Since I have all 3 now I'll give my review of the pleb gaming figures.
Skylanders: cheapest and smallest of the 3. Build quality and paint is great but basic. Go on sale regularly and you can get a 3 pack for $5-10 fairly soon after launch. The premium figures (Swapforce/Giant/etc) tend to hit similar prices as the plain ones too.
Infinity: Middle range of cost, $11/12 atm but Hulk is $17 for some odd reason. Build quality and detail is fantastic, larger than the other 2 (sometimes by a ton) and they really have been designed well. Thor is really impressive with an almost floating cape and all the figures drawn your attention.
Amiibo: Most expensive, mid range size, great minimalist designs but lack the flair of Infinity. Also the suckiest ingame out of the 3.
(reviewer has dozens and dozens of Skylanders, 7 Amiibos, 9 Infinity figures)
I sure hope Target has a good launch price lined up, otherwise I probably won't grab it until later in the year. Getting a cheap copy of LBP3 on Monday too

I was taking my two year old through a video game aisle on Boxing Day and he pointed at the Amiibo display, indicating that he wanted the Mario with the fire coming out of his hands.
I was like sorry you're too young for video games and walked away from the aisle when he began to cry. As much joy as video games have given me over the years, I kind of want to delay their introduction into his life so he can develop other interests and not be completely useless at socially beneficial hobbies (i.e. sports, music) with no way of catching up like I was.
Does that make me a bad parent?

There's some evidence that video games can make kids better learners. If a kid can adjust to the many and varied mechanics of video games, they can gain some confidence in their own ability to pick up new skills in other areas.
If you're asking for opinions, I think the most important thing you can do is learn to limit their time at the one hobby, and in doing so teach them some self control. A lot of parents will tell you that that's necessary anyway, if they watch tv/YouTube for too long, or play video games for too long, or play trains and Lego for too long, it can put kids in shitty moods and make them harder for you to deal with. Video games or not, this is probably a parenting skill you'll have to learn anyway. So you might as well share your passion with him.

Games are good but make sure to mix it up, start from the bottom of the range too. Son spends more time with his Leapster than our WiiU/PS4 since it's more educational.

That's true, guys. Where would half of us be without Mavis Beacon and her typing institute? He has some Leapster stuff already, but it's very simple counting and letter recognition stuff that goes over his head for the moment.
I just don't want him to develop the binging habit like I did (tendency to do things 100% or not at all), finishing the original SMB while failing to develop in other equally important ways.

The 100mbps a sec thing is something that is not on their website but they 'offered' it to me as a new customer at no extra cost (it's normally $20 extra a month). The default cable speeds are like up to 25 mbps.

I had Optus cable broadband for about 15 years and it was solid the whole time. Moved out, am now on ADSL which is a reasonable speed but drops out frequently.
I thought Optus had stopped signing new customers up to cable broadband... for a quite a while there all mentions of cable vanished from their website. It's clearly back now, so I wonder what changed.

It's called a 'Speed Pack', but they appear to have changed the requirement from being cable to fibre only, which is a bit odd. I'm on the 100Mb speed pack, but the upload's not anywhere near 40Mb, so it's probably slightly different. What are your upload speeds like?
Optus Cable is now officially 'NBN', that's what changed.

It really depends on what's available to you. Check if you have NBN or cable at your address. NBN is best due to better upload speed.

If you don't have either, ADSL2+ is the next option. You can get that from anywhere. I don't have an opinion on which ISP is best. Maybe someone else does. Reputation wise, it's TPG for cheap, Internode for good service.
