GFWL Thread

Judging by those tweets, I'm risking sounding so 'uncool' here but fuck, what a load of nonsense. I've had no trouble with GFWL all the years I've had to deal with it. Sure, it's a bit intrusive at times, but I loved getting achievements on PC. The fact some people would rather entire aspects of games were SHUT DOWN rather than keep GFWL just sounds ridiculous, like angry children having tantrums after bedtime, figuratively cutting off their noses to spite their faces.

Have we had any official word whether GFWL live is definitely going next month, and what the HELL will happen to Viva Pinata!!!!!!!?? :(

That you specifically had no trouble with it doesn't change the fact the service has massive problems. If I walk through traffic with a blindfold on and reach the other side without getting hit by traffic that doesn't make it a good way of crossing the street.
Problems like how it isn't even available in a bunch of countries, liked to delete save games, made patching games take way more time and money for developers, etc.

I realize there's going to be a bunch of games left in the dust, but I'm sure all this means is that they extended support for like another 3-6 months so it will happen eventually anyway. It sucks for co-op stuff mostly, as the MP community in all these games was dead anyway.

I'm writing this down in my strong rebuttals book.

This is true for so many things. Thank you.

I have no idea why people want GFWL to shut down.
Yeah it's not great, but it'd rather have games working than dead.

Because even the unconfirmed news that Microsoft's sunsetting it has lead games having it patched out, which has meant in pretty much all cases (even if SF4 seems to have some issues) better games for us.

A complete shutdown will force developers/publishers of the last games using to act. And if they don't, we will still have won more then we have lost.

Considering Microsoft pulled down their GFWL store, I'll be surprised if GFWL is even available for developers to use in their games. And Capcom hasn't looked back towards GFWL since they started using steamworks.

Nope, I don't think that either, with how Microsoft handles it today. But what I'm saying is that until it's completely shutdown, I won't rest easy because that still leaves the door open for some idiot at Microsoft to try and restart it in some kind of Win8 suit.

I want it completely dead and buried. If a few games suffers because of it, so be it. It will at least put additional pressure on developers/publishers who have yet to patch it out.

My Twitter feed is blowing up due to this Tweet, but the rage is largely overblown.

Two main points to keep in mind with this Tweet.

  • Microsoft seems to have pushed back the July 1st unofficial shutdown date.
  • Hopefully the 'more information in the future' is a Steamworks transition for Halo 2.

GFWL is inevitably ending, but Microsoft has likely given more time to developers to fix their games inundated with the DRM.

You're too hopeful if you think the service going down will convince every publisher to replace GFWL. Gamespy is a good example that a ton of stuff doesn't get updated even when it stops working.

That's life. It happens, it sucks yeah... but you can't do anything about it. Delaying the inevitable is stupid. This is the second or third "delay" of the shutdown simply because they still have some communities of 100 or so players playing.

It's especially dooming for games which wasn't a success. I personally really enjoyed playing Lost Planet 2 coop, but I don't think there's any chance in heck Capcom will update that game as it was a giant flop.

Want those games to live on? Hassle Capcom/Namco/et. al. to transfer to Steamworks. Capcom did it with SSF4/AE, so they already know there's demand for their titles to live on past the GfWL shutdown.

The bolded gets criminally overlooked, I have many friends overseas that I could never play with on certain games becaseu they don't have GFWL there.

It's disheartening to hear 'I can't buy that here, MS won't let us' when I bring up a game for my group of friends to play.

It's hilarious as you can just gift the game to those that can't actually purchase it through Steam.

It's hilarious to me how GFWL delivers a significantly better product to those that are willing to pirate.

  • Removes region locks.
  • Runs better as the DRM is cracked.
  • GFWL prevents access due to errors at so many levels, removing it will allow people actual access to the game.
  • Some games, such as Bulletstorm, do not run at all without access to GFWL servers. These games will be inaccessible if the GFWL servers are down.

It was so funny to see CliffyB blame consumers and pirates when Gears of War originally launched on PC. What a disaster that situation was, releasing with the horrible GFWL DRM and a monthly fee for a P2P connection on top of that.
The sad part is Epic ignored the platform entirely for the better part of a decade after that. I can't believe the ignorance of a large company such as Epic.

If I play Dead Rising 2 / OTR right now, and it does get patched I'm going to end up losing my save won't I? I remember reading about this happening to people when other games (I seem to recall Batman in particular) removed GFWL.

Also, what will happen to these games if they are not patched before MS pulls the switch? Will they be entirely unplayable, even for single player, without cracking the DRM?

Yes to both questions.

There are ways around it of course. Gfwl save stripper and xliveless for the drm problem.

So, say in 2 months they end up removing GFWL and replacing it with Steamworks. I could use GFWL Save Stripper to carry over my save instead of losing it? Has this orked for other games that replaced GFWL with other DRM?

I'm basically trying to decide if I should play the games now (while GFWL is still up) and deal with the saves issue, or if I should wait for a, hopefull, fix and then play them.

http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2014/06/19/games-for-windows-live-exodus-continues.aspx

We are continuing to support the Games for Windows Live service. As previously announced, as part of the retirement of Microsoft Points the Xbox.com PC marketplace was closed. Although customers are unable to purchase new games from the marketplace or receive title updates, they can continue to enjoy previously purchased content by downloading them through the Games for Windows Live client as usual. We remain committed to investing in PC gaming in the years ahead, and look forward to sharing more in the future.

Don't do this, Microsoft. You were doing just fine killing it.
I wonder if we should take that statement at face value of if it's just PR speech for "We are not ready to announce GFWL's dismissal right now".

It was not fine because they were making games unplayable.
This just likely means they are continuing to support login/authentication for existing games (no new games will have GFWL). It's only good news.

Huh? This is good news. People are now able to keep playing games that rely on GFWL.

Look, I don't care. Just kill it.
Most of those "unplayable" games will be playable in their single player form anyway, thanks to external fixes, and they were already beyond death as multiplayer experiences (not to mention fixes aren't out of the question even for them).

When it comes to more recent releases (i.e. Dark Souls?) killing the service is the only reasonable way to push developers and publishers to implement alternate solutions.
Keeping it on life support isn't going to do anyone a favour on the long run.
And trying to relaunch it would only make things worse.

install xliveless now (it is just a matter of putting a DLL in the game directory) and start fresh. Saves will be stored locally, for ever, no more connections to an online server, etc

If Halo Smartphone and Age of Empires are of any indication, they're not going to relaunch it.
