DOOM 2016 at the time of it's release was one of the best games ever made. Eternal might be better it doesn't have the initial wow factor that 2016 had.

I prefer 2016 tbh. I love both, but find that Eternal is a wee bit too "Cartoony". I find myself replaying 2016 quite often, every time I install it I end up going through the whole campaign, I cant with Eternal for some reason, it just doesn't hook me in the same way.

I prefer Doom Eternal to Doom 2016 because of the Desintegration of enemies and because i've read Doom 2016 is badly balanced, basically you only need the Super Shotgun but i don't know if thats true.

While a lot of people loved Eternal (myself included), I feel it's pretty telling for them to go back to more grounded gameplay. Makes me feel like that feedback was loud and clear.

Eternal is the better game, no question. It's a sequel that refined and iterated, there would be something very wrong if it wasn't better 4 years later. But Doom 2016 is still the right answer. It took *the* iconic fps, rebooted it for a new generation, and stuck the landing.

Gameplay wise 2016 feels like the training wheels version of Eternal.

However everything around it was better in 2016, they just went too far into fantasy cartoon non-sense and completely gave up trying for any kind of immersion in Eternal. They perfect example was how items and upgrades were acquired in 2016 compared to Eternal. In 2016 they're placed on dead bodies so a nice quick, but cool animation plays of the slayer ripping them off the bodies, meanwhile Eternal it's literally just Fortnite pick-ups with zero reason or context.

2016 by a million miles.

Eternal isn't bad but compared to 2016 it sucks. They tried too hard with it. 2016 was perfection.

For me 2016 edges it out due to being closer to a traditional Doom experience while Eternal was a bit too restrictive with forcing the player into a more rigid "correct" style of play.

And if you want to go into some extraneous stuff, 2016's spite for it's own story was much better than Eternal's geek fantasy, no slowdown goo, no swimming and 2016's whack DM mode was still better than Battlemode.

Despite that, still loved both games and keep returning to each for a fix.

Crazy at about 300 votes in and 70% Prefer Doom 2016.

I agree with the people who said it was too frantic. The weapon switching and frantic pace kinda made it unenoyable at times. Just because something is more difficult does not make it better.

This is a tough one; they are my GOTY respectively for 2016 and 2020.
I think I'd give the tiniest edge to Eternal as I liked the greater mobility and the more over the top and 90s-esque look to the weapons and demons.
Both absolutely rock though and are for my money among the best FPS games ever made.

Eternal was so good that iD themselves didn't even try to follow it up. Just a streak of divine inspo. 2016 was good, but hard to go back to after clearing the Master Levels and becoming a harrier jet.

I prefer Eternal. I really loved the variety of environments, and I think Eternal just did a better job at the badass power fantasy vibe. That opening sequence where they’re calling in Doom Guy to save the whole damn earth by himself just puts a big grin on my face every time.

2016 still kicks ass though.

Been playing both of them again this week and Eternal feels so arcady. At one place you have this giant set pieces to really immerse you in this universe and then there's colorful sequence series and Mario portals and jumping mechanics.

Doom 2016 almost did everything perfectly. Dark Ages will be one hell of a game.

Eternal was truer to the original formula but had too much shooting for me. Liked 2016 a lot more. Felt Doom-themed Metroid.

I'd say that Eternal was more like Quake 3 Arena. 2016 was somewhere between Doom 2 and Quake 2 for me.
Dark Ages looks like The Most Doom Game Ever.

Console/controller players and Oldheads (no offense) are the only people who think doom 2016 is better than eternal

2016 is a good game, not even close to eternal though

DOOM 2016 I completed at least 5 times.
I put eternal down twice and have yet to return.

That says a lot
Yes it does. For instance I can infer that you play fps games with a joystick. I can also infer that you would probably enjoy a version of a doom fps on a mobile phone. I can also infer that you probably enjoy eating Cheetos while playing ur games. I can go on

I hated Eternal, 2016 was peak. Glad to see more people seeing the light, I remember back then you'd be seen as a heinous criminal for suggesting Eternal was bad. Only thing I liked about Eternal was Mick Gordon's The Only Thing They Fear Is You. The whole reason why I'm looking forward to The Dark Ages is because they seem to be going back to something closer to 2016, though Mick's soundtracks will sorely be missed.
There's no "people seeing the light" . We are just outnumbered by inept gamers who just want games where you have to spam A to brute force open doors or lift trees out of your path and that's why most games are completely gimped that take all brain power out of the equation

This is how the game was designed to be played. It's a masterpiece in design. However, I understand It's not for most people, and that's okay, but please stop trying to disparage games that you don't understand

I have been replaying 2016 and Eternal lately and man, I don’t think I will ever play through 2016 again.

It’s so boring and easy (this is on ultra violence btw) There’s little reason to ever switch your weapons, not a single enemy poses any real threat, and the lack of deformation/damage to enemies is very noticeable after Eternal.

Playing Eternal again has been a breath of fresh air. It feels like a feature complete game thanks to all the extra mechanics. There’s reasons to use your entire arsenal and not just shotgun your way through the game. The enemy deformation is really cool, enemy variety is also better.

I’m seeing lots of comments about Eternal saying “it’s too fast” “it’s too frenetic” ect, type of messages. To the people saying that, do you not play other hard/fast paced games? I don’t want to sound obnoxious, but it does indeed reek of the dreaded “skill issue” to me.

The power fantasy that Eternal provides is more satisfying because of the fact that you have to earn it. In 2016 you just destroy everything, hardly any skill required. The enemies barely attack you.

I definitely play fps games with a controller, because its not hard.
Imagine playing anything on a phone outside of card games. You got that wrong.
I don't eat and play. Also got that wrong.
Don't bother going on, you're on a losing streak.

2016 was mind blowing at the time. The glory kills and the shooting mechanics in a game of modern era felt incredible, especially after waiting 10 plus years for it to happen again.

Eternal came out a bad time. I was pretty stressed with covid and all the going ons in the world. Returned to it a few years ago and had a similar feeling I did to 2016. I was blown away by the combat when I gave it time and it's the closest thing to adrenaline that games can offer. The story is a tad much and loses the absurdist humor 2016 was afforded but all of the Heaven using Hell to generate argent energy is metal AF. I wish they had more levels there.

I like both for different reasons. If I was to recommend them, I'd say definitely play 2016 first then Eternal.
They do slightly different things. Eternal is faster paced with more mechanics. I still prefer much of 2016's demon models and I think Eternal is a bit too showy/flashy.

Play it on Nightmare.

I thought 2016 was good, waited eagerly for Eternal, downloaded it, never played past the third level or so, didn't get stuck or anything just completely lost interest in it....too much mario castle fireball platforming, too many heavyhanded mechanics, also too much story. The game explaining how to do tons of shit in order to play correctly was the antithesis of 2016 where doom guy knocked over the computer that was about to guide him through his task.

Easily 2016. Eternal was just a chore to play. By the second half of the game, I was like: "well, I've bought it and spent already so many hours on it, might as well finish." Didn't have fun at all.

They actually remind me of the original DOOM vs. DOOM II.

DOOM was slower paced, a bit more exploring and atmosphere. DOOM II was all about crazy level design, tons of demons and more DOOM. I like both. Depends on my mood.
