Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

I'm putting in a 9800X3D today and wracking my brain trying to figure out what to reinstall to test it out...and I'm falling back on Control and Cyberpunk. I think they were the last times graphics actually impressed me.
Those two games, Metro Exodus: Enhanced is another good one, Alan Wake 2, Wukong, Hellblade 2, Avatar, Outlaws… Just to name a few.

Stalker 2 is another good one to try out next week!

I don't think I agree, there's a lot to play... They're just not generation defining titles that shape creative intentions for the rest of the industry, like Uncharted 4 or GOW 2018 did. There are good games coming out every corner, they just don't inspire confidence on the industry as a collective and I feel that's been evident for a while now.
I think you both are saying the same thing. he's just being a bit overdramatic with nothing to play.

like you said, we just dont have those boundary pushing genre defining titles releasing anymore. not in terms of graphics, and definitely not in gameplay. everything feels safe. no offense to RDR2 and its my game of the generation, but aside from graphics, its the same exact game as gta5. linear as fuck mission design. no real sandbox gameplay outside of maybe hunting. And again thats the best game in the last 10 years or so.

the biggest mistakes this talented studios made was making straight sequels that ended up taking 5 years anyway. HFW and GOW Ragnorak are perfect examples. no real innovation, copy paste gameplay, just more of the same. if they had innovated and taken the series to another level then things might have been different. if ragnorak was actually a game built around war mechanics with all out war going on between titans and gods instead of the same exact formula as gow 2018 then we would not be sitting here talking about this. if GG had actually managed to deliver a big war scene at the end of forbidden west instead of literally making it a cutscene, we would not be talking about this.

the studios got complacent. they lost that ambition gene. the drive to be better than everyone. thats why i went so nuts when i first found out so many sony studios were making cross gen games, i knew they no longer wanted to be the best and it would trickle down to not just graphics but also gameplay innovations and the scope of the games.

thankfully, rockstar is still leading the fight. they still want to be the best of the best. but they are a dying breed. ubisoft is phoning in games. sony studios are now phoning in games. sucker punch just the latest casualty of mediocrity and complacency thats swept sony studios. ms studios are phoning in games. though they never really delivered anything great anyway. japan is a lost cause. people wanted something new this gen after two generations of samey bullshit, but nope. and now the industry is in deep trouble financially.

Alan Wake 2 - thanks for reminding me, I will reinstall that. Wukong I found a bit underwhelming? I'm not sure Unreal Engine will ever produce class-leading graphics.

Good points, but at the same time PC market has exploded. I am sure there are people who earlier used to own consoles only OR consoles and PC but are now on PC exclusively. All games are coming on PC and so looking at only console numbers might give wrong idea about the total size.
I mean I owned PC, PS3 AND Xbox 360 because 360 also had good exclusives that werent on PC either. Then I went for PS4/5+PC combo. Next gen I am genuinely thinking to stick to only PC because PS output has gone anemic and most games are coming to PC anyway.

I went PC only after selling my PS5 and have no regrets. Sony and MS on the other hand will regret their decisions at some point. MS probably already does.

What's you GPU? If you were not CPU bound before you will not see a big performance difference.

  1. Starfield is cpu bound.
  2. Most Path Traced games are CPU bound. try Black Myth and Star Wars Outlaws in PT mode.
  3. Star Wars jedi survivor supposedly runs smooth as butter on the 9800x3d due to the new cpu handling 1% lows like a champ. i read that the 1% lows on the 9800x3d are higher than average framerates on mid range intel cpus.
  4. Hogwarts Legacy in hogsmead and hogwarts are both cpu bound especially with ray tracing on.
  5. SH2 with hardware lumen enabled. Though it will mostly eliminate stutters.
  6. Dead Space Remake. Still broken on PC but like most traversal stutters, faster CPUs should handle them well. especially with a 1% low monster like the 9800x3d.

What an insight! I mailed it to Sony Playstation Engineering headquarters. I heard a few engineers already commited seppuku at the sight of your deep technical knowledge and sharpness of your vision compared to theirs after reading it. Cerny remains undecided about the outcome of his life as of yet, the man stopped talking and eating ever since apparently as in complete shock.
The funny thing is that i am simply repeating what cerny said in road to the show when he was trying to justify his 36 cu gpu. Narrow and fast vs wide and slow.

You are forgetting CDPR

I think under the hood there is clearly improvement to geometry and lighting, but it's the same engine and it feels like it looks similar indeed.

But don't forget that they intend to really push the systemic aspect of the game (NPC behaviors, routines, physics, etc..) so I won't be too harsh on the graphics. The first one already looked very good at its time
I see a lot of improvement

Horizon and TLOU are 100 times crisper than those two.
Yeah I'd agree about overall image quality, but visually AW2 and SH2 look a lot more technically impressive than HFW and TLOU. Devs need to do a lot more work for improving image quality on recent games.

You don't have to agree to nothing when all 4 games are on pc and you can judge with resolution parity.

Not sure why we are feeding the obvious troll here.

What do we think bitches??

I think it looks good in some moments and pretty meh in others, but not even top 3 of ue5 games this year.

Thoughts on Balataro getting nomination for GOTY?

I figured this thread would have some fun takes lol
I'm just sad that it wasn't nominated in place of remilk part2.

But at least dogma 2 didn't got a nomination, so...small wins :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

Oh boy another full nextgen looking game having a shit pro patch...

Can this fucking console do something good with games that are not crossgen or crossgen looking?

So what gets title of best graphics of the year for you guys?

  1. Hellblade II (everything)
  2. Silent Hill 2 (environments, art direction, lighting)
  3. Final Fantasy XVI (PC) (lighting, scale)
  4. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League (character models, HDR)

Haven't played Wukong though. Just not my type of game.

If Sony really is wasting effort on a handheld, we have reached the end of cutting edge games. Depressing, truthfully.

the studios got complacent. they lost that ambition gene. the drive to be better than everyone. thats why i went so nuts when i first found out so many sony studios were making cross gen games, i knew they no longer wanted to be the best and it would trickle down to not just graphics but also gameplay innovations and the scope of the games.
It's just so baffling that Sony let them get to that point. It's the only thing that allowed them so much success. I trusted the devs themselves to have enough self respect to go the extra mile, but I guess they really took Jim Ryan's empty-headed business man profile as permission to relax. And we let them. We're not their friends, we're paying customers.

Kotaku and Schreier did untold amounts of damage with all of those hit pieces whining about crunch, too. The journalist class depressed the standards for this industry. When they brought back G4, they should've had Adam Sessler taking the piss out of studios like he used to, not this coddling HR horseshit.

And fuck gamers for playing League of Legends and GTAO for 10 years uninterrupted. Selling this medium up the goddamn river.

thankfully, rockstar is still leading the fight. they still want to be the best of the best. but they are a dying breed. ubisoft is phoning in games. sony studios are now phoning in games. sucker punch just the latest casualty of mediocrity and complacency thats swept sony studios. ms studios are phoning in games. though they never really delivered anything great anyway. japan is a lost cause. people wanted something new this gen after two generations of samey bullshit, but nope. and now the industry is in deep trouble financially.
I wonder how long until these losers recognize how unenthusiastic people are about the medium.

A little early, considering that Stalker 2 is still yet to fully release, and we have Indiana Jones, plus a working Flight Sim to get to. But, so far this year:

1. Hellblade 2: The entire package is unbelievable. No bad parts visually to speak of.

2. Wukong: What a next gen God of War game should have been in terms of tech, scope, and detail.

3. Outlaws: RT in a fully open world game, excellent lighting, interior detail, and impressive exterior detail despite being so large in scale.

Haven’t played SH2 yet.

Wukong is by far the best looking game this year overall, but a lot of that is due to its tremendous artistic direction and sheer scale.
On a purely technological standpoint i haven't a clue.

You don't have a clue?

I mean just look at (most of) the textures and geometry and effects, the game is great both in tech AND artistic design.

Hb2 is more even but that thing is also a glorified tech demo while wukong is a gigantic game.

I mean compared to dudes here like SlimySnake SlimySnake with cybernetic eyes and an encyclopedic knowledge of every software terms like "triple temporal outer layer texture dickbutt processing" or NCAA-NAACP intestinal occlusion mapping" i know jack shit :messenger_grinning_sweat:

I understand that to be this beautiful the game has to be a technical powerhouse too, but i couldn't tell you in which ways, or how they managed such a feat on that short of a budget. Tho i suppose hundreds of hours of government mandated crunch have something to do with it !

Nah, i have absolutely no clue either. I dont think its all lumen or nanite either. The game impressed me with its art design and cinematic flair ive come to expect from SSM and ND. Both SH2 and Wukong have a strong art style, its not just UE5 doing the heavy lifting. Their artists deserve just as much praise as their engineers.

It still took them 5+ years to make the game so they definitely put in a lot of work. And i saw a documentary that said they were working weekends pretty early on because they kept running into people trying to sneak into the building on weekends.

Waiting on that WuKong PS5Pro patch before I hop back in.

God, I can't wait to see what the gore system looks like in TLOU 3.

Same goes for GTA6. I think that game will have some fucking brutal kills.

But TLOU 3 being on a much smaller scale, I think they will top that.

- Hit reactions
- Physics
- Realistic damage/battle scars

Take these all to the next level. While retaining top tier visual fidelity. That's what I expect from these 2 games

Yeah, Outlaws being fully open world and pushing that level of fidelity everywhere was whats so impressive about it. There are some areas where it doesnt look all that great. But I was impressed by just how stunning it looked in many different areas. Both indoors and outdoors. At any time of day. Without sacrifices being made to asset quality and textures while maintaining a stunning art style.

BTW, did anyone else try out Horizon FW on the Pro? I keep going back to it because I get the feeling they have upgraded the graphics even more. I am too stupid to realize just exactly whats changed but it definitely looks better than it did on my base PS5 last week. I mostly only play Fidelity mode so its not like im going from performance to fidelity mode.

I also gave HZD another shot and meh. The one great thing is that its a very good PC port that allows you to couple DLSS with FSR framegen without any mods. It also allows you to use DLAA instead of TAA which is option greyed out in many games. Forza 8 was the last game i played with DLAA and this one looks almost as good. Very clean IQ, but HFW's native 4k mode on the Pro just looks cleaner and sharper and is more eye popping than ever. The draw distance is still kind shit and there is fog fucking everywhere so i really want to know what they changed to make it look better.

It sucks that Sony doesnt allow you to play the game on two devices at once so i cant switch back and forth on the same tv.

P.S My son wanted to know the difference between resolution and framerate so i switched between native 4k and native 700p in HZD remaster and my god, it was such a pixelated mess. Did we really play games like this in the PS3 era or did we never notice because games were simply not pushing this level of detail?
