I haven't watched this show since the end of the first season, which I thought was pretty slow. Has the series picked up steam since then?

What a fucking episode!

crazy fact I learned today on reddit: Captain Flint and Captain Berringer (the leader of the redcoats with that magnificent red beard and mane) are brothers IRL! Even more insane, Dame Maggie Smith (Harry Potter, Downton Abbey) is their mom!!! WHOAH

That's crazy indeed. I didn't know any of that.

Yes, S2 is where it really started to become a great show. I think almost everyone acknowledges S1 was a bit iffy.

They've gone with the black flag approach of "close enough that you could say the details were lost to history" throughout the show

I was saying to myself at the time nothing is going to happen, because Teach died in battle off the coast of Ocracoke Island in NC (during a battle that had nothing to do with Nassau). Boy was I wrong. Reminds me my shock at that one scene in Inglorious Basterds.

That was some savage shit that went down.

Seems they're not adhering to history much. I actually wonder how they're going to end it. I figure that at least blondie will bite it for sure (and most likely Captain Flint).

And with all of these Treasure Island characters in the picture I think I'd like to have a mini-series or something based on the book haha.

That's pretty neat.

That keelhauling scene with Teach was one of the most brutal and intense things I've seen in a while. Fuck, I'm totally worn out after that and the tension was amazing. What a way to go. Overall a damn good episode through and through.

Haven't rewatched the episode yet, but did anyone else catch Captain Berringer telling Eleanor that pirates killed an 8 year old girl on the Underwood estate? Also I think at some point Captain Flint said that Billy Bones controlled the Underwood estate.

That seemed to conflict with what we saw - namely both groups of pirates left the estate as the militia approached so presumably its back under the control of the plantation groups, and second I thought specifically the mom and kid were spared by Flint (the nanny slave takes the gun away from the woman).

The only thing I can think of is that either Billy fought the militia off with his group and took the camp and murdered all the non slaves, or the slave owners killed everyone to make it look like the pirates did?

Either way I just don't see how things don't go to pure shit for the rest of the slaves on the island, the plantation owners are going to be deadly afraid of pirates attacking their camp and freeing the slaves so I just don't see how they don't kill everyone :(

He told Max that they'd killed the girl. I think he was trying to push her for info and decided to lie about the Underwoods. Unless I'm forgetting something, they didn't kill the family.

I'm glad they've never messed around with the opening credits to the show. Best ones on tv currently.

That moment after the Executive Producers names are shown and you see the title Black Sails along with the man and the skeleton reaching for the sail atop the mast with that pitch in the music. Oh man, everytime it does things to me I can't explain.

Brilliant episode, like everyone else, I thought that particular sequence was superbly done. Sadness leading to confusion leading to realisation and you have to watch it happen again and again.

I'm not that surprised to hear that the actor behind Berringer is also the real life brother to Flint! When I first saw the S4 trailer I thought it was Flint doing the 'Dark times for dark men' monologue.

That was such an awesome episode. Teach's death was brutal. The whole thing worked to speak about both him and Rogers I thought. I did expect Blackbeard to do more... stuff on the show I guess. The ending to the episode was incredible too.

Yeah he didn't have any epic or really memorable moments. I kept expecting him to do something bad ass but it never happened.

Just 3 episodes and is already better than the latest season of vikings(which was good too)
But this is in a complete different level right now

What an episode !, the fact nobody is talking about this show is just a crime.

It's Game of Thrones level of production and quality.

also, "Billy is smart"..

Why on earth did Rackham surrender his far superior ship? Yes yes I know Anne was on the sloop - but he condemned all of his men for that...

And to those talking above about the opening credits - yep love them. Great music and visuals

Agreed. Not sure why they decided to board the sloop. Just keep hitting it with cannon until it sank. Boom. Problem solved.

Well, it's pretty clear they have no intention of slowing down for even one episode this season.

EPISODE 4 SPOILERS
Talk about a brutal hour of TV. Anne and Jack continue to be MVPs but those fight club scenes were hard to watch. Eleanor was the star of this one though. I liked that we got to see her decided to just put an end to all of this fighting once and for all. And now we have a new faction rising up, I wonder how that'll play out.

So they were trying to imply that Thomas is alive at that labor camp, right?
(ep4)

That's what I was wondering. The way they introduced and dropped the plot point about the existence of the camp and Silver prodding Flint with it makes me think it'll be part of something huge.

Goddamn, I was not expecting a certain plot point to come up again. This freakin' show.
Considering the reoccurring theme of Black Sails seems to basically be 'the reports of my death are greatly exaggerated' (especially in regards to Flint), even bringing up a chance that Thomas Hamilton could be alive... oh, man. I'd always thought it was kind of in the realm of possibility, but I'd ultimately decided I was being too optimistic. There were quite a few S3 moments where I was going 'huh' (especially with Silver being told Thomas' name, Rogers with his Thomas mentions). Thomas not showing up in Flint's Death visions was really disappointing at the time, but could make sense in retrospect, especially with some of Miranda's dialogue. I guess Lord Hamilton travelling under an assumed name could potentially play into all of it, too.

Thomas being alive could lead to some really interesting conflict with Flint, though with only six episodes left there isn't a lot of time to do anything with it. Toby Stephens and Rupert Penry-Jones had a great rapport, I was always disappointed Thomas' screentime seemingly got cut back. I don't want to get too optimistic - as again, not a lot of screentime to do a lot with it - but it's odd to bring it up and no do anything with it.

EDIT: Props to cleverer people than me with better awareness of literature -
I haven't read Treasure Island since I was a kid, I had no recollection that Flint died in Savannah, which seems to be in the vicinity of, well, 'north of Spanish Florida'. Well, shit.

Just watched ep 3+4 back to back.

Damn.

Same, as a coastal NC native it annoys me somewhat that the show isn't very historically accurate, but it's so damn good the annoyance is fleeting. There is no other action/drama on the TV that can compare to this. I'm really looking forward to owning all 4 seasons so I can marathon the whole thing from start to finish down the road.

Fantastic Episode, just great.
- Poor Anne.

- Hamilton might be alive? If Flint, out of all characters, gets a happy ending then hats of Black Sails. I would not have seen that coming in a million years.

- Slave army heading for Nassau. Just when you thought you knew where all the players are.

I agree poor Anne - but we didn't see her die (it cut just as she was struggling for breath) so hopefully she is fine...

I'm pretty sure Anne is still alive. She might be on her last legs, but I feel like we would've seen more if she died. I'm worried for her and Jack though...

It's great watching a TV show that's constantly firing on all cylinders.

Not sure I understand the move at the end though.

This show never lets up. The fight with Anne. The teases about Hamilton. The slave uprising. Not sure where things are headed after that ending either. What a great episode.

Show is still great.

Not at all a fan of how things went down with Blackbeard though. What a waste of a fantastic actor. Wasted for what? Just seemed a pointless death and made Blackbeards whole character arc weak as hell.

Ep 4 was fantastic though. Silver's character progression from season 1 is simply amazing.

Yep I agree about Blackbeard. He shouldn't have had the man of war - he should have had his own awesome ship and great crew etc.

Having said that - the way he survived his 'death' was incredible - showed his strength. Rackham wouldn't have even made it past the cannon holes!

Also didn't like how Rackham surrendered the man of war - he could have blasted that sloop to kingdom come if he wanted to. Instead he sacrificed his men so he could get his lady back...

Same for Teach - why go in on little boats. Use your man of war to blast the sloop to kingdom come...

Agreed on all points. I definitely didn't like the way they handled that. Why not sink the governor's sloop? Problem solved. Could have blasted that thing down to splinters.

And yes Blackbeard wound up being less interesting than he should've been. Ah well. We have Flint and Silver and Charles Vane sucking up all the awesome.

Only caught up on the first two episodes of S4 so far, but they were great. This show continues to get better and better.

Also, Ray Stevenson is a joy to watch and I wish he was in this more (already read the spoilers so I know what happens sadly lol).

The Man of War vs Sloop thing definitely played out clunky and sticks out like a sore thumb in an otherwise great season thus far

- Hulu Acquires Starz’s ‘Black Sails’
As part of its deal with Lionsgate, Hulu has acquired subscription streaming rights to Seasons 1-3 of the original series starting today, as well as the fourth and final season following the finale.

Black Sails takes place 20 years prior to Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic, Treasure Island, and follows the most feared pirate of the day, Captain Flint (Toby Stephens). The 10-episode fourth season, which focuses on the pirates at war in the West Indies, will bring the storyline to a conclusion with the series finale on April 1.

The first three seasons averaged 3.6 million multiplatform viewers per episode, according to Starz. The series has also been nominated for multiple Emmy Awards, winning for Outstanding Sound Editing, and Outstanding Special and Visual Effects in a Supporting Role.

Great line of the week - "You must see by now that when you wage war on the world, the world fights back." Every characters arc has basically been that story.

I have a bad feeling Madi is gonna die, and Max is gonna be the wife of Long John Silver in Treasure Island. The two of them working together opened the series in episode 1, and I think we'll see something similar in the finale.

Crazy to think there are STILL six more episodes, feels like the story could be wrapped up in one or two more episodes. Wonder how they are going to stretch it all out, would be amazing if they do a twist and the last two episodes are the beginning of Treasure Island or something.

Hope Anne isn't dead :(

Hopefully Black Sails on Hulu gives the show more exposure. What a rare gem it is.

Yeah, that was an amazing line. As you said, it plays into all the character arcs on the show. There were so many good lines this week - Flint's 'violence and wailing'/'no daylight between us' lines, Silver's 'special kind of hell choosing between two irreplaceable things' line, Anne's 'any man', Flint's meta commentary on the show itself re: the story becoming clear, Eleanor's thoughts on Nassau, etc.

I keep going back and forth with Max and Madi being Silver's wife. I really, really don't want Madi to get fridged fo Silver's motivation, but I really like the parallel of the Urca gold starting with Flint/Silver/Max/Billy, and that connection carrying over to Treasure Island in various forms. I'd prefer Madi leaves Silver to protect her people over her dying. I really enjoyed the dynamic between her, Flint, and Silver this episode, too, kinda got some James/Thomas/Miranda vibes.

Live, Queen Anne, live! I'm not looking forward to losing more characters. When did I become so fond of such a bunch of assholes?

Flint is so good. His brother was too. Toby Stephens (and his brother) needs to be in more quality stuff. So good to watch.

Billy is an absolute beast. How fucking huge is he now?

On the topic of who becomes Silvers wife, at first I was certain it would be Madi, but after Billy's talk with Silver about Flints actions causing harm to those other people love, I think she's a goner.
