Eternal made me feel like a hyper skilled player when I got into the flow and overcame the challenge.

2016 made me have fun the whole time.

Different flavors, both have their place. I would vote 2016 because it’s something anyone can enjoy. Eternal is not fun if you don’t lean into how the game wants you to play it.

No one shall be brought before our LORD David Bowie without the true and secret knowledge of the Photoshop. For in that time, so shall He appear.
If I had to pick one, I’d say 2016. It was the perfect length and had the right amount of exploration. I really, really love the gameplay of Eternal, but for some reason it just never clicked in the same way for me. I still haven’t even beaten Eternal, actually.

eternal is kinda ass with the complicated gameplay tbh.
The game literally presents you with straight forward tutorials step by step as you progress. Not one single thing, in and of itself, is difficult to mechanically perform.

Now, if you have trouble remembering those things, isn’t that really on you, and not the game?

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.

cool down.

2016 is great shooter.

But kinda ordinary up against Eternal.

I think Dark Ages is also going to be divisive with its gameplay loop cause its not a straight up shooter. I remember seeing health drops or parry or melee.

Well shit.......never knew this was such a divisive topic. Still haven't played Eternal myself.

Don't bother, unless you like Doom games where you're forced into melee to scrounge meager ammo drops from downed enemies.

I think Dark Ages is also going to be divisive with its gameplay loop cause its not a straight up shooter. I remember seeing health drops or parry or melee.

But they're ditching a lot of Eternal's mechanics and control scheme. That will go a long way, IMO.

Doom 2016 loses simply due to load times. Was fucking brutal on my ps4. Dying in the game was such a pain in the ass, and those challenge areas. So much loading. Eternal has higher res textures and loads a lot faster. So it’s objectively better in that respect. Gameplay opinion tends to vary a lot, I personally loved the changes and had no problem adjusting. And I suck at games, I’m old and use weed for pain management. I’m pretty much at the bottom of the list in black ops 6 matches, although the matchmaking matches me with really good keyboard and mouse users for some reason. I mean what the fuck, I use s a controller and suck why are you matching me with those people? What was I talking about again…oh yeah Doom Eternal I loved much more.

Eternal

It's my GOAT FPS Campaign. It wasn't pick up and play and you definitely had to learn how it wanted you to play, but that sense of pride and accomplishment, nothing comes close to how it felt going through the base game, both DLCs and that fuckin fantastic ending

Doom 2016 was fun but boringly easy! You could literally finish the game with one weapon, it's fucking brain dead as far as skill.

The added complexity of the gameplay loop where you have to think more on your feet and really keep moving in Eternal is the very definition of an arena shooter. It's an ARENA SHOOTER!! It's like complaining that a souls game is shit because it's too hard and you had to start from the start.

Eternal is the single greatest shooter ever made. The control and pace is unmatched.
Anyone with any real love for shooters or should I say is their No.1 genre should see Eternal by design, especially as an arena shooter, the best, if not one of the best ever made in history of gaming. People who prefer Doom 2016 just don't get it.

Eternal for me but both are great. Eternal is exhilarating. Plus the unlimited unlocks, traversal, finding hidden things, etc.

2016. Not a fan of Eternals colour palette or the more cartoony redesigns of the Demons, much prefer 2016 in that regard. Doom TDA looks like a step in the right direction. They really need to go full horror again.

2016 gives you more freedom to tackle enemies however you want. Eternal wants you to fight enemies in a specific way due to enemy weakpoints and certain weapons being tailor made to tackle those weakpoints. I just remember having to constantly fly around the battlefield with my meathook while constantly swapping between different guns depending on the enemy. Personally I enjoyed 2016's simplicity more.

Both had their flaws, but I enjoyed 2016 more.

Eternal strayed too far from the original vision in both gameplay and visuals.

EDIT: and keep the rainbow colored pickups the hell away from my doom. I wanna search the around the map for my health and ammo.

Doom 2016 every time, i didn't like Eternal, too much like a MP game, death match arena to arena with constant wall traversal, i didn't like the combat either or the repetitive ammo refill mechanic, Doom 2016 had the Doom atmosphere and a far better SP story immersion.

I enjoyed both games, but Eternal was just a bit too much on every front.

Too much upgrade stuff, systems and complicated enemies.

There was so much stuff to think about while in combat that you pretty much had to rely on the slow motion mechanics. Which took the pacing out of the combat.

If they really want to go back to the ‘Doom feel’ in Dark Ages then they should remove the slow motion abilities.

Eternal.

Doom 2016 was good, but I kind of got weary of the arenas over and over again with each wave being a higher tier. Eternal is more dynamic with set pieces. They are generally shorter and mix it up more. It feels less like an arena.

Eternal has a higher learning curve and you need to use your complete arsenal. You need to get into the zone with this one, by then it elevates above 2016 for me. Wasn't a fan of the arbitrarily low ammo reserves though, forcing you to chainsaw fodder every 10 seconds.

Sometimes Eternal mechanics felt like you need StarCraft 2 APM.
The gun switching, dodging, aiming and jump-ledging was just too much.

16 is an awesome game, Eternal amps everything on it 3-4 times but they kind of overblown it sometimes.

Both are recommended but my recommendation would play 16 first and then see if Eternal is your kind of sequel.
(imho Eternal has that "dark souls 2 vibe")

To me Doom 2016 was just balls to walls fun. Eternal felt like work. I assume it's favored by people who wish every game was a fucking soulsborne.

Hated Eternal at first. But then it clicked into place. It was a struggle, but ended up appreciating the changes.
