I'm considering getting a Series S as a secondary/tertiary console. Is it worth it?

If youre gonna get one just get a Series X.
This. Because it’s more powerful….. but…. yes your x360 games will all be visited even on a series S. if that’s all you need it for and some d maybe some descent and interesting indies and JRPGs on gamepass, series S is just fine.

if you already have a Gaming laptop there's no point in getting a Series S that will play worse version of same games
Also the 360 games you brought up have superior PC versions.

Personally I would fish for PC deals and build something that rivals the Pro for a similar price (700 to 1000)

Yes….. and all he has to do is buy all his backlog all over again on PC. This is bad advice.

If he didn’t already own those games I would agree with you. I have a decent amount of games on steam but none of them are games I already bought back in X360. For an xbox owner, it’s better to have a newer Xbox to play those games. Maybe when MS makes out backlogs completely playable on PC, your idea would make more sense.

How is that trolling? Or are you doing that thing where is somebody disagrees with you they must be trolling?

I genuinely don’t like the controller. Nothing I said is false. There is no gyro, the buttons are way too loud just like blue switches, batteries are annoying and require you to purchase something extra to bypass them, and the dpad is shit. Microsoft have literally never made a good dpad while every other major gaming console manufacturer have.

Series S 1TB for 350 Euro? No. Used Series S for <150 Euro? For sure. I saw it and played with it and no matter how much some people here hate it for whatever reason, it's actually impressive how much you get for so little money. Add Game Pass and VPN games and you got a steal. Price-Performance is unbeatable.

I got one at the same time I got my PS5 just so I could play all the games available

I've since cancelled gamepass and haven't switched the series S on in about 9 months, there just isn't anything I want to play on it

I mean they are deep sales for XSX, why would you want even for short gaming sessions, worse HW?

If you can score one closer to $100 and plan to do gamepass ultimate and willing to compromise on quality/performance then sure why not, go for it.

If you can find one for a steal, then go for it. Otherwise, I’d just save a bit of money and put it towards a Series X, especially during the holiday season when they’ll be marked down. You’ll have a far greater experience in terms of hardware and performance, and you’ll have a UHD disk drive.

Xbox has the only D-pad that allows smooth circular motions (without giving blisters with extensive use) in addition to precise directional presses. Having built-in batteries that require charging between uses is worse than swappable batteries that can be switched on the fly and condemn the controller to needing a replacement years down the road as aging battery fails to hold a charge and balloons out of proportion causing internal damage. Gyro is kind of useless unless it has motion controls built-in as in the case of VR and Wii controllers.

Huh? The Series controllers are some the best around and I think the d-pad noise reminds of the lovely sound when it gets with microswitches controllers
Xbox gamepads beats PS gamepads right off the bat due to better ergonomics. Almost all games use LS as default movement control (left hand) while face buttons are the main function buttons (right hand) to go along with triggers. So Xbox's gamepad leads to natural hand layouts.

Most games dont even use dpad in important ways except for secondary functions. Some games dont even use dpad at all. So to have that part as the left hand resting position makes no sense. It did make sense during the PS1 days when most games used dpad as the main controls and not everyone even had analog gamepads to begin with, since they werent standard. I had two regular PS1 gamepads.

Try to find a good deal on the Series X. Or unless you can find the XSS for like 150 or something. The problem is that the XSX does everything better than the XSS including having a disc drive. Except perhaps form factor, and ofcourse its lower price, the XSS is inferior in every way possible. Made worse by certain legacy games running off the vanilla One S profiles.

It was not a bad system per se. Compared to my PS4 Pro at the time the XSS was MUCH faster, much more silent and just more snappy overall (quick resume etc is all there). It has the same access speed and feeling as the XSX. But even I sort of felt ripped off when I unpacked my 399 PS5 DE. Because the deficit was only 100 bucks. The XSS is far less powerful and has way less storage as well. Its simply not worth more than 150-200 bucks.

If the console was what was initially promised; the only cutback being resolution, then it would be a good deal. You'd get 60fps at 1440p averages, legacy games not being gimped, it would be a good budget choice. But the cutbacks are far more severe. And actually from day one. Some games are fine, others are trash and locked at 30fps modes.

  • How is the performance on the Series S generally speaking compared to the X? Does it struggle running recent games?

  • Is it true that some or even most of the X360 generation is playable on the Series with better performance?
More specifically, would I play be able to play games that are stuck in that generation, like for example Deus Ex Human Revolution and Fallout New Vegas, but with better performance?

  • Would I be able to use the same Game Pass Ultimate subscription on my laptop?
1. yes, it struggles. Series S games have considerably lower resolution and performance in almost any demanding game. A friend of mine who's an absolut casual gamer saw a night and day difference when he played Dragon's Dogma 2 on the S and then on the X. He sold it shortly afterwards and got an X for like 350EUR.
2. yes, they often run better. Don't expect any miracles or magic, though. FPS hard caps are still there, but games struggling to hit that target run better and more consistent.
3. yes.

Overall I'd not recommend a Series S.

I've never had that issue with Nintendo and PlayStation dpads (as well as stuff like 8bitdo) but okay sure nor have I ever had a swollen battery. The only controller I've ever had battery issue with were my DualShock 3s after like 6 years in which case it was time for a new one anyways. Nor is gyro useless as it makes stuff like FPS on controller much more accurate but okay sure useless.

Agree to disagree.

Picked up the S last Christmas for my son and it NEVER gets touched my WORST electronics purchase EVER
Depending on your age, you must have been fortunate enough to experience god-tier electronics throughout your life

It sounds like you're using hyperbole here to express how disappointing the purchase of the S was for you

I got mine as a secondary console for the family and for me it has been totally worth it, mostly thanks to Game Pass' offerings.

To your question, it pairs very well with a PC, and the cloud gaming stuff is pretty good too on a netbook or a phone with a Backbone-style controller. The abllity to go back and forth from PC, to console, to cloud with cloud saves between them is one of the key benefits for me.

It's very much like a 1080p/30fps kind of console, it's better than last gen but it's not the same image quality or performance as a PS5. But you get access to current gen games and they work well enough. If image quality and 60fps are important to you, just get a Series X.

Game Pass is obviously the big selling point and it's been a game changer for my wife who really prefers being able to just try games out instead of reading reviews. So she has really staked out the Series S as her main console and loves it.

Get a firestick. Use your mobile phone. They are ALL now Xboxes so you don't need to waste money on an Xbox branded console anymore. But you said you have a PS5- that is also an Xbox so why even bother getting another Xbox when you have Xboxes everywhere!

loool no, it the most obnoxious controller ever.
its not just the horrible dpad noise either, analogs constantly hit their rims stupidly loud too.
whole thing is a clicky clacky nightmare if you are in a room with someone else.

I got a series X as a solution to my ps5 dying and needing to wait a couple of weeks for a new one….i think the last time I used it was 6 months ago. So from own experience. Nah…it’ll just gather dust, unused…whilst also possibly sucking money out of your account for an unused gamespass sub every month.

Think you're scraping the barrel there, but whatever.

I think you're trying to find the smallest issue to point score and the final part of your post just confirms it for me.

On the last point.

Nintendo and Sony both have great Dpads overall (again the Switch Pro controller is definitely an exception, personally I use a 8bitdo on Switch) and Sega Saturn has a god tier dpad. I wouldn't call Neo Geo a major console manufacturer by any means but the Neo Geo pad is also god tier (though idk if it's even a dpad).

I just simply don't care for the current Xbox controller. People like different shit, hell somebody out there considers the N64 and dreamcast controllers to be the best controllers available and that's fine.

If you can afford it without too much problem then it's your call.

I personally wouldn't go for it but I'm not into the XBox ecosystem at all so I'm biased.

I got a Series S with my MS rewards points and i dont regret it. I also use it as a backup console. If you have a PS5 then it'll make a great gamepass machine. I play my Series S in my spare room if someone is watching tv in the living room and can't play my Series X or PS5. Games run fine. There's a few games where the graphics take a hit like Sniper Elite 5 and Starfield but they are very playable and i havent had any issues. It also makes for a great streaming device too with a chromium web browser, kodi, and more streaming apps than the PS5. Xbox 360 games run fine, but the Series X plays the Xbox One X enhanced versions, the Series S plays them at native resolution but still look great on a 4k tv. Then there's also emulators up to ps2/wii and also Xbox 360 so you can play 360 games that aren't natively backwards compatible.
