Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

Rocks, rocks, rocks!
Black Myth Wukong's rock formations look pretty realistic (from a distance!), so here is my contribution:

The 'God of War Ragnarök' Asgard-wall rocks are superb too, and have overall better close-up detail:

I remember Death Stranding was darn good in this regard as well. Looking forward to the sequel.

There is something about Dragon Age's visual design that i hope other games copy. it's not just the hair either. Their dialogue and cutscenes have this really great pre-rendered look that i havent seen from other games. Maybe FF16. it feels like a Pixar movie.

The rest of the game is fairly basic. Maybe GOW ragnorak quality. Perhaps even worse. the rocks, the textures, the lighting. everything feels so basic, but at times when the lighting looks just right, it can look very pleasing. not next gen, just very different from other games.
Yeah, I also have to admit that I'm weirdly attracted to the game's visual aesthetics. Maybe I'll give it a shot sometime.

DA Veliguard can sometimes look pretty decent, the art style is nice, except some characters, but Jesus Christ the other times looks like ass.

I mean look at this, this is maxed out, RT enabled (of course, runs like ass) and I've seen even worse stuff, this isn't a game that you can't max out at 4K and run more than ok without needing a high end PC, such BS.
I just can't understand stuff like this, and DF were so enamored with this, wow, such great visuals, such good performance, fuck off.

The bloom and low-quality blur are straight up from the Xbox 360 era. I'm not kidding, this look horrendous.

I would agree for the most part. Overall the game is decent looking but not exceptional. But there’s scenes and technologies that really shine in spots, and I do think the art-direction does the game a lot of favors as well. It has a soft, dreamy vibe to it that lends to the fantasy setting.

The anti-aliasing is great too; not a shimmer in sight for me (4k/DLAA).
im playing on dlss balanced and it looks better than dlss quality in most games. their AA solution is excellent. no jaggies or shimmering in sight.

Ok finally someone else here mentioned this. Everyone else keeps saying the game looks bad overall but the cutscenes and photo mode shots look insane to me and comes closer to that dream of real time games looking like CGI.
it looks better on my tv for sure. the animations are excellent and gives the game a very smooth cg feel even outside of cutscenes when the lighting is just right. Had they updated their materials and textures, this would be a looker. its as linear as the order, callisto and hellblade 2 so no reason it couldnt look better.

the volumetric fog is straight up trash. its basically a haze effect instead of actual volumetric fog, and it does not look good at all.

whats weird is that it in the big gothic city, they dont use any fog and the draw distance is extremely impressive. you can see this massive castle in the distance from anywhere on the map, and while it's not particularly next gen, it's kinda cool to see the entire city at once.

Yeah i'm sorry but the remaster doesn't reach parity with fw face models, they are still too lucid, waxy and the skin is not on par with fw, only aloy seems to reach parity.

Faces looks weird in the remaster.

Some effects like explosions and fire don't reach parity aswell but i'm not sure of this, fw explosions are not really the best.

The more i play the more underwhelming it looks.

Dragon Age has to be the least giffable next gen only game ive played this gen. I think GOW Ragnorak was the last time i felt absolutely no desire to take screenshots or gifs.

That said, the Treviso city has its moments. It reminds me of the city in mgs4 which i understand is not a great comparison lol. But its like a ps4 version of that city with some pretty decent lighting. I do like the draw distance.

LiVWI3h.gif

I also like my character model in cutscenes. Sadly even after 6-8 hours, the first cutscene hasnt been topped. 10 years in the making and all they did was dialogue cutscenes. Come on. give me some epic shit like in Mass effect.

This is awesome. Some weird morphing, artifact-looking stuff, but I would play games that have an AI-layer on top if it makes games look like this. I wonder if there would be a benefit and/or if it'd be possible to have a separate component of GPUs that's dedicated to adding AI-interpretation of what's being generated via traditional methods to do this in real-time.

Kind of interesting to think that if this AI layer is the way real-time graphics are heading, we spent 60 or so years fine-tuning non-AI real-time graphics techniques only for this advancement to come and blow it out of the water.

Yeah, the game has some moments, I just arrived in this city, and it's pretty decent, but all in all still doesn't justify the requirements even with RT on, which RT isn't anything spectacular.

I wouldn't get my hopes up, I'm playing the game just for the story to see how they end it and I'm guessing were gonna have another cutscene like that at the end.
Those 10 years are in fact maybe 3-4 years tops, the game went through multiple changes, that Mass Effect team is long gone, which for me is a damn shame, ME is one of my favourite series, I've played the 3 games 10X each.

This reminds me of the first time I saw Mortal Kombat in the arcade. It has that uncanny valley feel to it, but you knew you were witnessing history in the making.
I remember thinking it looked a bit "pit fightery" when I saw Kano in the scroll screens, but I let it slide, especially as it was "only" £1 in Mr.B's arcade in Blackpool. 😅

it will take 30+ years to get AI hardware that can do this in realtime. And by that time we will have photorealism already.

this reminds me that the game was originally a multiplayer game which explains the cartoony artstyle. hroizon mp is also going with that art style. it was probably too late to change it by the time they switched to single player only.

All of these look like shit. A game is not going to look like real-life 1:1. These AI filters are making real life humans and buildings placed in the clip. Its more like what a GTA movie would be like and not what a GTA video game could look like in 10 years. These are not graphics, these are real world assets, looks terrible in a video game.

Yeah, something like that, may be wrong, but I think it was initially a single player only, then multy and finally back to single player, all this while also going through different directors and so on, so yeah, explains a lot.

It's a shame, as the Treviso area looks good, and other locations look decent, or should I say parts of locations, but I could have looked really good overall and definitely better optimized.

I’m playing through RE4 remake on pc. And the performance is significantly worse than the other RE remakes. I have all settings maxed out. Only getting 60FPS and sometimes it slows down considerably. Does the tracing need to be turned off for a better experience? I turned off hair details but that didn’t change anything. Maybe this RE engine really just isn’t meant for more open bigger games. But strangely RE7 and 8 perform better for me. This is the worst performance wise from all the recent RE games on pc.

I finished Hogwarts Legacy a month ago and overall it's one of the best I've played in this generation. It has really nice graphics and I really liked the way the open world is recreated. Not bad considering that it's also available for the previous generation.

What do you think of this DA compared to it? Ignoring the hair, which is clearly better, without a doubt this technology brought from FIFA is incredible.

Funny how that AI only manages to make pretty dolled up girls. Dina wearing lipstick and earrings and having long polished nails. :}

Also pretty interesting that despite the images feeling real, it still looks like a game. Probably due to the camera behavior, being stuck to the character and rotating around it and all.

You're not wrong... but it's still pretty damn wild how far they've come with AI video generation in such a short time.

Yeah I am playing Horizon Remaster and it looks great when it comes to environments but characters still look like wax, and their animation is still not looking great, very robotic compared to Forbidden West, and the amount of clipping I have seen is terrible, even more than in the original due to characters moving more. You cant just make main story cut scenes with that huge clipping showing everywhere. I am not surprised that Sony is charging so little because apart from some of the improvements in the scenery the game is dated compared to FW and the visual improvements from characters just accentuate even more the issues I mentioned. Its still a great game for a new franchise and I am having fun even tho I feel like the remaster needed a few more patches

It's a good looking last gen game. I really liked the level of detail inside shops in hogsmead and hogwarts is beautifully realized with lots of detail packed in. But it still felt last gen to me. One of the better looking last gen games.

To me its not even the bugs, it's just off. it feels like a game from the past souped up to look next gen but still doesnt pass the eye test. it's too similar and suffers from the same issues as TLOU1 did. Its technically using the same tech, but the game's level design keeps it feeling last gen.

What's funny is that SOTC and Demon Souls are literally 2-3 gens behind but their level design transcends generations. SOTC can look weak at times due to the poor draw distance, but credit to Bluepoint and Team Ico for not letting it feel dated like TLOU1 and HZD do. My guess is that the art design is also a big reason why. BP's work on Demon Souls is exceptional. This is Nixxes' first attempt so they will only get better.

I do hope they pick a better project to remaster going forward. At least two gens behind using tech thats exclusively next gen instead of the same gen tech they are using here. though id rather they skip remaking games altogether. there is nothing left in sony's portfolio that i want remastered. maybe kz2 but even that is going to feel dated because GG are no FromSoft or Team Ico.

RE4 has issues with RT. RT reflections on apply to bodies of water so just turn it off and gain some vram back. Use it on high rest textures instead.

Turn the hair on, make sure to max it out. Medium setting isnt good enough. it looks amazing in cutscenes.

I played it at native 4k 60 fps with RT off, hair maxed out on my 3080. With RT on, the game would crash as it would go over the vram limit. They have patched it since and while it may not crash, the performance will degrade.

Curious question about hdr. Is this actually something you guys use? I tried it for the first time on RE4R on pc and it gives it a complete washed out look. Like all the darks were completely washed away. Is this what it does to most games?

You couldn't pay me to play Veilguard, and you couldn't play me to play Spider-Man 2 and Forbidden West again. I have two of the three. Aloy is boring as shit, her exasperated breaths after every syllable are fuckin' annoying, and the Spider-Man 2 versions of Miles Morales and Mary-Jane are annoying as shit.
You guys do it for the graphics, and I admire that, but I could never do it. Spider-Man 2 is such a shit-show compared to part 1, and Horizon, some how some way, had a better lore and backstory, through mere text displayed on-screen, than Forbidden West did. Veilguard just insults you to your face way worse than damn-near anything out there.

Thats because some games have poor HDR implementation. Also, you might not have a good HDR monitor.

Ive been playing games in HDR since 2016, and they almost always look better. RDR2 and maybe a couple of other games are the exception. But I dont remember RE4 on PC having issues with HDR. Try GamingTech on youtube and try his settings. You might need to adjust the black levels and turn down brightness.

PS5 schmuck here, and I have LG's C3 which came out last year. If he has a bad monitor than I have a bad monitor, because I'm not a fan of HDR on my tv either. I just play with the Standard setting(s) on my TV and let the chips fall where they may.
In RE4 remake, without HDR, environments are nice and darkly lit. HDR removes that foreboding aura completely due to brightening things. Uncharted, Tomb Raider, half a million of these games that take place in some dry-ass desert, I could see, but a game that uses darkness as an atmosphere, almost as a physical object itself, HDR, for me, on my tv, doesn't work. It doesn't cut it.
I've tried the game mode, the standard mode, tinkerer with multiple settings on the (PS)5, tinkered with in-game settings within RE4, and I just keep coming to the same conclusion that HDR off is the best option for me. LG C3 ain't the best tv, but it's far from the shittiest is my point. With a tv being capable like that is, it tells me that that game isn't suited for me. Feel free to dissect.

Yesterday, Empire of the Ants went on sale, a curious game where we control insects with a fairly decent technical finish. If I'm not mistaken, I think it's one of the first to be on sale that uses Unreal Engine 5.4. If anyone has bought it, don't hesitate to share photos or videos.

Very rarely some games looks more colorful\vivid but that's it.

Most games have shit hdr and the time you waste trying to micro-calibrate for every game is not worthy, at least for me.

People are gonna tell you how game changing it is, but at the end of the day, it's just a different tone of color, an ugly game is gonna look ugly even in hdr and a good looking game is gonna look great even without hdr.

Btw slimy, i heard people solved the high temps in failguard by upgrading the bios, do you have a 13-14 gen intel cpu and you haven't updated your bios recently? Because that could be the problem, the game from what i saw it should not be heavy on the cpu, it has barely any physics or destruction or large numbers of npcs on screen.
