Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

Adam Whiting, assistant game director :
"But I think there's something to be said about just like, a really meaningful, well paced, really well constructed, well crafted story that players can immerse themselves in,
that's that's got moments of tension, character development, tender moments, and then moments of spectacle and drama,"
Something pitched for that moment when you are, "at the end of a long day at the office, or whatever it is you're doing with your days,

just sitting at home and enjoying something that's delivering a meaningful, well paced story that's respectful of your time as well."
"I think now we've gone too far in the other way. I love cinema and films, and I think a lot of people do.
There's something to be said about framing, and the way that we use the camera, and stuff like that in cinematics and in gameplay."

shaping up to be a good, old-fashioned action game
good visuals, definitely improved over the last showing.
might actually turn into the Matrix game we never got by the time it comes out
just a bit too colourful for my taste, but that might actually turn out to be a good thing

Man AC Shadows continues to impress. I am 30 hours in and i still run into areas where time of day and seasons create some stunning looking images. The cities in the snow look great thanks to a slightly more photorealistic look. You really get to see how good these wooden cities look in some lighting conditions.

Man seeing more and more from this game makes me realize that we are really seeing the differences between current gen and last gen games. RDR2 was on of the best looking open world game from last gen and this game wipes the floor with it. We are finally getting current gen looking games. Even with there shortcoming in some areas, they are miles ahead last gen games. The RT lighting, RT reflections, textures, shaders, details, weather and the amount of trees and foliage is really a step up from last gen.

Ofcourse you can show me some lacking areas, or character models that are a little less detailed than some linear games. But the overall graphics with all things considerd is really impressive for such a dynamic open world game.

I’ve been saying it…
Yep. You called it. Especially in your follow up post mentioning rtgi.

I just played the most amazing looking section in the game. It was winter season, i was riding through a forest, it had just snowed and the sun was setting. I swear it looked like that Witcher 4 sequence where she’s walking back from killing the monster. The colors looked just right and it finally had that cg look i see in some ue5 games. It was perfect. I will gif it tomorrow.

As much as I like AC Shadows, it is way too big. You have not one but two characters with their own full combat styles and feature sets. You have a massive map that after 30 hours ive only explored around 20%. The story is only 1/3rd of the way done. Just had the Act 1 trophy pop up around 25 hours in. So this has effectively a 75 hour campaign.

Back in the day AC games used to be 20 hours and we got one every 2 years. Is it really surprising that we are now getting 70 hour games that take 7 years to make?

This is all so ridiculous to me. Just make a 20 hour game in 2-3 years and move on to the next project. 7 years for intergallactic, AC shadows and witcher 4 is ridiculous. Thats GTA6 timeframes.

And we wont see a true next gen PS6 game from CD Project and Naughty Dog until 2035 when the PS6 launches.

Whoever is running these teams is absolutely clueless and a complete moron. Forget scope creep in engineering terms, from a risk management perspective, putting in so much time and effort into one game is so risky. I am honestly baffled that these so called greedy corporations are ok with releasing 1 game per generation and charging only $70 for it when they used to release 3 games per gen for $60.

Someone has to reign in these developers.
You don’t have to play a game all at once, I welcome “big games”…

Yeah, I said this, the colors look just right, not always, being an open world day/night and all that, but when they do, it's amazing.

Still don't like the faces, imagine if it was a bit smaller in scale and they upped the textures and assets more.

I imagine this looks much better on a decent 4k TV, never mind on an OLED.

I dont know about finally. I thought 2023 was when the gen first started. IIRC, it was star wars jedi the FF16 a few months later then Starfield, Forza, Alan Wake 2 and Avatar to close out the year with a bang.

Yes, there have been consistency issues and several duds like FF7 rebirth, spiderman 2, TLOU1 remake, Forspoken, and most recently Monster Hunter, but ive been fairly happy since mid 2023.

indeed, Shadows' strength comes from investing in dynamic elements like weather, seasons, destruction, and even, lighting. There was a good 10 hour stretch early on in the game where it just didnt look appealing but then as i explored more of the map, more seasons opened up, night time didnt look as bland, fog settled in, cities got more and more vibrant and populated. Yasuke's moveset opened up destruction. those dynamic elements that made the game look meh completely changed the visuals. It's great to see devs get rewarded for putting in the effort to add more dynamic features in their games.

I really hope we see more devs embrace this entire seasons gimmick because it adds so much to the game. Same goes for destruction. You can probably go hours without seeing destruction but when you finally see, it feels like it belongs in the game, and that adds so much to the game's believability.

One thing i will change is the character models. I love the hair, but these faces look terrible or i should say their facial animations look terrible. But other than that, i admire the team for pushing so many next gen features. literally everything is in, dynamic weather, dynamic wind simulations, dynamic destruction, dynamic hair physics, lighting. mesh shaders. just call up GG and get their algorithm or whatever black magic they pulled to make all those dynamic dialogue scenes and character models look that good. But overall, i hope sony devs see this game and stop chasing that native 4k or 60 fps dream. GG already told DF that friends dont let friends play in 30 fps so i guess they are lost. ND made a native 4k 60 fps trailer for Intergallactic, and Insomniac leaks confirmed Wolverine base target is 60 fps.

Most impressive thing to me is the amount of destruction, i was not expecting that, and the cuts are kinda dynamic for some objects, not every hit get properly registered but when they do they look like dynamic cuts.

I think the general level of the graphic is not on the level of the best ue5 games but it is more even, i never saw as bad textures as some places in wukong, and as far as open world goes, this is not exceptional but is more even than most open worlds and this is a big plus, the game look constantly good but never incredible.

Outlaws and avatar have bigger highs but lower lows.

Love those last two screenshots. So great to see this kind of lighting in an open world game. Proper shadowed regions. Great individual tree shadows.

Yep with HDR, on an OLED it looks beautiful. I'd say after Horizon FW and Avatar, it's the most visually striking game i've played this gen. Of course, due to seasons and its open world nature, it's not always that striking, but when it hits, it hits hard.

Wait till you get to Kyoto in Spring. Beautiful pink trees, gorgeous looking buildings.

Yeah comparison have been made about shadows vs. outlaw and said outlaws is better. but idk i believe shadows look way better than outlaws. especially when it comes to weather effects. its literally what outlaw promised in its trailer. I have played outlaws and honestly the environment is BORING. but i have been watching walking videos of shadows and im super impressed. its still have some rough edges but its highs are VERY HIGH.

These look amazing, at least in gif form. Looks cgi-ish

These reflections are amazing. Really like what they have done with the rain in this game. Went to a castle that was under construction and it was really cool to see wet shaders being applied to these really detailed wooden objects.

Also like the volumetric lighting at night. Wish they did it a bit more but its limited to when it rains or snows.

The gifs are making it look worse. what im playing is so much cleaner thanks to dlss 4k quality, and more vibrant due to HDR that i need to turn off when capturing the gifs. I just made a gif of this amazing snow area during dusk that looked legit Witcher 4 quality on my tv but the gif doesnt really look that great because of all those added artifacts from the nvidia capture.

NuYDcwH.gif

I have changed it to 4k capture instead of 1440p with a higher bit rate going forward, but that adds shimmering when I make it smaller. Still, trust me when i say this, that scene in the gif above was a legit holy shit moment.

Outlaws has its strengths but AC is just so massive in scope, very few games will come close to it. I was pretty meh on the game while i was in the first area but as you explore other regions, it just keeps looking better and better. Blizzards at night are stunning in mountainous regions. Some regions have different set of trees that look photorealistic like Wukong's. A random cavern near a waterfall can look absolutely stunning at dawn. The same trees that looked last gen in Autumn, look stunning in Spring. I have literally taken 50 gifs in the last 2 days alone. The last time i did that was with Outlaws, but i was mostly impressed by its interiors, Toshara and Tatooine.

Yeah, rain looks really good.

Also, the fog when it's used right it fits like a glove.

Sorry for the off topic, do you game on an OLED on PC? If so, how is the whole burn in thing?, never had an OLED.

Yep. LGCX 65 inch. Like turk said, just minimize the taskbar to be sure, but i browse the internet using chrome all the time and no burn in. bought it back when the ps5 came out in 2020. make sure to enable the screensaver.

my kids have actually left the ps5 running on this thing overnight and i didnt get any burn-in.

Playing assassins creed now, it’s a pretty awesome looking game I gotta say. Much better looking in person. The lighting really makes it and it’s crazy how the sword slices through things seemingly accurately, like it’s not a canned animation - it’s definitely not a game I feel could be done on the previous gen consoles

I've been using my LGC3 as a monitor constantly for 2 years. No burn in problems with taskbar on.

After seeing Shadows (haven't played the game myself yet) I have little doubt now that Marvel 1943 will look like it did when it was first unveiled by Amy Hennig. If a vast, open world like Shadows can look this good then I am almost certain a game like Marvel 1943 which is much smaller in scope (I believe) will look absolutely bonkers, ESPECIALLY that seems to be what they are focusing on: cinematography. Before Shadows, I had my doubts about that Marvel game looking as gorgeous in real time as it did in the trailer, but now them doubts are slowly fizzling away!

Also, I am now hella itching to see GTA6!!

I said in another post and I say it again. Online screenshots, gifs and videos dont do justice to how amazing AC Shadows look. I have been playing it for 45 hours in a OLED screen and its just mind blowing. I still cant believe how good it looks, specially when raining. Its absolutely breathtaking

its like CGI in movies where it looks great when you just watch it
but when you look at individual frames it may appear worse
that is what's happening here I'd guess. that is how I always felt about ray traced GI anyways in all games I've played

Exactly the reason why some people hate motion blur.
It is supposed to looks great in motion. Enhance the perceived motion.
Of course when you stop, it looks blrury.
But for the same reason you record video with twice the shutter speed compared to your fps.
So 30fps video, standard is to use 1/60th shutter in order to have natural motion blur. Otherwise water and so on look artificial.

On a completely side note. You mentioned CGI and before I read anything else, I got reminded of ff16. That game looks like cgi to me at times

Ive been saying this for a while. If anything, youtube compression and gifs hide the flaws of PS4 gen games making them look better than did on our screens.

Saw this with Avatar. almost everyone was meh on that game until they finally saw that jungle for the first time. Same goes for Silent Hill 2 and AC Shadows. For me it was Wukong. In a span of around 4 years since its reveal, i fell out of love with it because every trailer looked worse and worse to the point it looked like cross gen to me. Then the game came out, i gave it a chance and it blew me away.

For this game, i was a bit more optimistic than the rest of the thread because I knew they had invested in RT and Virtualized Geometry plus the weather and destruction effects that wouldve set the game apart. But even i didnt anticipate it impressing me this much.

P.S Go to miki castle, its under construction. Hope that it rains. Then climb up the tower that's half finished and you will see the best use of wet shaders/rt reflections ive seen this gen. it just looks right.

Sadly DLSS4 is pretty buggy in AC shadows, but still worth it. No wonder its in beta right now and not every game using it by default

Regarding fog, went to a random shrine and it was enveloped in fog for some reason. Absolutely gorgeous. Wish they used this more. Looks CG.

What a great video. ON POINT

We are never again going to get these games with custom engines, custom tech, weird solutions. It's not needed anymore.
The way og re4 works, displays graphics and interactions is a result of limitations. We are not getting that level of uniqueness ever again.
Devs don't have to cheat their way around limitations as much nowadays, so it is obviously less interesting

Have plenty of custom engines. Anvil, snowdrop, re engine, decima, northlight, cry engine, frostbite, rage and whatever black magic that crimson desert engine is up to.

Also devs cheat plenty. What do you think baked gi is? Part of the reason many think games haven’t gotten a big leap is because devs got so good at baking lighting last gen.

I for one am glad they don’t have to bake or fake shit anymore. Been clamoring for destruction, fluid simulation and other physics so it’s great that we are finally getting them or getting close to getting them.

good to see Shadows getting the respect it deserves - finally. Game looks amazing. even on a BASE PS5, it looks stunning.

Combat is also sublime.

Liking the story, although its generic.

My only complaint is the open world it self. Its like Rockstar is the only studio that knows how to make a living breathing open world game.

there isnt enough random events happening out in the world. is there even any bears or wild animals to attack you? no NPC's doing crazy things out in the wild, no criminals, no thieves, no random battles happening. damn man come on.

Oh wow, that topic youtube ragebaiting topic again. How youtube ragebaiting lost its magic.

The Rock Eye Roll GIF by WWE
They never had any.

P.s crowbcat and his ilk banded together to cancel games like AC unity. They never liked gaming. I dislike these guys inserting Yasuke in the game as much as the next guy but as a gamer i could never pass on such a game. They are all posers.

You should play KC2. In terms of world reactivity it’s on par with, if not even better than RDR2

Nvidia should pay Ubisoft dividends for doing such a good job with AC:S` RT systems.
It`s been a while since we`ve seen such a mainstream showcase of why RT is inevitable going forward (Indiana Jones` "meh" GI outside of its PT mode didn`t really cut it)
