Forza Horizon demo impressions

Hum... I liked it, in general. But for the first time, not day 1 purchase unfortunately (I'm low on $/€).
I was hoping that the front-lights in the car produced shadows in poles and fences (and objects in general, like a flashlight), but that's not the case... nitpicking from my part, I know.
But as I said, I liked it! :)

Edit: shadows update their position during daytime in bulks of 2 or 3 seconds at a time (not gradually) -> More nitpicking (who cares about it besides me :P)

With all the aids off, driving feels good. Not FM4 good, but it's miles ahead of NFS's motorboat physics

That said, I much prefer driving in a city setting like Most Wanted's, compared to Horizon's countryside

What to do, GAF, what to do?

Hehee, people already breaking out of the Demo areas.
Is it true that if you hit a certain jump as the plane is flying over you can glitch into the plane and fly it outside the map, and if you head west for twenty minutes you can land in Forza 5? Can someone confirm?

*shrugs*

I bought both ;) and I know I'll enjoy both of them.

Heliooosssooososss!!!

Please, put my fears to rest. I need to know:
Why are the sounds well behaved?
Do the exhaust upgrades at least raise the volume/aggressiveness of the sounds?
Is DSP still a feature in Horizon?
Where are the shifting effects?
Where are the exhaust pops, splutters and crackles?

C'mon man, need some answers here.

Yes, I sound like a nut case focusing on audio here. Some people love graphics, others, the game-play...I LOVE sound!

Surely Wiswell isn't responsible for this is he?

Just completed the demo.

I had a good time. This game was already pre-ordered couple of weeks ago for the (I really hope) Collector's Edition. Thanks for the free car for the full version of Horizon by the way! Shame I did not receive the one for Forza 4 by pre-ordering Horizon...

Still, I think I need more info regarding types of racing, things to do in free roam (besides barn finding). Will the DLC be Cars only? I think that was some stuff regarding more things besides cars. But what was that? Game is so close to release and there's so many secrets... I don't get it.

There were times which the visuals seemed a bit Blurry? The environments seemed that way and the look inside the car seemed a bit blurry too. Is this what people say Piss filter is? What's that, for me piss it's like "I'm going to the bathroom taking a piss" so I have no idea what Piss filter is (English is not my main language, sorry).

Another thing, buying Tokens? No thanks. Also I will not get Most Wanted. Not because I do not want but when it comes to making a choice (for money purposes) only one racing game will be purchased this year. Lucky for the GAFfers who will get them both.

Regarding difficulty it seemed Ok since I was playing on Custom-Medium (+55% in earnings) but I might turn Stability off after some more races.

Soooooo that intro movie isn't skipable :/
3 times in one day lol
Any hoot I'm off to a land of villainy and betrayal

No not the GT vs Forza thread, just picked up dishonored and I'm gonna stab some people before bed.

People seem to be for or against this demo, not a lot of gray area!

haha you're pretty much right. Everything tinted yellow like piss.

I really hope that FH turns out to be good and can't wait to try the demo tonight based on everyone's impressions. I've watched all the NFSMW videos and think that Criterion has done a great job, but do I want to really play a re-skinned Paradise City from 2009? A lot of the locations in NFS are ripped out from Paradise City.

Is this feeling like NFS of old + TDU to many?

Had a fair amount of time with it:

- Handling model is enjoyable(using a controller here, no assists). Its a fair bit less sim than Forza Motorsport 4, but it feels good. Cars are forgiving and there's generally a good amount of grip even on the dirt/gravel, but its all pretty predictable feeling and you're still rewarded for driving well for the most part. So my biggest concern about the game is gone at least. It drives far better than TDU or any other open world racer I've played.

- Graphics are pretty. 30fps is noticeable, but perfectly fine. Backdrops look real nice and there's very few jaggies. Nighttime looks ok. Nothing too special, but on par with most games that have night/day cycles. The piss filter doesn't bother me as much as it does most people, but I do think the overall setting of Colorado might wear thin. Still, should be a photographer's paradise.

- Sounds are nothing to get excited about. Didn't really expect anything in this regard, though. Imagine FM4, but with a little less in-your-faceness.

- The actual races were enjoyable and its nice to have an instant option to race rivals afterwards. AI doesn't seem overly aggressive or anything. Rubberbanding is definitely present, but I'm not sure why it bothers people so much. I suppose my biggest reason for wanting this game isn't the races or anything(at least not against the AI), so it doesn't affect me as much. Traffic AI is mountains less frustrating than in TDU. Very little swerving around right as I'm zooming by.

Overall, I think its pretty much as good as I was expecting. I think the map size will limit my long-term enjoyment of the game, but there should still be enough area to just run around and enjoy driving these cars free of the boundaries of circuits. The best time I had in the demo was turning off all the HUD elements, turning off music(did that from the get-go actually - its not my cup of tea) and just driving around aimlessly.

Also, when the girl just started talking I just got some good old Dirt vibe, which is good for me. Can't wait for more info, 2 weeks to go. Oh and who will be doing the OT| ?

Let's hope Helios shows up and give us some fresh little info.

I will be doing the OT with a LOT of help from Zorbsie.

Enjoyed the demo but is the map really full size? I zoom right out and the drivable and non-drivable area is tiny. Please tell me that the map isn't all there is...

This is just Dirt 2 with open world elements.

Why is there no weight to the Cars? Missing vibration.

BTW personal thanks to the development team for putting some fucking decent AA, Forza 4 has terrible AA.

The car in the starter race felt a little 'heavy' on the gravel to start, but I adjusted by the end of the race and it wasn't something I noticed again. I like the Mustang vs Mustang race, the scenery on that track is going to make for some amazing pics, and the smoke the Mustang put off when I did a burnout looked a lot better than the patchy stuff from past Forzas.

Noticed birds flying around at one point. Hope there's more 'environmental life' stuff like that.

DiRT 2 was awesome so that's good to hear. Can't wait to try it, will dust off the old wheel. Won't be buying it day 1 because of the 'expansion' so soon after but definitely will play the demo.

Haven't tried the demo yet but piss filter refers to the picture having a yellow tint.

Just compared and the whole map in the demo is the same map in image releases.
Massively underwhelmed but still day 1 purchase and if the DLC includes more of a map then call me a sucker as I'll most likely buy it.

What's up with the textures in cockpit cam? They're worse than in Forza 4! The dashboard with all the indicators looks absolutely low res, you can't read anything! Maybe it's a demo thing? I have a hard time believing they could't have better textures on cockpit cam.

That's my biggest complaint so far. I absolutely love the Dam race. Image IQ is pristine, a rarity for a console game (and a blessing for a now mainly PC gamer). 30fps are smooth, definitely on the higher, good end of 30fps games. Driving feels pretty good. The graphics are awesome (again, the Dam race...)... Speed and Zone cameras are a nice touch...

It's no TDU, so besides having a smaller world, it's in almost every way better than it.

Is the demo up for the UK? I can't find it when searching Forza Horizon on the Xbox.

Edit: Aw shit, it's Gold exclusive. Microsoft is so dumb. Why lock demos away? Their whole purpose is to sell a game, and putting it behind a paywall just limits the people who get to try the game.

Kinda disturbed by what I'd reading here about cockpit view, audio, and driving feel with zero assists. I'm a cockpit view only driver, who turns off all assists except for ABS and am in love with the audio work done for Forza 4.

But I should have the demo downloaded and ready to go when I get home.

Guess it's one of those games that nobody asked for...
Not even close ;P Been dreaming about exactly this. Test Drive Unlimited tried, but fell short. Maybe this is the real deal.

The good:

- When set to simulation and turning off aids the driving model was ok for what the game is going for
- Good AA

The bad:

- Rubberbanding
- Piss filter + blurry
- Soundtrack + presentation (Dat intro)

Having the choice between this and NFS MW2, I rather trust Criterion with my need for arcade racing. Guess it's one of those games that nobody asked for...

Each to their own, I think the soundtrack is phenomenal
Chemical Brothers, Rusko, Madeon and Porter Robinson all in quick succession? Yes yes more of that!

If you want an arcade racer then why do you want Horizon?
Because thats what Horizon is largely. Just happens that the driving model is less arcadey than usual.

Sounds are still fine. Its similar to FM4. Dont get too worried about Saladine's complaining. He gets a bit more rabid over this stuff than 99% of us. ;)

Well if you want an arcade racer in the line of NFS by Criterion, with in your face stuff, then Horizon is more on the realistic side in comparison.

OK, some silly questions

1. No progress seems to be saving, so every time I launch the demo, I have to go through the whole series of races again, is this just me, or lame demo logic?

2. I see two other small areas of the map lit up, and you can 'GPS' them, but you can't get there due to the no go reset barriers..

Other then that, I've had a couple of goes since lunch time today, and it's a solid 8/10 and I can't wait for the full game.. a few niggles
1. In-camera view is a bit flat texture wise (I've seen others mention it)
2. The stupid moving camera menu crap.. does my head in and gives me motion sickness on the racing rig being sat so close.
3. The handling is 100% 'safe' compared to FM4, which is ten times better then TDU or NFS etc, but I was kind of hoping for something a little closer to FM4..

Other then that, the demo obviously has many 'holes'in it, like no replays etc, but we'll have to wait until the end of the month to see what you really get.. I kind of feel the demo is holding too much back

It is just me or the thread has gone from "Oh! it is really great! amazing graphics/IQ!" to "Blurry, piss filter, bad everything, NFS is better"...

Haha. Good to know.

Maybe we all have different degrees to what we call arcade racers. For me, you almost never never need to use brakes in an arcade racer unless you're drifting like a maniac. And you can't shift weight or use any advanced driving techniques to give you an edge.

I love Criterion to death and will pick up Most Wanted without hesitation, but that's not at all what I'm looking for in Horizon.

Swedish voice acting oh my gooood. The last game to have that was like Diablo on Playstation or something.
Sidglid!

Second thing I notice is they continue insisting everyone in Europe uses kW. Does anyone? Superwierd how they keep getting that wrong, especially contrasted against them having gone to the length of localizing the entire game in a whole bunch of different languages.

Depends on what you define as 'arcade' I guess. There's a middle ground between general arcade racers and sim games thats not really covered by any specific term where Horizon falls into somewhere. Some people will say its 'arcade', others will say 'an open world Forza Motorsport'.

Can't see you not liking the demo then, my only gripe with cockpit is the narrow FoV they've used since F4, it amplifies the sense of speed also. Looks nice with dials lit up at night.

Drives like a Forza, sound is a little bit of a letdown especially when the music is off, wouldnt like to judge it until hearing what difference the upgrades make.

It is like PGR series, not arcade at 100%, not sim at all.
