except for some indie games they want to help or promote.
Did you read the supporting article from GameIndustry?

Of course they will offer games day 1 from 3rd party, they already do on PS Plus.
Do your reading.

1st party will come eventually, this service is launching lads, takes time to build up. How did GP launch?
