Forza Horizon demo impressions

Played the demo at PAX about 5 times. I like it quite a bit, but will wait a bit on it due to all the games coming out. I also want Need for Speed just slightly more.

*watches the Russian game play video

Looks good, seems to play good.

But my god, the soundtrack. It almost made me throw up on my keyboard. That shit has to die.

you get 3 or so radio stations you can hop between by pressing right on the dpad, rock, D&B and some other style, and of course off.

No head tracking and multiscreen for FOV hack - what's this nonsense?

meh - so I have to wear my neck brace and sit my chin up on the dashboard, seems a bit redundant these days but demo is almost downloaded so will chore through it I guess.

Tbh the soundtrack on the demo works rather well in the context of music to race around to. I currently have the songs on loop and they present the perfect vibe that the game is obviously trying to go for.

Yeah you can tell its kinda scraficed a bit of visual glammer, but overall its pretty good. I think my main issue is with the colours. Things are to dark on the default setting (which is like 60% I think) and things are to washed out/dust like on 100%.

There is nothing in between 60% and 100% ?

Oh. That very missleading, the title instantly makes you think it's a new Forza. Who's making it?

It IS a new Forza its just not a new Forza Motorsport.
Think of it like this:

Forza is the series
Motorsport is the sim side
Horizon is the less sim side.

Its not that hard to understand....when i see posts like this, i start to understand when people say consumers are easily confused.....not a personal attack against you, just an observation.

On Topic

Graphically amazing, the drop to 30fps doesnt bother me at all.....heck my favorite arcade racers of this gen are 30fps (Split/Second, NFS: HP)

Absolutely loving this so far, i dont know if ill day one it though...ive got a very very limited budget.
Heck im still fighting with my choice between DoA and TTT2
Tried both and loved them equally.....but i digress.

Forza Horizon is pretty impressive, i hope it sells well I hope PlayGround Games grows stronger in perparation for Next Gen X.....an Arcade-ish Racer and a Sim Racer during the Launch window would be an epic start for a generation.

I actually thought about that was what ever I tried did not work, any tips?

here are two from the Forza forums

Can't wait to play again tonight

A mate just told me that the vehicle sounds are a little muted compared to FM4..!

Is this true..?

Yes.

Just did a head to head. Took the stock viper on the alps course then went back to horizon. Sound is definitely not as intense, the shifting and the tires are not as loud as F4. The vibration is way to weak as well. The only time it really kicked in was when the plane flew over head in the mustang vs mustang race.

I think part of the reason why it feels like there is no weight is because of the weak vibration. When I was driving the viper in FM4 you would be able to tell when you were loosing it by the vibration on the pad. Not that the viper was prone to slide they are some of the most stable cars, but you can feel a difference. Didn't try it out with my wheel yet will do it later.

But aside from those issues its extremely fun. Driving on that dirt road at night with the ai cars chasing behind was a treat. There is much fun to be had in the coming months.

1st lol moment- Driving in free roam a Ferrari darted in front of me I drove over him and must have gotten 15ft in the air.

Yeah. The majority of the electronic music in the game isn't the type of electronic music I like (I'm more into laid back electronic music like Tycho) but it fits really well with the game.

I like most of the alt. rock songs they have in the game though.

Yeah, I see a lot of people viewing this as "Forza 5" when it isn't.

It should pretty much be treated like a new IP.

A game like this with next gen graphics would be an amazing launch title.

Setting up proper Sound Setup, Downloading now, finally.

I still hope Car Sound can be enjoyable even if inferior to Forza4. I like to tune up those sounds Up while putting the music on low volume.

Anyone tried co-oping?

Can you do it in the Demo? Did not knew that!

It's a sad day indeed...

Horizon would have been the ideal place to 'beef' up the audio rather than to civilize it.
Unless, it's a design decision whereby the stock cars sound 'normal' then are jacked up once upgrades are applied...that would be the shit!
Not holding my breath though....sad day in Forza Land..

Yeah they definitly put the music in the front and the car in the background which is a bit of an insult to the franchise but whatever... I'm sure you can tweak the levels in the menu.

I agree for the rumble too, way too weak except for the plane.

Just a few things:

Car interior is still plain black when in 3rd person, doesn't really bother me too much but you can't see the details (guessing photomode will swap the car model out again like in forza 3 and 4)

Tyre flex is still there, happy about that as it's cool and I was expecting stuff like that to be cut out.

Two other things I noticed.

There's no way to change the hud to KPH instead of MPH in the demo. I imagine it will be possible in the full game.

There's some serious rubberband AI in there. During the DAM challenge I was 3rd a good 500m behind second place and 2 turns before the end both 1st and 2nd places decided to jump on the brakes to enjoy the scenery.

Hopefully many of the environmental effects can be tweaked to perfection in the full game, along with the vibration levels, and handling etc.

All of these things can be very subjective to the individual.

Rubberbanding in 2012!!!! is not cool.

You know, I feel really weird with them releasing so little information about this game. It comes out in like two weeks and there are still a LOT of unknowns. I hope this doesn't show a lack of confidence in the title.

The rubber banding is really noticable, crash head on with traffic and the AI slows down for you to catch up.

Jesus, when will developers learn that rubber banding is just the WORST idea in racing games? I stopped playing HP multiple times because of the bullshit rubber banding. The first time a shittier car flies by me to win at the last second is the last time I play this game.

Isn't that option Metric? Have a look there.

Car sounds are muted and not as wound out as F4, more so road/tire noise especially when going from bitumen to dirt. It is floaty too but it does play very well for what it is. Real shame about not being able to point into corners as with F4 via head-tracking. Not a deal breaker but I am so used to it now and it feels unnatural going back to limited control like that. The FOV is right up on the dash, too forward and too high- chops of nearly half the steering wheel in the EVO.

rubber banding remains prevalent in racing games that aren't sims. i can understand why people don't like it, but it's never gone away, so i don't really get the 'rubberbanding in 2012?' reaction.

yes. almost every racing game that isn't a sim has rubber banding. for decades now.

And every time it is, it screws up the nature and flow of the game. I don't mind them putting it in if they want to make it easier on people, but give us an option to turn that horrible shit off.

I wasn't playing on the hardest difficulty, might be completely absent there.

Forza has always had some funny AI scripting one way or another, it's no surprise.

I really enjoyed the demo feels like they wanted to mix Dirt with TDU and got something that feels just like those games. The handling is really forgiving though you really need to turn off those assists if you want to feel like you are actually driving.

Played it for an hour (the demo let's you free roam for as long as you want).

Game is very much trying to be like the recent NFS Hot Pursuit. I say this because the courses are very similar, with super long straightaways with very little traffic & wide super easy turns.

30fps, physics are arcadey, crashes are terrible, like early PS2 games bad. Going head first into an oncoming car at 175mph should not just jolt the other car a little bit.

The scenery is boring as shit too. Empty roads, long rows of the same trees everywhere with sparse low polygon homes as the background.

A poor man's NFS Hot Pursuit.

The handling in hot pursuit is a joke compared to this.

Feels like an open world PGR to me, i love it. PGR4 is my favorite racer.
And it looks gorgeous.

what is up with the UI/menu's? did someone from DiRT make it?

i have no issues with this. i was just responding to someone who seemed to suggest that there was something weird about a game in 2012 having rubber banding, as if it's not still par for the course for this type of racer.

Yeah I guess I should've figured it out myself, just got a bit confused since up until now everyone says "Have you played the new Forza?" etc end never really call it "Forza Motorsport". They're basically making the Forza brand into a NFS type of brand I guess, it't the subtitle that says what type of game it is, Forza itself doesn't say anything. Could be a good thing, new racing games is always fun. Just wish they went with 60fps.

That might be because of the cars that they choose for the demo. The Viper and the Evo are very easy to handle. In he Mustang v Mustang with all assist off and simulation steering I was able to let the back end out more and had a ton of fun drifting around the corners.

Did you drive a mustang in PGR4? it handles very much the same as in horizon.

Gave it a go just then and was pretty impressed. Looks solid, gameplay is classic forza, menus look good etc (even if it looks ripped from a dirt game).

World does feel rather.. empty and lifeless though. I dunno if the full game will be different however.
