Captain America: Brave New World | Official Trailer

So this movie has a collaboration with Marvel Rivals where they were advertising a spray, a nameplate, and a "mystery costume" for buying tickets through the promotional site. People were speculating it was either an exclusive Falcon skin on Cap or an exclusive Red Hulk skin for Hulk

Yesterday, a day before the movie's release, they finally revealed that it was neither! It turns out it's just some existing skin in the game (still haven't revealed which), and people are pissed.

They're mixed. Most are saying it's enjoyable. Some are saying it's "bad" with caveats... Some are saying it's great both with and without caveats. Here's some of what I mean ...
Wow you werent kidding, they literally cover the whole gambit from bad to great, with the majority falling inbetween. this does not seem to be the film to bring the MCU back to relevance.

Nothing can at this point as in the first three phases they used the most popular characters at their peak. And it won't be topped - Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Black Panther of that era were at their peak.

The issue that Marvel is facing - and has not resolved - they have been investing too much time into old characters without hitting the mainstream with new ones. And for a lot of people they still associated Marvel with 90s cartoons worldwide (as comics were not available everywhere either).

Sounds about right. I'm not a comic book or Marvel fan, but I enjoyed the phases, mainly because of RDJ as Iron Man. He made it work for me.

I’d say that’s way off. Spider-man and X-men (which are the two characters/teams that weren’t in the MCU for most of its first decade) were the only two 90’s Marvel cartoons with significant legs, the others like Iron Man and Incredible Hulk only lasted two seasons.

In fact, Iron Man was facing massive irrelevancy in the comics at the time. They didn’t even bother putting him in any of the primary fights or the secondary fights of Marvel vs DC, that’s how bad it was.

The Crossing was a story arc that badly damaged the character’s reputation with some baffling decisions: let’s make Kang brainwash Tony into becoming a serial killer, and then the Avengers grab a 19 year old Tony and have him kill the original Tony only before that evil, older Tony damages young Tony’s heart because we can’t have Tony Stark without that detail! Now young Tony, who gets told about how his parents will die tragically and all the other awful things he’ll have to endure in the future except those things happened to the older Tony and it is the future, I mean, present, AGH!!!!, anyway, young Tony is the new Iron Man, and the original died a brainwashed murderer…….yaaaaaaaaaay.

The ONLY good thing about the Onslaught Saga is by killing off this new Tony, they could now just have Nathaniel Richards bring Tony back with Nathaniel’s insane powers but with how Nathaniel remembers Tony so we get the original Tony without all the bullshit….though The Crossing and everything is still canon so good luck trying to figure that out, or just try not to think about it because simply mentioning The Crossing will make any Marvel reader groan.

Then the Civil War comic just couldn’t resist itself and ruined Tony AGAIN by making him a super villain (the movie “adaptation” ignored this and all the other flaws of the comic). And this was 2006.

Then two years later in 2008, Marvel Studios took this character with a short lived cartoon and some awful character handling in the comics in the prior two decades and made magic happen. Iron Man was NOT in a good spot 90’s-2007, and it was all the filmmakers and such who made the film successful.

Heck, almost NO ONE outside of dedicated comic readers knew who the Guardians of the Galaxy were pre-2014. Marvel films definitely do not have their success impacted much by how well known or well handled the characters are in the comics or cartoons.

RDJ had crazy amount of charisma to elevate tier 2 character like Iron Man to the top tier.

The point is that I know who is Captain America, Spider Man, Iron Man (and Mandarin) and Hulk are. And did not know who was Ant man, GoTG, etc. And I am probably even a bit more knowledgeable than a mainstream. Also in the SM cartoon they brought a lot of characters from other universe in the last arc.

I don't even know what are you talking about here 🤣

I would argue that GoTG success has all to do to do with the first and second phases as at that time "anything marvel" would bring people to theaters. Even Ant-man did do something. Like you literally had banger after banger - Iron Man -> Thor -> Captain America -> Avengers -> Iron Man -> Thor -> Captain America (though it leads to another point that I mentioned they relied too much on the same cast).

Infinity War and Endgame is a closure to the MCU for a lot folks at this point (like me). I have no idea about new captain america (never read a comics), I have zero knowledge about Eternals or Shangi-Shi etc. I know Fantastic Four though.

Reading the first reviews from people who saw it today yeah, nothing exciting to put it politely.
And of course Marvel shills die hard fans will still love it.

-a single individual’s knowledge does not necessarily represent the knowledge of the general public. Also, yes, Spider-man TAS had guest appearances, but I highly doubt it’s what most remember the show for, when you ask people what they remember about Superman TAS, few are going to say, “hey, remember that episode where he met the Flash?” for example

-there’s these things called comic books that all the Marvel, and DC, movies are based on. You should look into them, they have pictures and everything! :messenger_winking:

-Ant-man’s films actually did decent numbers, nothing great, in terms of box office. Dr. Strange’s first movie did better in comparison, but Guardians 1, and 2 did even better, beat both Ant-man 1 and Dr Strange 1 at the box office despite being generally less well known

Again, it was the individual movie’s quality that generally mattered, not how well known or handled the original source material of a character or team was beforehand

-not really sure how it works as a closure. Dr. Strange, Guardians 2, and Spider-man Homecoming left several notable plot threads unresolved. Phase 3 was the end of the Infinity Saga of the MCU, but it was clearly not the end of the MCU as a whole

Again, a single individual’s knowledge is not a reliable source. Also, why does it matter if you know Shang-Chi or Eternals? The Guardians of the Galaxy did not make one appearance in any of the 90’s Marvel cartoons, and you admitted yourself you don’t read comics, so you were just as clueless about the Guardians before seeing their first movie as you would be seeing any of the more recent characters/teams.

I think people remember non-resolved quest line with Mary Jane 🤣

Less known than Ant-Man? Doubt.

I don't think that many people care about plot lines in those movies (I personally don't remember how those movies ended). No way Home was great. The build up towards Infinity War was great, the ending was more or less satisfactory. The main driver of MCU - RDJ - had its closure.

-they remember MJ, I don’t think that many remember how weird it got at the end

-Ant-Man was a founding Avenger, come on now.

-again, your personal view can’t just automatically represent the general view. If Endgame was such a closure for the MCU, why did Spider-Man NWH, Strange 2, Thor 4, Black Panther 2, and Guardians 3 still make a lot of money?

I think that MJ ending left a lot of vietnam flashbacks

Really? Had no idea :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Spider-Man aside, all other movies had some inertia left in them - with BP2 especially, though I think post Thor 4, the next Thor movie won't perform that great at all.

Wolverine success, for example, is due to Deadpool and in a lot ways - due to Logan for example (which is another legacy character), part of X-Men and basically SM of X-Men or Iron Man MCU of X-Men at this point.

yikes, I have low hopes, but thought it at least be better than Thor 4 or BP2 in the current area of Marvel movies

I think you mean "Jon Favreau took this character" as HE was the one who fought for RDJ and hammered something wonderful from what had otherwise been in dev hell for over a DECADE.

Then Jon went and did it AGAIN with The Mandalorian.

Why that guy isn't running Lucasarts, if not the ENTIRE Disney studio system, is beyond me.

Plus he has a frat boy streak which is why Disney bought Lucasarts in the first place, to appeal to boys, and Kathleen Kennedy has spent the last 15 years or so trying to stomp out, tanking her company along the way.

No. I've been over this MANY times about why that's a bad idea. It even was a bad idea in the comics... Which is why they quickly brought Steve back.
Most ideas in superhero comics are bad ones and the OG hero almost always comes back. Our own inside man ManaByte ManaByte says they are gonna bring Steve back (recasted). Anthony Mackie is OLDER than Chris Evans, so if both those guys are retired from the role in favor of a younger (and cheaper) actor what's it say about Falcon as Cap?

Personally, if Cap4 somehow BLOWS THE FUCK UP to a billion + and the whole world is in love with Sam as Cap and they can lock the actor down, I doubt they would go forward with any narrative to replace him as Cap. Chris was only in the role for 10 years and Mackie has been Falcon for that long as well, so they were both kinda long in the tooth in Hollywood years. Hard to imagine Mackie doing it for ANOTHER 10 years as Cap but the MCUs strange reluctance to recast the same role (versus multiverse shenanigans) kinda forces them to shake up the roster I guess.

Now if Cap4 craters, and it doesn't look like it will, kinda "ho-hum" at worst, then there will have to be some serious thought as what to do with Cap. I suppose they can shift focus if Thunderbolts produces a hit or FF4. The nebulous nature of the path forward allows them to pivot if anything strikes out too hard (as they've already shown by dumping everything Kang related).

Hate to blow up your dreams of Sam not being Cap anymore, but they’ll probably handle it like they did in the comics post-Secret Wars where Sam is Cap and Steve Rogers is as well.

This is gonna be a fun thread to revisit in 5 years or so when all this stuff shakes out.

Secret Wars is in May 2027. That’s the soft reboot. Two years away. Doomsday is May 2026 and Secret Wars is a year later.

They start filming them next month.

So far the only post Secret Wars movies are Shang-Chi 2 and the Russo’s X-Men if they decide to sign the deal for it.

Lol, I mean this is happening right now. At the moment, the rating is even lower, already 43/100. The funniest part is that even jurnous like Screen Rant are tearing this movie apart

Nevertheless, I think Anthony Mackie is a good actor, and I liked his role in The Avengers. It feels like he was forced to take the lead role in this movie. And how can the VFX in the trailer be so bad?

*sigh* Yet another MCU slop. Disney need to put MCU on ice for five years until they've figured out how to write interesting stories again. Because it's really embarrassing at this point.

Delayed, all of them.

Shangi-chi 2 will never happen.

My predictions.

Holy shit. Across 43 reviews too. At least it's rated higher than Morbius, Madame Web and Kraven. lol

The initial MCU story arc was great cause it felt consistent and lead up to something that fans felt invested in. But its success has now caused everything that came after to feel like a rushed to theaters cash grab to try and replicate that magic. I genuinely don't think they will and I'm actually okay with that, it was fun while it lasted.
