Ah shit.

I feel like the 3070 and 3080 Super is just around the corner. Should have waited my friend but hey you at least got a 3080. Heard those cards are very hard to find. Congrats.

Nice. Also the CPU I want to get in future. I have seen some people pair this with a 3080. Is that ok to do? I mean wouldn't a Ryzen 7 or 9 be preferable to go with a 3080 or 3090?

It’s fine for gaming with a 3080. When you don’t play at 1080p, almost all processors in the top 5 normalize to the same fps almost haha. Unless you want to stream and multitask on top of gaming, but I don’t care about that.

I'm wracking my brain on what it could be, this is really interesting.

Hey remember this? I took the pc to a repair shop and they said that during the second PSU installation I used the wrong kind of screws and setup the wires wrong and this somehow fried the PSU? I think?

I don't know enough about computers to dispute it, but he says it works after changing the PSU a second time. I'll pick it up tomorrow - time to throw another couple hundred at the problem...

Of course I remember. Man, dropping even more cash on a new system sucks but if the other hardware is alive and well and it finally works, eh.
Screws too long I guess?

edit: don't forget to ask for the broken PSU so you can take a look, maybe it's faulty and you can RMA it.

Yeah I got the pink, didn’t like the green one. I am getting the tofu for the red dragon keycaps

Thanks mate!

Got a 5600X.... paired with a 1060 6GB... fuck this GPU market.

I have a few ways you can potentially increase the capability of that 1060.

1. Try sanding off the 1 and replacing it with a 3. Then lower your settings and either remove your glasses (if applicable) or hit your head against something solid until your vision is blurry. (This also works to improve console visuals)

2. A guy at work told me most graphics cards are actually just the same card but throttled, so just open GW Basic and write:

If GPU = 1060 then
GPU = 3090

3. Become a Youtube "personality" and shill your soul away.

With that calibre of mastery I ask you to advise me on my Vega56.

Yeah, I personally wouldn't go for anything below 8C/16T for gaming now since consoles have 8C/16T. I'm not saying 5600X is a bad choice or anything, it should be much, much faster than consoles as long as games aren't utilizing over 12 threads.

Yeah it finally works. It feels it's been forever but I'm just happy to be able to play pc games again.

And yeah the guy from the shop gave me the old PSU and told me to definitely try to rma. He also says I got extremely lucky as I could have fried my 3070 instead... Which would have been a real pickle

So I ran Memtest86 v8.4 from a USB for 4 passes. All tests clean except Test 7 which produced 10 errors.
Quickly searching the internet for an explanation of the results just says either bad RAM or weak memory controller.

I had my CPU (3570k) OC’d at 4.6 stable. Did Prime95 blend for an hour or more with no errors and stable temps (pushed 84C at peak). Then decided to OC my RAM (DDR3 1600 4x4GB) to 1800Mhz to try and give the rig just a little more leg while waiting for all the new tech to drop and stocking issues to subside. Again. No issues on Prime95 and gaming

Wife was researching on her Capstone for college last night and apparently had like 20 Chrome tabs open when it crashed the rig. I cleared the CMOS and it’s been stable since so she can finish her Capstone (all speeds and timings are default).

USB Memtest gave Test 7 errors with everything default. Current Techpowerup Memtest through windows is clean (running now). Am I looking at bad old RAM or a false positive?

🐐 ed thread. Waiting on a good CPU to accompany my 3080, not in a rush at all though. Will be the first PC I'll be building from scratch.

Which CPU are people going for to match with the 3000 series ATM?
I’ve got a 10700k @ 4.9ghz that I’m using with a 1080ti for now until I can get my hands on an RTX 3090

Turns out my OC wasn’t as stable as I thought. Set RAM back to 1600 and loosened the timings from 9-9-9-24 to 10-10-10-30 @1.5v. Put CPU at 4.5Ghz. Prime95 for 2hours with no errors. Max temp 80C and then a full 11 test run on Memtest (almost 4 hours). No errors.

Now I’m debating trying to tighten the timings or up the speed on the RAM and find the sweet spot .

One thing i never touch is memory timings. fuck that shit. Unstable memory is the worst
I understand your sentiment, but I won't say I'll never mess with the timings. One day, I might strike up the courage to use the Ryzen dram calculator and see what the fun is all about.

Just putting together a new PC (i9-10850k/32gb ram). The only thing I can't find is a graphics card. Shit is sold out everywhere and I am not paying scalper prices. I guess i'll stick to my 5600XT for now. I want to find a 3080 or similar.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
I'm kinda in the market for a new graphics card, my current card is an AMD RX580 (8GB) card from 2017 which was the last time I upgraded. I game on an ultrawide 1440p display and usually have pretty bad results on newer games without significantly lowering the detail or resolution.

Turns out, I'm probably better off finding an entire in-stock pre-built computer with a new graphics card and just chucking my current PC in the trash. These scalper prices don't make any sense - is anyone really spending $1,499 on an RX 6800xt? Or $1,800 on a 3080ti?

I'd wait to be honest. You wont make that much of a jump unless you overpay.

Whats your cpu?

I have a Ryzen 7 1700X, around the same vintage as the GPU.

I've seen success stories of people buying dog-shit prebuilts that include RTX cards and then parting it out on eBay to cover costs but keeping the card.

Tech is so hot on eBay right now it might actually be feasible but still a bit more expensive than MSRP.

My 2016 build cost me about $1200 then and over the last month I sold the GPU, CPU and RAM for a combined $885 making that build cost me $315 for years of gaming. I could've been more aggressive too and sold the HDD , DVD drive, PSU, case and motherboard for another $1-150 but I don't like eBaying stuff for less than $40 or so. Not worth the hassle to me.

My point is that if you can find a prebuilt with really cheap components and an RTX card those are still worth more than they should be online these days. Hell it might even make sense to just buy prebuilt and part out the whole thing for profit.

The tech market fucking sucks right now.

Stick to that 5600XT and hold it tight. These prices are fucking goofy. It's really, really sad to see.

Yeah, there was a 3080 on BB two days ago. I was refreshing the page with my saved graphics cards that I want. The 3080 popped up as an open box available for $515, in excellent condition. By the time I went through the checkout process it was already gone. These bots are ridiculous.

Well, since I still haven't been able to get my hands on an RTX 3090 since launch then I guess today I'll finally give overclocking a try on my GTX 1080 Ti and see how far I can get.

FWIW I managed to get a 3090 at MSRP and bought it purely because I couldn't find a 3080 and had all my components sitting in boxes since September. Not worth it at all for the extra money.

I'm seeing very similar performance to 3080s and the reviews are generally spot on: 10ish or so percent more performance for twice the price. I'm happy with it but I would've been just as happy with a 3080 and a spare $800.

If you're dead-set in getting one though more power to you and I wish you luck finding one.

Damn... prices keep getting jacked up, it seems. I bought this prebuilt back in December: https://www.newegg.com/abs-ali460/p/N82E16883360045?Item=N82E16883360045

Looks like I really lucked out in hindsight.

Look on the bright side. When you're ready to upgrade in 2 ~ 3 years, chances are you'll be able to get $800 ~ $1000 on the used market for it.

I just sold a Vega 64 on eBay for $550. I bought it new from Newegg in August, 2017 for $599 (and it came with two games I wanted to play). The GPU market is fucking ridiculous.

This past year I upgraded all my parts EXCEPT my gpu. Had the 3080 preordered and was going to get delivered to me last year. Cancelled last second because I needed emergency funds for something else. Thinking by January the stock issues would be addressed. Lol was I wrong.

Dude tell me about it. I just sold my 1080 Ti for $599 plus shipping. I paid $699 for it way back when. Amazing. Got $200 for an old i7 too. The market is crazy right now.

Nice thread.

Does anybody have advice for getting a micro-atx build? I need a replacement for my PC - first built in 2010! - but I don't game on it anymore so it'd be for photoshop/video production etc. $800 is my budget.

I'm happy to get a cheap GPU for indie games but it's not something I need to spend a lot of money on.

Yeah I could have gotten away with a cheaper system if my timing would have been better it just seems my luck anytime I would sit down and start looking at systems everything was out of stock.

A month or so ago my son was able to catch a 3080 prebuild at Redux for a lot cheaper then what I bought and he is thrilled with it.

One question bros, which software do you recommend for keeing track of system temperatures?

HwINFO and Afterburner are a good combo. Or just Afterburner if you only want one program. It monitors CPU temps in the newer versions now.

Oh and Rainmeter to pin stuff like temps and fan speed etc. etc. to the desktop in a sleek and sexy interface.

Edit: enjoy the new system man! Exciting!

please share your timespy scores :D both regular and extreme.

hwinfo is best to keep track at temps.

for stability run heaven on loop.

Is that a 3DMark benchmark? Would love to try it, but it isn´t free, right?

I'll try Heaven tho, will tell you later how that went.

We need to know how many FPS you get in Minecraft too, obviously.
Sorry bro, but after spending a whole night playing that game I promised myself to not touch it ever again. :')

You can download the 3dmark demo free on steam, which lets you run time spy and fire strike tests
Great! Thanks for letting me now.

I've tried closing everything, checking in task manager if anything is using processor but no, i've checked it hundreds of times over past 2 month and as soon as I activate power-saver mode, it drops to 2192MHz and stays there.
Does 5600x even go below that in idle?
