For this one GTA4 actually required you to have a Social Club account AND GFWL, GFWL was dropped but Social Club was rebranded into Rockstar Launcher, so technically it's the same requirements still, they just overhauled one of them into a worse service.

Social Club was always there, but it was easy to disable, it's only when it became Rockstar Launcher it was worse because they patched the EXE to require it instead of just using a DLL.

I still think it's an easy solution, even after the controversy. Some bullshit napkin math:

-85-90% of the userbase would have been fine mandatorily linking their accounts had Sony's mandate gone into effect today.
-1-3% of the userbase are hardliners and would probably never link their account.
-One free Premium War Bound and an exclusive emote probably sways the 7-14% that are on the fence.

And then, Sony could send their monthly advertising emails that end users can opt out of but in those emails, for those that don't opt out, include a code for free team boosters (forgot what those are called in H2) and some small amount (50?) of Super Credits. That would keep people from opting out of advertisements and actually get them to look at your emails. And finally send them a happy birthday email with 100 Super Credits and thank them for spreading democracy.
