I bought them at release and got to the docks in Shenmue 1 where you meet up with Guizhang, but couldn't remember what to do next and lost interest. Never started 2.

Don't get me wrong, playing Shenmue over christmas in 2000 was one of the most memorable, immersive gaming experiences I've ever had, but I feel like it's mostly nice nostalgia than great gameplay in the here and now.

I usually look up a quick tip or something now days, I already beat it Christmas 2000 with no tips. Nothing left to prove hah. I do like the no hand holding though.

Same, like I said I had a great time back in the day and it held my attention fully until I was sailing to Hong Kong, but when playing the HD rerelease I just felt like I was going round in circles and tuned out because I had other stuff to play. I will give it another shot sometime.

Why are people acting like Shenmue isn't incredibly influential on how 3D games are structured today? It's not a list of the best games.

"Open world" (areas), time and date system, day-night cycle, NPCs with schedules and their own movements, you can talk, dialogue options, fully 3d, jobs, activities etc. It shouldn't be #1, but after SM64 and OOT, it's the most influential 3D game. Most open world games now are doing things because Shenmue did.

Ahhh, finally someone on this forum who knows their stuff MGS not in the top 3 is a crime against humanity.

Shenmue at the top is a literal joke, sorry Yu Suzuki. The rest of the top 5 is debatable, SMB definitely needs to be there, DOOM definitely, OoT I'll accept, GTA3 deserves to be there. KCD2 is a monumental release and one of the best games of this generation but it does NOT deserve to be there, at least not yet.

Edit: and Dark Souls should be higher considering it invented a whole new genre so deep into the industry's life-cycle.
