I love DOOM. Period. So, full blown bias.
I loved DOOM Eternal's over-the-top power fantasy perspective, the really hard lean into Evil Dead-like vibes and territory. But at the same time, I loved the more grounded and less "zany" vibe of 2016. 2016 also felt like a "full package" where DOOM Eternal didn't at all. I remember getting 2016 and being SO hyped for a new DOOM game, but also for the fact that it was a AAA title that had a campaign, multiplayer, and a level creator. It gave me old FPS vibes and it made me SO damn happy. All that it was missing was coop.
DOOM Eternal just had a campaign, and that asymmetrical multiplayer that no one cared for. I mean, launch week I couldn't even find matches on PC, lol.
DOOM 2016's overall vibe felt a bit darker and more serious, which I also love. While Eternal's felt more tongue in cheek and fun.
I loved both games. But I definitely think I loved 2016 more for many reasons.
Really excited about The Dark Ages, but I'm not gonna lie, there being no multiplayer or any other content kinda sucks. I guess something could still be announced, but I'm not betting on it. On one hand, sure, focus on the campaign and make it amazing, I'm all for that. But it's just the fact that it's DOOM, the game that ignited and carried the torch of online multiplayer and coop. Hell, even DOOM 3 had multiplayer. (I loved DOOM 3, but you know what I mean, I'm sure.) It feels weird to just not have it at all. Especially when they didn't do it in Eternal because Hugo said he didn't want to take away Quake Champions' spotlight (lmao). Well, that spotlight has been long gone, and we still didn't get it.
While I love DOOM, and I never want to see less DOOM, I do think we need a new Quake. Preferably a reboot that leans into the Lovecraftian style. I'd kill for them to go back to that, focus on a campaign, coop, and multiplayer and bring it back better than ever.
