Doom 3 not until October afterall?

I just babelfished Jeux-france.com

Activision has just published the jacket of Doom III on PC. Concerning the date of exit, nothing official, even if the last rumours affirm that the play from now on is finished. The great American sites of distribution announce as for them an exit in October. Patience...

If the game is finished, why wait until october? Could they wait for the xbox version to get ready? grr...

They need to release early. A Halloween date would be cute, for a scary game, but there is just too much that late in the season.

If they go with this August release date they will pull a ton of sales as the first "big" release.

I don't know where the hell they're getting their info. "The great America sites of distribution" (EB and Gamestop) are both saying August 3rd.

Halloween would make more sense (as much as it sucks ass for us) - It has an obvious tie in with "spooky Halloween" and more importantly, it's closer to the holiday shopping season - release it in August and it may be "forgotten" by the time the holiday blitz starts... IMO of course.

Release it in October, and it may be "forgotten" by all the great titles. Don't get me wrong.. Doom III looks great (graphically), but I imagine it will get overlooked if it releases to close to HL2 on the PC.

That fine for the XBox (which needs more time for graphics and control tuning anyways), but Doom and PC doesn't need holidays. The sooner they release it, the more days in 2004 it'll sell.

And I agree with the above post. If HL2 and Doom 3 are released together, only one is being purchased at date of release and that's HL2 (for me).

If I were ID, and I released beside HL2.. I would be horribly worried about pirating. :( As sad as it is, HL2 will be purchased by people due to online MP and the bajillion mods it will have (presumably). If DOOM3 is released anywhere near the same time it could greatly increase the amount of pirating.

It's sad, but true. :\

You need to make more of an effort to live up to your name. Only a raving loon would purchase two brilliant products in one day. One would go mad deciding what game to play first and when to play the other one. :)

No matter when released, both are mine on the day of release. I am a crazy man.

Very good point. I'm too lazy to deal with all the non-sense that's required to be a pirate, but that's an angle I didn't even consider in my post. I was just thinking I'm not paying retail to have two games sitting on the desk when HL2 will get my attention and Doom 3 could possibly be gotten cheaper after I finished HL2 (Sales or ebay).

Wow, I just read the PC Gamer review...

It sounds extremely impressive, actually. Nothing like a typical ID single player romp (which were always very straight-forward, simplistic games). Heh, it almost seems to have more in common with Half-Life than Doom. It actually sounds like a reall good game, and not just a graphics fest (like Far Cry was). I'm suprised that ID put so much effort into crafting such an experience.

We'll see, though. I really do hope this releases soon. It would be a good thing for gamers and a good thing for ID/Activision. As noted above, Doom 3 is primarily a single player game...and as a result, releasing too near another ultra hyped PC game (with both a great single player and multiplayer mode) could result in additional piracy. However, if this game is released in August, starving PC gamers are MUCH more likely to run out and buy this ASAP.

I'm too lazy to deal with all the non-sense that's required to be a pirate, but that's an angle I didn't even consider in my post.

Well, these days, piracy is EXTREMELY easy (sadly). Grabbing a torrent couldn't be easier...

They really should stay clear of HL2.

Off-topic, but considering I expect this game August 3rd, am I the only one excited about Last Man Standing Multiplayer? Given what we know (That multiplay is gonna be very tactical with light and dark playing a huge role), this mode has really got me excited. The tension could be outstanding even in multiplayer.

Edit: True about torrent. But there's also viruses a'hoy with this kind of stuff and I like my computer to be running trouble free for long stretches of time. I don't mind performing necessary maintenance, but once things are set up, I expect to have the computer running months on end with no time wasting. It's just not worth those hassles for me (Always laugh when you see a thread where a person has 20 viruses on their computer. Hmm. Wonder how those got there.)

The move to making deathmatch more personal and more intense pleases me greatly. Doom3 should certainly carve out a popular niche in online FPS with it's multiplayer. Since the Unreal series already dominates the more traditional arcadey deathmatch id made an incredibly wise desicion here. Hopefully it'll catch on, it certainly makes the game more readibly available for tournament play from the getgo.

Dark: Pirating the game itself is easy, however, playing them online (which Half-life's community THRIVES upon) is not. For Doom, a game that will predominantly be had for it's single-player experience, piracy is a much larger issue.

Err, that's what I said. :p

Doom 3 is a primarily a single player game while HL2 will have a very important multiplayer aspect. My point was that Doom 3 should avoid HL2 as there is a greater chance of someone purchasing HL2 over Doom 3 (and pirating Doom 3) simply because of the multiplayer modes in HL2.

I've decided to pass on upgrading my computer for another 6 months or so to help pay for the shitload of games I'm gonna get for consoles instead...Doom III in October for XBOX will be fine. I really only want the online co-op mode, anyway...that way I can (hopefully) relive all those great memories of Doom co-op with my brother. Of course, there's also Halo 2 online co-op the following month. Co-op rules.

Anyway, if the PC version isn't coming out until October, that can only mean that id & Activision want to make the marketing push easier on themselves with only one release time-frame. And I don't think it would hurt them at all...even with Half-Life 2 and Halo 2 to contend with. Regardless of when it actually surfaces for both platforms, to me, people who have been waiting for a new Doom will get it no matter what.

bah, figured it wont hurt to say it anyway..... being so close to te actual announcement.... dont think i'll get in trouble since it'll be gold by the time any "official" people readit

i work at a EB distribution center and i help mamange all of activisions incoming/outgoing stuff......

we've got the doom 3 boxes, cd (and yes, DVD editions, regardless of what Todd Holleshead said about no DVD version a while back) cases, manuals, and pamphlets allready to go....... The boxes you see for the preorder look NOTHING like the actual retail boxes..... they have a much better image on them and no poly-ated looking hell knight......

Activision gave us word that we should be expecting copies of CD's to fill the orders with within the next 7 days, and they have allready confirmed the game has gone gold, but id software themselves will not state this until thursday or friday of this week

I would LOVE to believe that Doom 3 is nearing release, but there is no hype from Activision. I know this isn't a console game, but you would expect SOMETHING. They are simply way too quiet...

Yeah, I was lucky enough to receive my copy today, so I'll share it with you guys.

1. 6800 is a tad faster than X800 cards. Both run it in full glory

2. The game has four render paths: NV10, NV20, R200, and ARB2. All paths look awesome, even down to a g4mx, but the ARB2 path is the "full package," and is used for the R300+ and Geforce FX+ cards. It does all it's fancy shit in one pass.

3. PCI Express enhances NOTHING.

4. The difference between a 128mb and 256mb card is that the former uses compressed textures whereas the latter only compresses diffuse and specualr maps. In another words, no big deal. However, a 500mb card is needed to run the game in Ultra Quality mode.

5. 512MB is the ideal system total memory. 384 is required, 1GB is nice, but the difference is negligible.

6. Nothing special is included for a 64-bit OS.

7. A 1.5 Ghz processor is the least recommended, but a 2Ghz and above will help since...

8...The sound engine is entirely CPU dependant. Therefore a crappy soundcard works flawlessly. Not to worry, the enfine only uses a "small percentage of cycles, much less than if the engine relied on a soundcard.

9. The only reccommendation regarding faster framerates is to disable to "advanced special effects option." In other words, upgrade if you have problems.

10. They tie it up by providing three levels of "Doom lovin' PC's"

Low-End:
1.5GhzP4 or equivalent
512MB Ram
Geforce4 Ti 4800 or Radeon 9500

Mid-Range:
2.4GhzP4 or equivalent
1GB RAM
Geforce5950 or Radeon 9800 Pro/XT

High_End: Aka Hardware that doesn't exist, but best guess anyway
3.4GhzP4 or AMD equivalent
2GB RAM
GeForce 6800 Ultra or Radeon X800 XT PE.

In conclusion, the game will run well on a variety of hardware, and Rob Duffy, the lead programmer, says that the game looks real good no matter what, and that it will continue to look better as hardware improves. Like all previous id engines, we'll be playing games based on D3 for another five years down the road.

Enjoy everybody!

This from PCGAMER: Bottom line: If Far Cry didnt convince you, then Doom 3 should - the time to upgrade to a next generation 3D chip , or even an all new rig, is now.

For some reason, the fact that he mamanges stuff is scary.

I agree, it has been strangely quiet for this close to a huge release. Who knows! Maybe ID thinks they are a solid sell without a lot of promoting.

Whoa. (2 GB? Christ. We have servers here with less RAM than that.)

They might even be right, but I don't think Activision would take that chance (though one can hope).

I think they would be right, as long as they do release now.. with nothing else huge out there the Doom name will sell from people just seeing it on the shelves. I mean.. normally this would be a HUGE release. It's just kinda getting overshadowed by talk of other titles in what is just an unbelievable year.

Whoever you got that quote wrong is woefully mislead. Aside from the X800 XT PE (It's not out yet, damnit!) I already have those specs. My P4 3.2 is overclocked a mere 200 mhz sadly. I plan on working it harder later on but I don't want to ruin a good thing at the moment since my my work relies on my precious machine.

Man...If Activision is delaying the PC-version just to wait for the xbox-version to be done, I'm going to burn every xbox I see.
