Gamestop starts selling Steam vouchers

Ooooh, I see. A lot of people here are scared of credit card info being stolen. Amusing.

What reason would there be to complain about this?
When did I say people should complain about it?

Why the hell wouldn't you be?

COMPLETE DIGITAL SATURATION
My honest reaction was "so what?" Why not just buy the games straight off of Steam, etc. That's not to say I didn't understand why it is a good thing, but I didn't understand why everyone was quite this excited.

No thanks, I'd rather GameStop not get a cut.
No reason to walk into a Gamestop. Valve could at least sell it to other retailers like Best Buy, Amazon and Walmart too. Wonder what will happen to Impulse now?
I can see these cards selling for less on ebay than msrp easily.

It's like the 2011 PSN hack didn't happen at all!

Happen at all!

Happen at all!

Stupid sexy Sony.

Kind of cool people can use GameStop giftcards and used games towards Steam now essentially.

I won't personally be taking part in any of this because as a grown adult, I can buy Steam games directly, and any physical games I buy are through Amazon, so I look to keep my money out of Gamestop's hands, but cool for those who don't have a healthy hatred for the company as I do.

This will be good for Game Stop. I honestly don't understand the problem people have with them.

They are probably salivating at the ability to sell digital codes for downloads on the e-shop in the future.

The good part about it to me is that - assuming someone is both a console and gaming pc owner - instead of only trading in your console games for store credit and buying used console games where only GameStop is making any profit, you now have the ability to trade in console games for what is effectively Steam credit. This way GameStop gets their little bit, Valve gets their little bit, but most importantly the Developer/Publisher/Actual people involved with making the games are making more money. Now, obviously this won't always be the case - it may not even be the majority situation - but I can't see it as anything other than good.

None of my family members have steam accounts, and won't simply hand me cash as a holiday gift.

They will give giftcards though. :D

The only thing stopping you from using Steam was the lack of Gamestop?

Not everyone has a credit card or want to put one on the account. My kid has his own steam account but do you think I would be stupid enough to put my CC info on it! This way I could give him this as a gift like I do with his Xbox points and he can buy whatever he wants.

I've been asking for this for the longest. Now my store credit can go towards Steam cards. If this is true of course.

Steam accepts cash?
Nope, but it accepts credit cards.

Shit happens. It would be pretty stupid to let one bad event prevent someone from purchasing anything online in the future. Hell, I do my banking online - should I stop doing that, too? My bank can get broken into, and my password can get stolen. No matter what you do, your info is out there electronically somewhere. Important info. I don't understand the irrational fear over purchasing things online.

I dig.

Yeah, like I said, I get why it's a nice thing. I just didn't expect people to be this enthusiastic about it. More like "oh, okay, that's cool". Maybe I'm also overestimating the age of the average user on this forum.

I wonder how much of a cut Gamestop gets. I think Valve could go up to something like a 10-15%, which is much higher then almost any other gift card.

Dunno about him, but in my case, I'm sitting on a bunch of trade-in credit and a couple of unused Gamestop gift cards right now, so... yes? (GS doesn't currently allow you to apply gift cards toward their direct download stuff for some bizarre reason.)

Not really a rumor. Valve added files within the latest version of the Steam beta that gives the option to redeam Steam Wallet Vouchers:

http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=30561285&postcount=28

There will be a link to "Redeem a Steam Wallet Voucher..." in the "Games" menu between "Activate a product" and "Manage gifts". It will link to "%store%/account/redeemwalletcode/"(https://store.steampowered.com/accou...eemwalletcode/), but that currently redirects to the homepage.

Or underestimating the number of people who trade in games for credit and/or receive gift cards as gifts.

I guess that's going to prove once again that you can't go into the PC DD market and be successful without customer trust.

I'm confused. Exactly what is the point of these outside of like a gift card type situation? Why waste time driving to the store when you can just log into steam and buy whatever you want?

Woah!

Bomba steam voucher price + steam sale = double bomba.

Some people don't have credit cards, paypal or whatever. Additionally, these cards are sometimes sold at a discount!

After years of free (or next to nothing) software available on Steam ... and this will convince some people to try the service?

Well ... I don't have any words for that.

I don't use Creditcards on services at all. I just don't trust it. Old fashioned or paranoid? Maybe, but I found that I can also take better control over my expenses by using prepaid cards and vouchers.

So yes, this would make me get into Steam.

Take all the Gamestop Credit that sits there most of the time, now has a purpose, use to feed the Steam addiction of yourself or other addicts looking for their next Seasonal Sale Blowout fix

Well Played Lord Gaben, Well Played

Remember all those GAFfers going: "Well you can't sell your Steam Games Dummy, even if you bought a $60 Game for $5, there's no way to sell them or get back your money's worth"... Well the used game system just went in Steams Favor... OH SNAP!

Oh by the way, the Flippers who do those Load Off Deals, will make a fucking killing off this if the have an addiction to PC Gaming or just want to turn profit faster

This would be amazing if I was twelve and did not have a credit card.

To bad you are more interested in trying to look cool with a dumb reply then actually understanding that this will benefit Steam users a lot. I can now give Valve my gamestop in store credit money rather then it all going to gamestop and now people can buy me these pre-paid steam cards for gifts instead of other crappy presents.

This. Even those who detest Second Hand sale use and ask Gamestop to be burned should be happy

Cause Steam Vouchers are end game, if you take all the credit from Gamestop and transfer into cards, no more Gamestop cycle, all that money is flushed out, yes GS will get skimmed a little $$$ for it, but overall this will remove credit forever

Uh... prepaid cards are pretty big outside the US. Not everybody has a CC you know.

Just for the record, i have plenty of credit cards but with all the shit that has gone down over the last 12 months with hackers, i have become very paranoid with using my credit cards online. I find myself using pre-paid cards more and more for online purcases. For example, I only use pre-paid cards with BestBuy.com now and plan on making the transition with Amazon shortly.
